The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.
Paternal Family Tree: Dalrymple
On 16th November 1784 John Dalrymple 7th Earl of Stair was born to William Dalrymple (age 48).
In 1804 John Dalrymple 7th Earl of Stair (age 19) and Johanna Gordon entered into a non-ceremonial marriage. Dalrymple subsequently denied any legal relationship with Johanna; Judge William Scott (later Lord Stowell) upheld the validity of the marriage under Scots law in the famous 1811 case of Dalrymple v. Dalrymple
On 16th February 1807 [his father] William Dalrymple (age 71) died.
On 2nd June 1808 John Dalrymple 7th Earl of Stair (age 23) and Laura Manners Countess Stair were married albeit bigamously since he had previously married Johanna Gordon. The marriage was necessarily nullified by the decision in Dalrymple v. Dalrymple in 1811. Darlymple's marriage to Johanna was eventually dissolved in 1820. She the daughter of John Manners and Louisa Tollemache 7th Countess Dysart (age 62).
On 19th February 1816 [his sister-in-law] Louisa Grace Manners Duchess St Albans (age 39) died. The same day her son Aubrey Beauclerk 7th Duke St Albans died. His uncle William (age 49) succeeded 8th Duke St Albans, 8th Earl Burford, 8th Baron Heddington, 5th Baron Vere of Hanworth in Middlesex. Maria Janetta Nelthorpe Duchess St Albans by marriage Duchess St Albans. Both at the home of her sister [his wife] Laura Manners Countess Stair and her husband John Dalrymple 7th Earl of Stair (age 31) at Portman Square Marylebone.
On 1st June 1821 John Dalrymple 6th Earl of Stair (age 72) died without issue. His first cousin John (age 36) succeeded 7th Earl of Stair.
On 11th July 1834 [his wife] Laura Manners Countess Stair died.
On 22nd March 1840 John Dalrymple 7th Earl of Stair (age 55) died without issue. His third cousin once removed John (age 68) succeeded 8th Earl of Stair.
