Battle of Talavera

Between 27th July 1809 and 28th July 1809 the Battle of Talavera, part of the Peninsular War, was fought between an Anglo Spanish army commanded by Arthur Wellesley 1st Duke Wellington (age 40) against the French. The French army withdrew at night after several of its attacks had been repulsed. Following the battle Arthur Wellesley 1st Duke Wellington was created 1st Viscount Wellington of Talavera.

Hugh Gough 1st Viscount Gough (age 29) commanded the 2nd Battalion of the 87th (Royal Irish Fusiliers) Regiment of Foot.

General Henry Fane (age 30) commanded the 3rd Prince of Wales Dragoon Guards, 4th Queen's Own Dragoons.

Charles Henry Farrington 2nd Baronet (age 14) fought.

On 14th September 1852 Arthur Wellesley 1st Duke Wellington (age 83) died at Deal Castle [Map]. His son Arthur (age 45) succeeded 2nd Duke Wellington, 2nd Viscount Wellington of Talavera. Elizabeth Hay Duchess Wellington (age 31) by marriage Duchess Wellington.

George Gammon Adams (age 31) took the death mask of the Duke of Wellington, the marble bust he executed from it being highly regarded by the Duke's heirs.

On 13th August 1884 Arthur Wellesley 2nd Duke Wellington (age 77) died. His nephew Henry (age 38) succeeded 3rd Duke Wellington, 7th Earl Mornington, 7th Viscount Wellesley of Dangan Castle, 3rd Viscount Wellington of Talavera. On 8th June 1900 Henry Wellesley 3rd Duke Wellington (age 54) died at Stratfield Saye House [Map] without issue. His brother Arthur (age 51) succeeded 4th Duke Wellington, 8th Earl Mornington, 8th Viscount Wellesley of Dangan Castle, 4th Viscount Wellington of Talavera. Kathleen Emily Bulkeley Williams Duchess Wellington (age 51) by marriage Duchess Wellington.

On 18th June 1934 Arthur Charles Wellesley 4th Duke Wellington (age 85) died. His son Arthur (age 58) succeeded 5th Duke Wellington, 9th Earl Mornington, 9th Viscount Wellesley of Dangan Castle, 5th Viscount Wellington of Talavera. On 11th December 1941 Arthur Charles Wellesley 5th Duke Wellington (age 65) died. His son Henry (age 29) succeeded 6th Duke Wellington, 10th Earl Mornington, 10th Viscount Wellesley of Dangan Castle, 6th Viscount Wellington of Talavera.

On 16th September 1943 Henry Wellesley 6th Duke Wellington (age 31) was killed during an attempt to take Pimple Hill. He was buried where he lay. He was unmarried and without issue. His uncle Gerald (age 58) succeeded 7th Duke Wellington, 11th Earl Mornington, 11th Viscount Wellesley of Dangan Castle, 7th Viscount Wellington of Talavera. On 4th January 1972 Gerald Wellesley 7th Duke Wellington (age 86) died. The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.
