The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." In February 875 [his father] Louis "Stammerer" II King Aquitaine III King West Francia (age 28) and [his step-mother] Adelaide Paris Queen Consort Aquitaine and West Francia (age 25) were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Aquitaine, Queen Consort West Francia. He the son of [his grandfather] Charles "Bald" I King West Francia (age 51) and [his grandmother] Ermentrude Orléans Queen Consort West Francia.

On 10th April 879 [his father] Louis "Stammerer" II King Aquitaine III King West Francia (age 32) died. His son [his brother] Louis (age 16) succeeded III King West Francia. His son Carloman (age 13) succeeded King West Francia. Engelberge Bivinids Queen Consort West Francia by marriage Queen Consort West Francia.

Assers Life of Alfred 884. 884. 68. Death of Carloman, of Louis II, and of Louis III.147 In that same year also, Carloman (age 18), King of the West Franks, while engaged in a boar-hunt, was miserably slain by a boar, which inflicted a dreadful wound on him with its tusk. His brother [his brother] Louis, who had also been King of the Franks, had died the year before. Both these were sons of Louis148, King of the Franks, who also had died in the year above mentioned, in which the eclipse of the sun took place.149 This Louis was the son of [his grandfather] Charles150, King of the Franks, whose daughter [his aunt] Judith151 Æthelwulf, King of the West Saxons, took to queen with her father's consent.

On 12th December 884 Carloman II King West Francia (age 18) died. His half first cousin once removed Charles (age 45) succeeded III King West Francia, King Aquitaine.
