All About History Books

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

In 1013 [his father] Alfonso "Noble" V King Leon (age 19) and [his mother] Elvira González Queen Consort Leon (age 17) were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Leon. He the son of [his grandfather] Bermudo "Gouty" II King Galicia II King Leon and [his grandmother] Elviro Garcia Queen Galicia (age 35).

Around 1015 Bermudo III King Leon was born to Alfonso "Noble" V King Leon (age 21) and Elvira González Queen Consort Leon (age 19).

On 2nd December 1022 [his father] Alfonso "Noble" V King Leon (age 28) and Urraca Jiménez Queen Consort Leon were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Leon. She the daughter of García Sánchez "Tremulous" II King Pamplona and Jimena Fernández Bermúdez Queen Consort Pamplona. He the son of [his grandfather] Bermudo "Gouty" II King Galicia II King Leon and [his grandmother] Elviro Garcia Queen Galicia. They were half first cousins.

On 2nd December 1022 [his mother] Elvira González Queen Consort Leon (age 26) died.

On 7th August 1028 [his father] Alfonso "Noble" V King Leon (age 34) died. His son Bermudo (age 13) succeeded III King Leon. Jimena Sánchez Jiménez Queen Consort Leon by marriage Queen Consort Leon.

In 1030 [his son] Alfonso Astur Leonese was born to Bermudo III King Leon (age 15) and Jimena Sánchez Jiménez Queen Consort Leon.

In 1030 [his son] Alfonso Astur Leonese died.

In 1037 Bermudo III King Leon (age 22) died. His half second cousin Ferdinand (age 22) succeeded I King Leon.
