The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." On 19th January 1464 [his brother] John IV Marquis of Montferrat (age 50) died without legitimate issue. His brother William (age 43) succeeded VIII Marquis Montferrat.

On 19th July 1420 William VIII Marquis of Montferrat was born to John Jacob Marquis of Montferrat (age 25) and Joan of Savoy.

On 19th January 1465 William VIII Marquis of Montferrat (age 44) and Marie Foix Marquis Montferrat (age 13) were married. She by marriage Marchioness Montferrat. The difference in their ages was 31 years. She the daughter of Gaston IV Count Foix (age 42) and Eleanor Trastámara Queen Consort Navarre (age 38). They were third cousin once removed.

In 18th July 1469 William VIII Marquis of Montferrat (age 48) and Elizabetta Sforza Marquis Montferrat (age 13) were married. Elizabetta Sforza Marquis Montferrat by marriage Marchioness Montferrat.

On 6th January 1474 William VIII Marquis of Montferrat (age 53) and Bernarde de Brosse Marquis Monferrat were married. She by marriage Marchioness Montferrat. They were fifth cousins.

On 27th February 1483 William VIII Marquis of Montferrat (age 62) died. His brother [his brother] Boniface (age 56) succeeded Marquis Montferrat.

On 12th March 1445 [his father] John Jacob Marquis of Montferrat (age 49) died. His son [his brother] John (age 31) succeeded IV Marquis Montferrat.

On 26th April 1411 [his father] John Jacob Marquis of Montferrat (age 16) and [his mother] Joan of Savoy were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Amadeus "Red Count" Savoy VII Count Savoy and [his grandmother] Bonne Valois Countess Armagnac and Savoy (age 46).

In 1460 [his mother] Joan of Savoy died.

In 1467 [his wife] Marie Foix Marquis Montferrat (age 15) died.

On 17th February 1485 [his former wife] Bernarde de Brosse Marquis Monferrat died.
