The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." On 13th March 1712 John Leveson-Gower 1st Earl Gower (age 17) and Evelyn Pierrepont Baroness Gower (age 21) were married. She by marriage Baroness Gower. She the daughter of Evelyn Pierrepont 1st Duke Kingston upon Hull (age 57) and Mary Fielding Countess Kingston upon Hull. They were fourth cousins.

On 31st October 1733 John Leveson-Gower 1st Earl Gower (age 39) and Penelope Stonhouse Baroness Gower (age 28) were married. She by marriage Baroness Gower.

On 16th May 1736 John Leveson-Gower 1st Earl Gower (age 41) and Mary Tufton Countess Gower were married. She by marriage Baroness Gower. She the daughter of Thomas Tufton 6th Earl of Thanet and Catherine Cavendish Countess Isle Thanet. They were fourth cousins.

On 25th December 1754 John Leveson-Gower 1st Earl Gower (age 60) died. His son Granville (age 33) succeeded 2nd Earl Gower, 3rd Baron Gower, 7th Baronet Gower of Stittenham in Yorkshire. Louisa Egerton Countess Gower (age 31) by marriage Countess Gower.

On 27th February 1861 George Sutherland Leveson-Gower 2nd Duke Sutherland (age 74) died at Trentham Hall, Staffordshire. His son George (age 32) succeeded 3rd Duke Sutherland, 4th Marquess Stafford, 21st Earl Sutherland, 5th Earl Gower, 6th Baron Gower, 10th Baronet Gower of Stittenham in Yorkshire.

On 27th June 1913 Cromartie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower 4th Duke of Sutherland (age 61) died. His son George (age 24) succeeded 5th Duke Sutherland, 23rd Earl Sutherland, 7th Earl Gower, 8th Baron Gower, 12th Baronet Gower of Stittenham in Yorkshire.

On 1st February 1963 George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower 5th Duke of Sutherland (age 74) died. His third cousin once removed John (age 47) succeeded 6th Duke Sutherland, 6th Marquess Stafford, 8th Earl Gower, 9th Baron Gower, 13th Baronet Gower of Stittenham in Yorkshire. Diana Evelyn Percy (age 45) by marriage Duchess Sutherland.His niece Elizabeth (age 41) succeeded 24th Countess Sutherland.

On 21st September 2000 John Sutherland Egerton 6th Duke Sutherland (age 85) died. His first cousin once removed Francis (age 60) succeeded 7th Duke Sutherland, 7th Marquess Stafford, 6th Earl Ellesmere, 9th Earl Gower, 10th Baron Gower, 14th Baronet Gower of Stittenham in Yorkshire.
