Biography of Frederick VIII King Denmark 1843-1912

On 26th May 1842 [his father] King Christian IX of Denmark (age 24) and [his mother] Queen Louise Hesse-Kassel of Denmark (age 24) were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Denmark. He the son of [his grandfather] Friedrich Wilhelm Glücksburg Duke Schleswig Holstein Sonderburg Glücksburg and [his grandmother] Louise Caroline Hesse-Kassel Duchess Schleswig Holstein Sonderburg Glücksburg (age 52). They were second cousins. He a great x 2 grandson of King George II of Great Britain and Ireland. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King George II of Great Britain and Ireland.

On 3rd June 1843 Frederick VIII King Denmark was born to [his father] King Christian IX of Denmark (age 25) and [his mother] Queen Louise Hesse-Kassel of Denmark (age 25). He a great x 3 grandson of King George II of Great Britain and Ireland. Coefficient of inbreeding 2.84%.

On 15th October 1867 [his brother] George I King Greece (age 21) and [his sister-in-law] Olga Constantinovna Holstein Gottorp Romanov Queen Consort Greece (age 16) were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Greece. He the son of [his father] King Christian IX of Denmark (age 49) and [his mother] Queen Louise Hesse-Kassel of Denmark (age 50). On 3rd August 1872 [his son] Haakon VII King Norway was born to Frederick VIII King Denmark (age 29) and [his wife] Louise of Sweden Queen Consort Denmark (age 20). He married his first cousin 1896 Maud Windsor Queen Consort Norway, daughter of King Edward VII of the United Kingdom and Alexandra of Denmark Queen Consort England, and had issue.

On 17th February 1875 [his daughter] Louise Glücksburg was born to Frederick VIII King Denmark (age 31) and [his wife] Louise of Sweden Queen Consort Denmark (age 23).

In 1876 [his brother] George I King Greece (age 30) was appointed 766th Knight of the Garter by Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom (age 56).

On 8th October 1876 [his son] Harald Glücksburg was born to Frederick VIII King Denmark (age 33) and [his wife] Louise of Sweden Queen Consort Denmark (age 24). He married his second cousin Helene Adelheid Viktoria Marie Glücksburg, daughter of Friedrich Ferdinand Glücksburg Duke Schleswig Holstein Sonderburg Glücksburg and Victoria Friederike Oldenburg Duchess Schleswig Holstein Sonderburg Glücksburg, and had issue.

On 2nd August 1878 [his daughter] Princess Ingeborg Glücksburg was born to Frederick VIII King Denmark (age 35) and [his wife] Louise of Sweden Queen Consort Denmark (age 26). She married her first cousin 22nd May 1919 Prince Axel of Denmark and had issue.

On 22nd December 1878 [his brother-in-law] Ernest Augustus Hanover 3rd Duke Cumberland and Teviotdale (age 33) and [his sister] Thyra Glücksburg Duchess Cumberland and Teviotdale (age 25) were married. She by marriage Duchess Cumberland and Teviotdale. She the daughter of [his father] King Christian IX of Denmark (age 60) and [his mother] Queen Louise Hesse-Kassel of Denmark (age 61). He the son of George V King Hanover and Marie Saxe Altenburg Queen Consort Hanover. They were fourth cousins. He a great grandson of King George III of Great Britain and Ireland. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King George II of Great Britain and Ireland.

On 4th March 1880 [his daughter] Thyra Glücksburg was born to Frederick VIII King Denmark (age 36) and [his wife] Louise of Sweden Queen Consort Denmark (age 28).

On 4th March 1887 [his son] Gustav Glücksburg was born to Frederick VIII King Denmark (age 43) and [his wife] Louise of Sweden Queen Consort Denmark (age 35).

On 23rd May 1890 [his daughter] Dagmar Glücksburg was born to Frederick VIII King Denmark (age 46) and [his wife] Louise of Sweden Queen Consort Denmark (age 38).

On 29th September 1898 [his mother] Queen Louise Hesse-Kassel of Denmark (age 81) died.

In 1901 Alice Maude Olivia Montagu Countess Derby (age 38) was appointed Lady of the Bedchamber to [his sister] Alexandra of Denmark Queen Consort England (age 56).

On 4th April 1906 [his daughter] Louise Glücksburg (age 31) died.

In 1912 George Holford (age 51) and Susannah West Wilson (age 47) were married at the Chapel Royal, St James's Palace. King George VI of the United Kingdom (age 16), Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon Queen Consort England (age 11), [his sister] Alexandra of Denmark Queen Consort England (age 67) and [his niece] Princess Victoria Windsor (age 43) were present. The Times reported ... "The aisle was lined by non-commissioned officers of the bridegroom's old regiment the 1st Life Guards. The bride who was given away by her two sons, wore a gown of old Point d'Alençon lace with a train of gold brocade veiled in chiffon. Instead of a hat she wore a headdress of gold lace and pink roses and she carried a bouquet of orchids ... The King and Queen gave Sir George Holford a pair of sleeve links bearing the Royal monogram in diamonds and rubies."

On 14th May 1912 Frederick VIII King Denmark (age 68) died. His son Christian (age 41) succeeded X King Denmark.

On 20th May 1912 [his nephew] George William Hanover (age 31) died in a car accident. Somewhat ironically he was driving to the funeral of his maternal uncle Frederick VIII King Denmark (deceased) when he skidded on a newly laid road surface. He and his valet Karl Grebe were killed in the accident. There is a monument at the site.

Probably overtired, the car raced into loose gravel rock at 90 kilometers per hour, came off the road to the right, knocked down three trees and drilled into the earth with a destroyed front axle. Prince Georg Wilhelm and his valet Grebe – Karl Grebe – died instantly. The chauffeur sitting in the back survived slightly injured. The dead were laid out in the church of Nackel and brought a little later with military honors to Friesack station.

At the station, the coffins were loaded into the carriage to the songs of the Friesacker men's choir, which brought the crown prince to the funeral in Gmunden, Austria. The Friesacker stationmaster, Joachim Gahl, it is said, received a letter from Austria including two cufflinks decorated with diamonds and the initials "GW" thanks to his duty. Hanover's royal family thanked the villagers because they had shown themselves so compassionate. Monetary donations were made to the church, the warrior federation and the virgin association. In the church, a plaque commemorates the laying out and that the congregation sang before the transfer of the dead.

On 18th March 1913 [his brother] George I King Greece (age 67) died. His son [his nephew] Constantine (age 44) succeeded I King Greece. Sophia Hohenzollern Queen Consort Greece (age 42) by marriage Queen Consort Greece.

On 20th November 1925 [his sister] Alexandra of Denmark Queen Consort England (age 80) died at Sandringham House, Norfolk at 5.25pm following a heart attack.

On 20th March 1926 [his former wife] Louise of Sweden Queen Consort Denmark (age 74) died.

On 26th February 1933 [his sister] Thyra Glücksburg Duchess Cumberland and Teviotdale (age 79) died.
