The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." The Queen has also been pleased to direct letters patent to be passed under the Great Seal, granting the dignities of Viscount and Earl of the said United Kingdom, unto William Baron King (age 33), and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the names, stiles, and titles of Viscount Ockham, of Ockham, in the county of Surrey, and Earl of Lovelace. [Augusta Ada Byron Countess Lovelace (age 22) by marriage Countess Lovelace. She was a descendant of the previous Baron Lovelace of Hurley in Berkshire.]
The Queen has also been pleased to direct letters patent to be passed under the Great Seal, granting the dignity of an Earl of the said United Kingdom, unto Laurence Baron Dundas (age 72), and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the name, stile, and title of Earl of Zetland.
On 29th December 1893 William King Noel 1st Earl Lovelace (age 88) died. His son Ralph (age 54) succeeded 2nd Earl Lovelace, 2nd Viscount Ockham of Ockham in Surrey, 9th Baron King of Ockham in Surrey.
On 28th August 1906 Ralph King-Milbanke 2nd Earl of Lovelace (age 67) died. His brother Lionel (age 41) succeeded 3rd Earl Lovelace, 3rd Viscount Ockham of Ockham in Surrey, 10th Baron King of Ockham in Surrey. His son Ada (age 35) succeeded 14th Baron Wentworth, 18th Baron Despencer.
In 1929 Lionel King 3rd Earl of Lovelace (age 64) died. His son Peter (age 24) succeeded 4th Earl Lovelace, 4th Viscount Ockham of Ockham in Surrey, 11th Baron King of Ockham in Surrey.
In 1964 Peter King 4th Earl of Lovelace (age 59) died. His son Peter (age 12) succeeded 5th Earl Lovelace, 5th Viscount Ockham of Ockham in Surrey, 12th Baron King of Ockham in Surrey.
On 31st January 2018 Peter King 5th Earl of Lovelace (age 66) died. Earl Lovelace, Viscount Ockham of Ockham in Surrey, Baron King of Ockham in Surrey extinct.
