The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

THE Queen has been pleased, by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, dated the 27th August, 1892, to grant the dignity of a Baron of the said United Kingdom unto William John Legh (age 63), of Lyme Park, in the County Palatine of Chester, Esq., and the heirs malo cf his body lawfully begotten, by the name, style, and title of Baron Newton, of Newton-in-Makerfield, in the County Palatine of Lancaster.

On 15th December 1898 William John Legh 1st Baron Newton (age 69) died. His son Thomas (age 41) succeeded 2nd Baron Newton of Newton-in-Makerfield in Lancashire. Evelyn Caroline Davenport Baroness Newton by marriage Baroness Newton of Newton-in-Makerfield in Lancashire.

On 21st March 1942 Thomas Wodehouse Leigh 2nd Baron Newton (age 85) died. His son Richard (age 53) succeeded 3rd Baron Newton of Newton-in-Makerfield in Lancashire. Helen Meysey-Thompson Baroness Newton by marriage Baroness Newton of Newton-in-Makerfield in Lancashire.

On 11th June 1960 Richard Legh 3rd Baron Newton (age 71) died. His son Peter (age 45) succeeded 4th Baron Newton of Newton-in-Makerfield in Lancashire.

On 16th June 1992 Peter Legh 4th Baron Newton (age 77) died. His son Richard (age 42) succeeded 5th Baron Newton of Newton-in-Makerfield in Lancashire.
