THE King has been pleased to grant the Dignity of a Baron of the Kingdom of Great Britain to the Right Honourable John Griffin (age 69), Lord Howard of Walden, Knight of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, and General of His Majesty's Forces, and to the Heirs Male of his Body lawfully begotten, by the Name, Stile and Title of Lord Braybrooke, Baron of Braybrooke, in the County of Northampton; with Remainder to Richard Aldworth Neville (age 70), of Billingbear, in the County of Berks, Esq; and the Heirs Male of his Body lawfully begotten.

The King has also been pleased to grant the like Dignity of a Baron of the Kingdom of Great Britain to the Right Honourable Jeffery Lord Amherst (age 71), Knight of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, and General of His Majesty's Forces, and to the Heirs Male of His Body lawfully begotten, by the Name, Stile and Title of 1st Baron Amherst, of Montreal in the County of Kent; with Remainder to his Nephew William Pitt Amherst (age 15), Esq; and the Heirs Male of his Body lawfully begotten. [Note. This was the second time Jeffrey Amherst had been created Baron Amherst. The first creation had no special remainder and would become extinct on his death since he had no children. This second creation had a special remainder to his nephew William Pitt Amherst to ensure the Barony would continue; William Pitt Amherst would subsequently be created Earl Amherst. On 3rd August 1797 Jeffrey Amherst 1st Baron Amherst (age 80) died. Baron Amherst of Holmesdale in Kent extinct. His nephew William (age 24) succeeded 2nd Baron Amherst of Montreal in Kent.

On 13th March 1857 William Pitt Amherst 1st Earl Amherst (age 84) died at Knole House, Sevenoaks. His son William (age 51) succeeded 2nd Earl Amherst, 3rd Baron Amherst of Montreal in Kent. Gertrude Percy Countess Amherst (age 42) by marriage Countess Amherst.

On 26th March 1886 William Amherst 2nd Earl Amherst (age 80) died at Montreal Park, Sevenoaks. His son William (age 50) succeeded 3rd Earl Amherst, 4th Baron Amherst of Montreal in Kent. Julia Mann Countess Amherst by marriage Countess Amherst.

On 14th August 1910 William Archer Amherst 3rd Earl Amherst (age 74) died without issue as a result of an operation he received three months prior for a throat infection at Montreal Park, Sevenoaks. His brother Hugh (age 54) succeeded 4th Earl Amherst, 5th Baron Amherst of Montreal in Kent.

All About History Books

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 7th March 1927 Hugh Amherst 4th Earl Amherst (age 71) died. His son Jeffery (age 30) succeeded 5th Earl Amherst, 6th Baron Amherst of Montreal in Kent.

On 4th March 1993 Jeffery Amherst 5th Earl Amherst (age 96) died. Earl Amherst, Baron Amherst of Montreal in Kent extinct.

THE Queen has been pleased, by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, dated the 26th August, 1892, to grant the dignity of a Baron of the said United Kingdom unto William Amhurst Tyssen-Amherst (age 57), of Amherst, in the county of Kent, Didlington Hall, in the county of Norfolk, and of Hackney, in the county of London, Esq, and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the name, style, and title of Baron Amherst of Hackney, in the county of London, and, in default of such issue male, to hold the name, style, and title of Baroness Amherst of Hackney, to Mary Rothes Margaret Cecil (age 35), wife of William Cecil (age 37) (commonly called Lord William Cecil), Lieutenant-Colonel of the 4th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment, eldest daughter of the said William Amhurst Tyssen Amherst; and, after her decease, and in default of such issue of the said William Amhurst Tyssen-Amherst, to hold the name, style, and title of Baron Amherst of Hackney, to the heirs male lawfully begotten of the body of the said Mary Rothes Margaret Cecil.

On 16th January 1909 William Tyssen-Amherst 1st Baron Amherst (age 73) died. His daughter Mary (age 51) succeeded 2nd Baroness Amherst of Hackney in London.

On 21st December 1919 Mary Rothes Tyssen-Amherst 2nd Baroness Amherst (age 62) died. Her grandson William (age 7) succeeded 3rd Baron Amherst of Hackney in London.

On 22nd July 1980 William Amherst Cecil 3rd Baron Amherst (age 68) died. His son Hugh (age 39) succeeded 4th Baron Amherst of Hackney in London.

On 2nd April 2009 Hugh Amherst Cecil 4th Baron Amherst (age 68) died. His son Hugh (age 40) succeeded 5th Baron Amherst of Hackney in London.
