Marriage of James Duke Hamilton and Elizabeth Gunning

On 14th February 1752 James Hamilton 6th Duke Hamilton 3rd Duke Brandon (age 27) and [his mother] Elizabeth Gunning (age 18) met at a Valentine's Ball at Bedford House Covent Garden. They were married that night at Keith's Chapel, Mayfair; the location being one where he didn't require a license. This before the Marriage Act of 1753. Elizabeth Gunning Duchess Hamilton and Argyll by marriage Duchess Hamilton, Duchess Brandon of Suffolk.

On 3rd January 1759 [his father] John Campbell 5th Duke Argyll (age 35) and [his mother] Elizabeth Gunning Duchess Hamilton and Argyll (age 25) were married. He the son of [his grandfather] John Campbell 4th Duke Argyll (age 66) and [his grandmother] Mary Drummond Bellenden.

On 22nd September 1768 George William Campbell 6th Duke Argyll was born to [his father] John Campbell 5th Duke Argyll (age 45) and [his mother] Elizabeth Gunning Duchess Hamilton and Argyll (age 34).

On 7th July 1769 [his half-brother] James Hamilton 7th Duke Hamilton 4th Duke Brandon (age 14) died at Hamilton Palace, Hamilton. His brother [his half-brother] Douglas (age 12) succeeded 8th Duke Hamilton, 5th Duke Brandon of Suffolk, 4th Marquess Douglas, 5th Baron Dutton of Cheshire.

On 9th November 1770 [his grandfather] John Campbell 4th Duke Argyll (age 77) died. His son [his father] John (age 47) succeeded 5th Duke Argyll. [his mother] Elizabeth Gunning Duchess Hamilton and Argyll (age 36) by marriage Countess Argyll.

On 23rd June 1774 [his brother-in-law] Edward Smith-Stanley 12th Earl of Derby (age 21) and [his half-sister] Elizabeth Hamilton Countess Derby (age 21) were married. She the daughter of James Hamilton 6th Duke Hamilton 3rd Duke Brandon and [his mother] Elizabeth Gunning Duchess Hamilton and Argyll (age 40).

On 22nd February 1776 Edward Stanley 11th Earl of Derby (age 86) died. His grandson [his brother-in-law] Edward (age 23) succeeded 12th Earl Derby, 6th Baronet Stanley of Bickerstaffe. [his half-sister] Elizabeth Hamilton Countess Derby (age 23) by marriage Countess Derby.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

Her son [his half-brother] Douglas (age 34) succeeded 2nd Baron Hamilton of Hameldon in Leicestershire. [his sister-in-law] Elizabeth Anne Burrell Duchess Hamilton Duchess Brandon (age 33) by marriage Baroness Hamilton of Hameldon in Leicestershire.

On 5th July 1795 Henry William Paget 1st Marquess Anglesey (age 27) and [his future wife] Caroline Elizabeth Villiers Duchess Argyll (age 20) were married. She the daughter of George Bussy Villiers 4th Earl Jersey (age 60) and [his future mother-in-law] Frances Twysden (age 42). He the son of Henry Bayly-Paget 1st Earl Uxbridge (age 51) and Jane Champagné Countess Uxbridge (age 53).

On 14th March 1797 [his half-sister] Elizabeth Hamilton Countess Derby (age 44) died of tuberculosis.

On 1st May 1797 [his former brother-in-law] Edward Smith-Stanley 12th Earl of Derby (age 44) and Elizabeth Farren Countess Derby (age 38) were married. She by marriage Countess Derby. The marriage taking place six weeks after the death of his estranged wife [his half-sister] Elizabeth Hamilton Countess Derby.

On 2nd August 1799 [his half-brother] Douglas Hamilton 8th Duke Hamilton 5th Duke Brandon (age 43) died at Hamilton Palace, Hamilton. His uncle Archibald (age 59) succeeded 9th Duke Hamilton, 6th Duke Brandon of Suffolk, 5th Marquess Douglas, 6th Baron Dutton of Cheshire. His half brother George (age 30) succeeded 3rd Baron Hamilton of Hameldon in Leicestershire.

On 24th May 1806 [his father] John Campbell 5th Duke Argyll (age 82) died. His son George (age 37) succeeded 6th Duke Argyll.

On 29th November 1810 Henry William Paget 1st Marquess Anglesey (age 42) and [his future wife] Caroline Elizabeth Villiers Duchess Argyll (age 35) were divorced by an act of Parliament as a result of his having had an affair with Charlotte Cadogan Marchioness Anglesey (age 29) whose husband Henry Wellesley 1st Baron Cowley (age 37) also sought a divorce.

Around 19th December 1810, three weeks after her divorce, George William Campbell 6th Duke Argyll (age 42) and Caroline Elizabeth Villiers Duchess Argyll (age 36) were married at Canongate Kirk. She by marriage Duchess Argyll. She the daughter of George Bussy Villiers 4th Earl Jersey and Frances Twysden (age 57). He the son of John Campbell 5th Duke Argyll and Elizabeth Gunning Duchess Hamilton and Argyll.

On 8th January 1816 Edward Crofton 3rd Baronet (age 37) died. His son Edward (age 9) succeeded 3rd Baronet Crofton of The Mote in Roscommon. [his step-daughter] Georgina Paget Lady Crofton (age 15) by marriage Lady Crofton of The Mote in Roscommon.

On 10th April 1817 Charles Gordon-Lennox 5th Duke Richmond (age 25) and [his step-daughter] Caroline Paget Duchess Richmond (age 20) were married. She the daughter of Henry William Paget 1st Marquess Anglesey (age 48) and [his wife] Caroline Elizabeth Villiers Duchess Argyll (age 42). He the son of Charles Lennox 4th Duke Richmond (age 52) and Charlotte Gordon Duchess Richmond (age 48).

On 5th August 1819 [his step-son] Henry Paget 2nd Marquess Anglesey (age 22) and Eleanora Campbell were married. He the son of Henry William Paget 1st Marquess Anglesey (age 51) and [his wife] Caroline Elizabeth Villiers Duchess Argyll (age 44).

On 28th August 1819 Charles Lennox 4th Duke Richmond (age 54) died. His son Charles (age 28) succeeded 5th Duke Richmond, 5th Earl March, 5th Baron Settrington. [his step-daughter] Caroline Paget Duchess Richmond (age 23) by marriage Duchess Richmond.

In 1820 [his brother] John Douglas Edward Henry Campbell 7th Duke Argyll (age 42) and [his sister-in-law] Joan Glassel (age 45) were married. He the son of [his father] John Campbell 5th Duke Argyll and [his mother] Elizabeth Gunning Duchess Hamilton and Argyll.

In 1820 Arthur Chichester 1st Baron Templemore (age 22) and [his step-daughter] Augusta Paget Baroness Templemore (age 17) were married. She the daughter of Henry William Paget 1st Marquess Anglesey (age 51) and [his wife] Caroline Elizabeth Villiers Duchess Argyll (age 45).

On 23rd April 1824 Francis Nathaniel Conyngham 2nd Marquess Conyngham (age 26) and [his step-daughter] Jane Paget Marchioness Conyngham (age 25) were married. She the daughter of Henry William Paget 1st Marquess Anglesey (age 55) and [his wife] Caroline Elizabeth Villiers Duchess Argyll (age 49). On 27th August 1833 [his step-son] Henry Paget 2nd Marquess Anglesey (age 36) and Henrietta Bagot Marchioness Anglesey were married. He the son of Henry William Paget 1st Marquess Anglesey (age 65) and [his wife] Caroline Elizabeth Villiers Duchess Argyll (age 58). They were fifth cousin once removed.

On 19th October 1833 Edward Crofton 2nd Baron Crofton (age 27) and [his step-daughter] Georgina Paget Lady Crofton (age 33) were married. She the daughter of Henry William Paget 1st Marquess Anglesey (age 65) and [his wife] Caroline Elizabeth Villiers Duchess Argyll (age 58).

On 16th June 1835 [his wife] Caroline Elizabeth Villiers Duchess Argyll (age 60) died.

On 22nd October 1839 George William Campbell 6th Duke Argyll (age 71) died. His brother [his brother] John (age 61) succeeded 7th Duke Argyll, 4th Baron Hamilton of Hameldon in Leicestershire.

On 10th November 1839 George William Campbell 6th Duke Argyll (deceased) was buried at Kilmun Parish Church.

Adeline Horsey Recollections. I remember often meeting Lady Charlotte Cadogan, who ran away with Lord Anglesey; they lived together for some years until Lady Anglesey divorced her husband, and he was free to marry Lady Charlotte. Lady Anglesey, who was a daughter of the Earl of Jersey, afterwards married the sixth Duke of Argyll, but she was a great invalid and quite a cripple during the latter part of her life.
