The History of William Marshal, Earl of Chepstow and Pembroke, Regent of England. Book 1 of 2, Lines 1-10152.

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

On 22nd November 1614 [his uncle] Thomas "Black Tom" Butler 10th Earl Ormonde 3rd Earl Ossory (age 82) died. His nephew Walter (age 55) succeeded 11th Earl Ormonde, 4th Earl Ossory. [his wife] Helen Butler Countess Ormonde and Ossory by marriage Countess Ormonde, Countess Ossory.

In 1619 Walter Butler 11th Earl Ormonde 4th Earl Ossory (age 60) was imprisoned at Fleet Prison [Map] for opposing the King's scheme to bring an end to the feuding between the Fitzgerald and Butler families.39136:39136 Walter Butler 11th Earl Ormonde 4th Earl Ossory was in prison for eight years.

On 15th December 1619 [his son] Thomas Butler Viscount Thurles (age 38) drowned accidentally at Skerries, Anglesey having been sent to England to answer charges of having garissoned Kilkenny Castle, Kilkenny, County Kilkenny.

On 19th February 1625 [his daughter] Ellis Butler died.

In 1631 [his daughter] Elizabeth Butler was born to Walter Butler 11th Earl Ormonde 4th Earl Ossory (age 72) and [his wife] Helen Butler Countess Ormonde and Ossory. Coefficient of inbreeding 1.96%.

On 24th February 1633 Walter Butler 11th Earl Ormonde 4th Earl Ossory (age 74) died. His grandson [his grandson] James (age 22) succeeded 12th Earl Ormonde, 5th Earl Ossory. [his granddaughter-in-law] Elizabeth Preston Duchess Ormonde (age 17) by marriage Countess Ormonde.

On 18th June 1633 Walter Butler 11th Earl Ormonde 4th Earl Ossory was buried at St Canice's Cathedral, Kilkenny, County Kilkenny.
