1st. 17th February 1633. Richard Weston 1st Earl of Portland 1577-1635. Extinct. May 1688.

2nd. 9th April 1689. William Bentinck 1st Earl of Portland 1649-1709. Extant.

13th March 1635. Son Jerome Weston 2nd Earl of Portland (age 29) succeeded.

17th March 1663. Son Charles Weston 3rd Earl of Portland (age 23) succeeded.

13th June 1665. Uncle Thomas Weston 4th Earl of Portland (age 55) succeeded. See Battle of Lowestoft.

May 1688. Thomas Weston 4th Earl of Portland extinct.

On 17th February 1633 Richard Weston Baron Weston (age 55) was created 1st Earl of Portland. Frances Waldegrave (age 55) by marriage Countess of Portland.

On 13th March 1635 Richard Weston 1st Earl of Portland (age 58) died. He was buried at Winchester Cathedral [Map] where he has a monument. The marble elments sculpted by Isaac Besnier, Sculptor in Ordinary and Keeper of the Statues to Charles I until 1643, when he was superseded by his son Peter; the bronze elements perhaps cast by Hubert le Sueur. His son Jerome (age 29) succeeded 2nd Earl of Portland, 2nd Baron Weston of Nayland in Suffolk. Frances Stewart Countess Portland (age 18) by marriage Countess of Portland.

Jerome Weston 2nd Earl of Portland: On 16th December 1605 he was born to Richard Weston 1st Earl of Portland and Frances Waldegrave Countess Portland. On 10th June 1632 he and Frances Stewart Countess Portland were married. She the daughter of Esmé Stewart 3rd Duke Lennox and Katherine Clifton Duchess Lennox. He the son of Richard Weston 1st Earl of Portland and Frances Waldegrave Countess Portland. On 17th March 1663 he died. His son Charles succeeded 3rd Earl of Portland, 3rd Baron Weston of Nayland in Suffolk.

Frances Stewart Countess Portland: In 1617 she was born to Esmé Stewart 3rd Duke Lennox and Katherine Clifton Duchess Lennox. In 1694 Frances Stewart Countess Portland died.

On 17th March 1663 Jerome Weston 2nd Earl of Portland (age 57) died. His son Charles (age 23) succeeded 3rd Earl of Portland, 3rd Baron Weston of Nayland in Suffolk.

On 3rd June 1665 at the Battle of Lowestoft an English fleet commanded by King James II of England Scotland and Ireland (age 31), Prince Rupert Palatinate Simmern 1st Duke Cumberland (age 45) and Edward Montagu 1st Earl Sandwich (age 39) defeated a Dutch Fleet.

Richard Boyle was killed.

Charles Maccarthy Viscount Muskerry was killed.

Charles Berkeley 1st Earl Falmouth (age 35) was killed by a cannonball aboard the Royal Charles. Earl Falmouth extinct, Baron Botetourt Langport in Somerset extinct. His father Charles (age 65) succeeded 2nd Viscount Fitzhardinge of Berehaven in Kerry. Penelope Godolphin Viscountess Fitzhardinge by marriage Viscountess Fitzhardinge of Berehaven in Kerry. Possibly the only occasion when a father has succeeded his son.

Charles Weston 3rd Earl of Portland (deceased) was killed by a cannon shot. On 13th June 1665 His uncle Thomas (age 55) succeeded 4th Earl of Portland, 4th Baron Weston of Nayland in Suffolk.

Thomas Allin 1st Baronet (age 53) was present.

Admiral Jeremy Smith commanded the Mary.

Captain George Batts fought. He was assigned to Sir George Ayscue's (age 49) division in the Blue Squadron.

James Ley 3rd Earl Marlborough (age 47) was killed at the Battle of Lowestoft commanding Old James attempting to recover a captured ship. His half brother William (age 53) succeeded 4th Earl Marlborough.

After 1666 Thomas Weston 4th Earl of Portland (age 56) and Anne Boteler Countess Newport and Portland (age 66) were married. She by marriage Countess of Portland. He the son of Richard Weston 1st Earl of Portland and Frances Waldegrave Countess Portland. They were half fifth cousins.

In May 1688 Thomas Weston 4th Earl of Portland (age 78) died. Earl of Portland, Baron Weston of Nayland in Suffolk extinct.

On 1st February 1678 William Bentinck 1st Earl of Portland (age 28) and Anne Villiers Countess Portland (age 27) were married. She by marriage Countess of Portland.

Charles Mordaunt 3rd Earl Peterborough 1st Earl Monmouth (age 31) was created 1st Earl Monmouth. Carey Fraser Countess Peterborough and Monmouth (age 29) by marriage Countess Monmouth.

Thomas Belasyse 1st Earl Fauconberg (age 62) was created 1st Earl Fauconberg. Mary Cromwell Countess Fauconberg (age 52) by marriage Countess Fauconberg.

William Bentinck 1st Earl of Portland (age 39) was created 1st Earl of Portland.

The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." On 12th May 1700 William Bentinck 1st Earl of Portland (age 50) and Jane Martha Temple Countess Portland (age 28) were married. She by marriage Countess of Portland. The difference in their ages was 22 years.

On 23rd November 1709 William Bentinck 1st Earl of Portland (age 60) died. His son Henry (age 27) succeeded 2nd Earl of Portland.

On 4th July 1726 Henry Bentinck 1st Duke Portland (age 44) died in Spanish Town Jamaica. His body was returned to England. On 03 Nov 1726 he was buried in the Duke of Ormonde Vault, King Henry VII Chapel, Westminster Abbey. His son William (age 17) succeeded 2nd Duke Portland, 3rd Earl of Portland.

On 1st May 1762 William Bentinck 2nd Duke Portland (age 53) died. His son William (age 24) succeeded 3rd Duke Portland, 4th Earl of Portland.

On 30th October 1809 William Cavendish-Bentinck 3rd Duke Portland (age 71) died. His son William (age 41) succeeded 4th Duke Portland, 5th Earl of Portland.

On 27th March 1854 William Henry Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck 4th Duke Portland (age 85) died. His son William (age 53) succeeded 5th Duke Portland, 6th Earl of Portland although it took him three years before he took his seat in the House of Lords.

On 6th December 1879 William John Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck 5th Duke Portland (age 79) died unmarried at his London residence Harcourt House Cavendish Square Marylebone. He was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery [Map]. His first cousin once removed William (age 21) succeeded 6th Duke Portland, 7th Earl of Portland.

On 26th April 1943 William Cavendish-Bentinck 6th Duke Portland (age 85) died. He was buried at St Winifred's Church, Holbeck. His son William (age 50) succeeded 7th Duke Portland, 8th Earl of Portland, 3rd Baron Bolsover of Bolsover in Derbyshire. Ivy Gordon-Lennox Duchess Portland (age 55) by marriage Duchess Portland.

The Deeds of King Henry V, or in Latin Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

On 21st March 1977 William Arthur Henry Cavendish-Bentinck 7th Duke Portland (age 84) died. He was buried at St Winifred's Church, Holbeck. His third cousin Ferdinand (age 87) succeeded 8th Duke Portland, 9th Earl of Portland. Baron Bolsover of Bolsover in Derbyshire extinct.

The heir to the Duke's titles was a distant cousin. Rather than allow the entailed estates to pass with the titles, the Duke arranged to break the entails and thus enrich his own daughters. The family seat of Welbeck Abbey [Map] passed to his elder daughter, Lady Anne (age 60), who never married; upon her death, it passed to the son of her deceased younger sister, Lady Margaret, who had died in 1955

On 13th December 1980 Ferdinand Cavendish-Bentinck 8th Duke of Portland (age 91) died. His brother Victor (age 83) succeeded 9th Duke Portland, 10th Earl of Portland.

On 30th July 1990 Victor Cavendish-Bentinck 9th Duke of Portland (age 93) died without surviving male issue. He was buried at St Winifred's Church, Holbeck. Duke Portland extinct. His half sixth cousin Henry (age 70) succeeded 11th Earl of Portland.

On 30th January 1997 Henry Charles Bentinck 11th Earl of Portland (age 77) died. His son Timothy (age 43) succeeded 12th Earl of Portland.
