Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans

Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

20th August 1528. Son Thomas Burgh 7th Baron Cobham 5th Baron Strabolgi 1st Baron Burgh (age 40) succeeded.

28th February 1550. Son William Burgh 8th Baron Cobham 6th Baron Strabolgi 2nd Baron Burgh (age 17) succeeded.

10th September 1584. Son Thomas Burgh 9th Baron Cobham 7th Baron Strabolgi 3rd Baron Burgh (age 26) succeeded.

14th October 1597. Son Robert Burgh 10th Baron Cobham 8th Baron Strabolgi 4th Baron Burgh (age 3) succeeded.

26th February 1602. Robert Burgh 10th Baron Cobham 8th Baron Strabolgi 4th Baron Burgh abeyant.

In 1318 David Strathbogie 10th Earl Atholl was created 1st Baron Strabolgi.

On 28th December 1326 David Strathbogie 10th Earl Atholl died. His son David (age 17) succeeded 11th Earl Atholl, 2nd Baron Strabolgi.

Battle of Culblean

On 30th November 1335 David III Strathbogie 11th Earl Atholl (age 26) was killed during the Battle of Culblean. His son David (age 8) succeeded 12th Earl Atholl, 3rd Baron Strabolgi.

Whilst small the battle had a significant impact insofar as it brought an end to the campaign of King Edward III of England (age 23) also ending the aspirations to the Scottish throne of King Edward I of Scotland (age 52).

On 10th October 1369 David IV Strathbogie 12th Earl Atholl (age 42) died at Strathbogie. His 3 x great grandson Edward succeeded 4th Baron Strabolgi

On 20th August 1528 Edward Burgh (age 65) died. His son Thomas (age 40) succeeded 5th Baron Strabolgi. Agnes Tyrwhitt Baroness Cobham, Strabolgi and Burgh (age 47) by marriage Baroness Strabolgi.

On 28th February 1550 Thomas Burgh 7th Baron Cobham 5th Baron Strabolgi 1st Baron Burgh (age 62) died. His son William (age 17) succeeded 8th Baron Cobham, 6th Baron Strabolgi, 2nd Baron Burgh.

Before 10th September 1584 William Burgh 8th Baron Cobham 6th Baron Strabolgi 2nd Baron Burgh (age 51) and Katherine Clinton Baroness Cobham, Strabolgi and Burgh (age 46) were married. She by marriage Baroness Cobham, Baroness Strabolgi, Baroness Burgh. She the daughter of Edward Clinton 1st Earl Lincoln (age 72) and Elizabeth "Bessie" Blount Baroness Clinton and Tailboys. They were fifth cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England.

On 10th September 1584 William Burgh 8th Baron Cobham 6th Baron Strabolgi 2nd Baron Burgh (age 51) died. His son Thomas (age 26) succeeded 9th Baron Cobham, 7th Baron Strabolgi, 3rd Baron Burgh.

On 14th October 1597 Thomas Burgh 9th Baron Cobham 7th Baron Strabolgi 3rd Baron Burgh (age 39) died at Newry, County Down. His son Robert (age 3) succeeded 10th Baron Cobham, 8th Baron Strabolgi, 4th Baron Burgh.

On 26th February 1602 Robert Burgh 10th Baron Cobham 8th Baron Strabolgi 4th Baron Burgh (age 8) died. Baron Cobham, Baron Strabolgi and Baron Burgh abeyant between his four sisters Elizabeth Burgh, Frances Burgh, Anne Burgh and Katherine Burgh.
