Battle of Sluys

On 24 Jun 1340 King Edward III of England (age 27) attacked the French fleet at anchor during the Battle of Sluys capturing more than 200 ships, killing around 18000 French. The English force included John Beauchamp 1st Baron Beauchamp Warwick (age 24), William Bohun 1st Earl of Northampton (age 30), Henry Scrope 1st Baron Scrope Masham (age 27), William Latimer 4th Baron Latimer of Corby (age 10), John Lisle 2nd Baron Lisle (age 22), Ralph Stafford 1st Earl Stafford (age 38), Henry of Grosmont 1st Duke Lancaster (age 30), Walter Manny 1st Baron Manny (age 30), Hugh Despencer 1st Baron Despencer (age 32) and Richard Pembridge (age 20).

Thomas Monthermer 2nd Baron Monthermer (age 38) died from wounds. His daughter Margaret Monthermer Baroness Montagu 3rd Baroness Monthermer succeeded 3rd Baroness Monthermer.

On 31 May 1349 Thomas Wake 2nd Baron Wake of Liddell (age 52) died. He was buried at Haltemprice Priory [Map]. His sister Margaret Wake Countess Kent (age 52) succeeded 3rd Baroness Wake of Liddell.

On 26 Dec 1352 John Plantagenet 3rd Earl Kent (age 22) died. He was buried at Greyfriars Church, Winchester [Map]. Earl Kent extinct. His sister Joan "Fair Maid of Kent" Princess Wales (age 24) succeeded 5th Baroness Wake of Liddell. Some source suggest she also succeeded as 4th Countess of Kent but this is inconsistent with 1. her husband being created Earl of Kent as a new creation, and 2. her son not succeeding to the original Earldom?

On 12 Jan 1372 Walter Manny 1st Baron Manny (age 62) died. His daughter Anne Manny Countess Pembroke succeeded 2nd Baroness Manny. John Hastings 2nd Earl Pembroke (age 24) by marriage Baron Manny.

In 1375 Alice Boteler (age 35) died at Wem, Shropshire. Her sister Elizabeth Boteler Baroness Ferrers Wem (age 30) abeyance terminated 4th Baroness Wem and Oversley. Robert Ferrers Baron Wem and Oversley (age 34) by marriage Baron Wem and Oversley. Some sources suggest her husband was created Baron Ferrers of Wem and Oversley in this own right. Since his son Robert Ferrers (age 2) didn't succeed to a title when his father died it appears Robert Ferrers was summoned to Parliament in right of his wife ie jure uxoris, rather than being created a Baron in his won right.

In 1381 Gilbert Umfraville 9th Earl Angus (age 71) died. His niece Eleanor de Barrowden 4th Baroness Kyme succeeded 4th Baroness Kyme. Henry Tailboys Baron Kyme by marriage Baron Kyme.

On 27 Jul 1382 John Saye 4th Baron Say (age 9) died. His sister Elizabeth Saye 5th Baroness Say (age 15) succeeded 5th Baroness Say.

On 04 Apr 1386 John Botetort 2nd Baron Botetort (age 68) died. His granddaughter Joyce Botetort 3rd Baroness Botetort (age 18) succeeded 3rd Baroness Botetort.

In or after 1427 Elizabeth Fitzwarin 8th Baroness Fitzwarin (age 24) died. Her daughter Thomasine Hankford 9th Baroness Fitzwarin (age 4) succeeded 9th Baroness Fitzwarin.

Siege of Orléans

In 1429 Joan Fauconberg Countess Kent (age 22) abeyance terminated 6th Baroness Fauconberg. William Neville 1st Earl Kent (age 24) by marriage Baron Fauconberg. Not clear whether the abeyance was terminated as a consequence of an unknown sister of Joan Fauconberg Countess Kent (age 22) dying and Joan being the only remaining descendant.

On 25 Nov 1431 Walter Fitzwalter 7th Baron Fitzwalter (age 31) drowned at sea in a storm whilst returning from France.

Elizabeth Fitzwalter Baroness Dinham 8th Baroness Fitzwalter (age 1) succeeded 8th Baroness Fitzwalter. Note. Chronicle of Gregory 1432 states 24 Nov 1432 or, more specifically, "on Syn Kateryn ys eve" - St Katherine's feast day is 25 Nov.

On 05 Jan 1458 Thomas Dacre 6th Baron Dacre Gilsland (age 70) died. On 05 Jan 1458 His granddaughter Joan Dacre 7th Baroness Dacre Gilsland (age 25) succeeded 7th Baroness Dacre Gilsland.

Murder of Lord Scales

On 20 Jul 1460 Thomas Scales 7th Baron Scales (age 63) was murdered by boatmen whilst travelling from the Tower of London [Map] to Sanctuary, Westminster Abbey [Map]. His daughter Elizabeth Scales Countess Rivers succeeded 8th Baroness Scales. She was, or had been married to, Henry Bourchier (the year of his death may been 1458). She was in 1466 married to Anthony Woodville 2nd Earl Rivers (age 20), brother of King Edward IV's (age 18) wife Elizabeth Woodville Queen Consort England (age 23); an example of the Woodville family marrying rich heiresses.

Battle of Wakefield

On 30 Dec 1460 the Lancastrian army took their revenge for the defeats of the First Battle of St Albans and the Battle of Northampton during the Battle of Wakefield at Sandal Castle [Map]. The Lancastrian army was commanded by Henry Holland 3rd Duke Exeter (age 30), Henry Beaufort 2nd or 3rd Duke Somerset (age 24) and Henry Percy 3rd Earl of Northumberland (age 39), and included John Courtenay 15th Earl Devon (age 25) and William Gascoigne XIII (age 30), both knighted, and James Butler 1st Earl Wiltshire 5th Earl Ormonde (age 40), John "Butcher" Clifford 9th Baron Clifford (age 25), John Neville 1st Baron Neville of Raby (age 50), Thomas Ros 9th Baron Ros Helmsley (age 33), Henry Roos and Thomas St Leger (age 20).

The Yorkist army was heavily defeated.

Richard Plantagenet 3rd Duke York (age 49) was killed. His son King Edward IV of England (age 18) succeeded 4th Duke York, 7th Richard Plantagenet 3rd Duke York (age 49), 9th Earl Ulster, 3rd Earl Cambridge.

Thomas Neville (age 30), and Edward Bourchier were killed.

Father and son Thomas Harrington (age 60) and John Harrington (age 36) were killed, the former dying of his wounds the day after.

William Bonville 6th Baron Harington (age 18) was killed. His daughter Cecily Bonville Marchioness Dorset succeeded 7th Baroness Harington.

Thomas Parr (age 53) fought in the Yorkist army.

Following the battle Richard Neville Earl Salisbury (age 60) was beheaded by Thomas "Bastard of Exeter" Holland. William Bonville (age 40) was executed.

Edmund York 1st Earl of Rutland (age 17) was killed on Wakefield Bridge [Map] by John "Butcher" Clifford (age 25) by which he gained his sobriquet "Butcher". Earl of Rutland extinct.

Second Battle of St Albans

On 17 Feb 1461 the Lancastrian army defeated the Yorkist army at Second Battle of St Albans and rescued King Henry VI of England and II of France (age 39). The Lancastrian army was commanded by Henry Holland 3rd Duke Exeter (age 30) and included Henry Percy 3rd Earl of Northumberland (age 39), John Mowbray 3rd Duke of Norfolk (age 45), Henry Grey 4th or 7th Baron Grey of Codnor (age 26), Henry Roos and Richard Welles 7th Baron Welles, Baron Willoughby (age 33).

Thomas Ros 9th Baron Ros Helmsley (age 33), William Tailboys 7th Baron Kyme (age 46), John Talbot 3rd Earl of Shrewsbury (age 12) and Thomas Tresham (age 41) were knighted.

The Yorkist army included Richard "Kingmaker" Neville Earl Warwick, 6th Earl Salisbury (age 32), William Fitzalan 16th Earl Arundel (age 43), John Wenlock 1st Baron Wenlock (age 61) and Henry Bourchier 2nd Count Eu 1st Earl Essex (age 57). John Neville 1st Marquess Montagu (age 30) was captured. Robert Poynings (age 42) and James Luttrell (age 34) were killed.

John Grey (age 29) was killed fighting for Lancaster. A death that was to have far reaching consequences; his widow Elizabeth Woodville Queen Consort England (age 24) subsequently married King Edward IV of England (age 18).

During the battle William Bonville 1st Baron Bonville (age 68) and Thomas Kyriell (age 65) were assigned to the protection of the King Henry VI (age 39). After the battle both were beheaded against all decent laws of battle.

William Bonville 1st Baron Bonville (age 68) was beheaded. His great granddaughter Cecily Bonville Marchioness Dorset succeeded 2nd Baroness Bonville.

Thomas Kyriell (age 65) was beheaded.

William Cotton (age 21) was killed.

Welles' Rebellion and Battle of Losecoat Field aka Empingham

In 1475 Margaret Talbot died. Her sister Elizabeth Talbot Viscountess Lisle abeyance terminated 3rd Baroness Lisle.

Death of the Duke of Norfolk

On 14 Jan 1476 John Mowbray 4th Duke of Norfolk (age 31) died at Framlingham Castle, Suffolk [Map]. Suspicious since he was only 32? Duke Norfolk, Earl Surrey and Earl Nottingham extinct. His daughter Anne Mowbray 8th Countess Norfolk (age 3) succeeded 8th Countess Norfolk, 11th Baroness Mowbray, 12th Baroness Segrave and inherited the vast Mowbray estates. She was subsequently married to Richard of Shrewsbury 1st Duke York (age 2) two years later.

In 1513 Margaret York Countess of Salisbury (age 39) was restored 7th Baroness Montagu, 10th Baroness Montagu.

In 1519 Elizabeth Grey Countess Devon (age 13) died. Her aunt Elizabeth Grey Viscountess Lisle (age 39) succeeded 6th Baroness Lisle.

On 10 Nov 1521 Robert Willoughby 2nd Baron Willoughby 10th Baron Latimer (age 49) died at Bere Ferrers, Devon. He was buried at St Andrew's Church, Bere Ferrers [Map]. His granddaughter Elizabeth Willoughby 11th Baroness Latimer 3rd Baroness Willoughby Broke (age 9) succeeded 11th Baroness Latimer of Corby, 3rd Baroness Willoughby Broke. It isn't clear whether she claimed the titles since the law of succession by females when a peerage was created by writ was not established until 1696.

On 13 Mar 1540 Henry Bourchier 2nd Earl Essex 3rd Count Eu died. Earl Essex, Viscount Bourchier extinct. His daughter Anne Bourchier 7th Baroness Bourchier (age 23) succeeded 7th Baroness Bourchier. John Bourchier 2nd Earl Bath (age 41) succeeded 2nd Count Eu. Neither he or his descendants used the title.

On 14 Apr 1587 Edward Manners 3rd Earl of Rutland (age 37) died at his home Ivy Bridge on the Strand [Map] or at Puddle Wharf aka Dock [Map]. He was buried at St Mary the Virgin Church, Bottesford, Leicestershire [Map]. His daughter Elizabeth Manners 15th Baroness Ros Helmsley (age 12) succeeded 15th Baroness Ros Helmsley. His brother John Manners 4th Earl of Rutland (age 36) succeeded 4th Earl of Rutland. Elizabeth Charlton Countess Rutland (age 34) by marriage Countess of Rutland. He would be Earl for ten months only dying on 24 Feb 1588.

On 25 May 1604 Mary Neville 3rd Baroness Despencer (age 50) abeyance terminated 3rd Baroness Despencer with precedence from 1264. The abeyance termination was of the third creation since she was the 3rd Baroness, and none of the previous creations had only two holders?

On 30 Oct 1605 George Clifford 3rd Earl of Cumberland (age 47) died. His brother Francis Clifford 4th Earl of Cumberland (age 46) succeeded 4th Earl of Cumberland. His daughter Anne Clifford Countess Dorset and Pembroke (age 15) succeeded 14th Baroness de Clifford.

Francis Clifford 4th Earl of Cumberland (age 46) bequeathed to Anne the sum of £15,000 in lieu of the estates she was legally entitled to. She engaged in a long and complex legal battle to obtain the family estates. In 1643, when Henry Clifford 5th Earl of Cumberland (age 14) died she regained her estates.

On 29 Jan 1622 Francis Norreys 1st Earl Berkshire (age 42) shot himself with a crossbow at Rycote, Oxfordshire [Map]; probably deliberately.

On 31 Jan 1622 Francis Norreys 1st Earl Berkshire (age 42) died of the wounds he had received two days earlier. He was buried at Dorchester on Thames, Oxfordshire [Map]. His daughter Elizabeth Norreys 3rd Baroness Norreys Rycote (age 19) succeeded 3rd Baroness Norreys Rycote. Earl Berkshire and Viscount Thame extinct.

Around 04 Jan 1626 Joane Ogle Countess Shrewsbury and Waterford (age 60) died. Her sister Catherine Ogle 8th Baroness Ogle (age 56) abeyance terminated 8th Baroness Ogle.

On 30 Sep 1628 Fulk Greville 13th Baron Latimer 5th Baron Willoughby 1st Baron Brooke (age 73) was killed at his house in London by servant Ralph Haywood who believed that he had been cheated in his master's will; Haywood then turned the knife on himself. He was buried at St Mary's Church, Warwick [Map]. His sister Margaret Greville 14th Baroness Latimer 6th Baroness Willoughby Broke (age 67) de jure 14th Baroness Latimer of Corby, 6th Baroness Willoughby Broke. Richard Verney 14th Baron Latimer 6th Baron Willoughby (age 65) by marriage Baron Latimer of Corby, Baron Willoughby Broke. His first cousin once removed Robert Greville 2nd Baron Brooke (age 21) succeeded 2nd Baron Brooke of Beauchamps Court in Warwickshire.

On 30 May 1630 Emanuel Scrope 1st Earl of Sunderland (age 45) died. Earl of Sunderland extinct. His aunt Mary Scrope de jure 12th Baroness Scrope of Bolton; she didn't claim the title.

After 30 May 1630 Mary Scrope died. Her daughter Catherine Bowes de jure 13th Baroness Scrope of Bolton.

On 14 Jun 1643 Charles Longueville 12th Baron Grey of Ruthyn (age 31) died. His daughter Susan Longueville 13th Baroness Grey of Ruthyn succeeded 13th Baroness Grey of Ruthyn.

Anne Clifford Countess Dorset and Pembroke (age 53) regained the estates she had been legally entitled to since her father died in 1605.

On 03 Aug 1734 Margaret Tufton Countess Leicester (age 34) abeyance terminated 19th Baroness de Clifford when she became the only living descendant of her father.

His fifth cousin once removed Theophilus Henry Hastings 11th Earl Huntingdon (age 60) de jure 11th Earl Huntingdon although he wasn't aware of the fact. The KING has been pleased, by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, bearing date the 7th instant, to declare that Edith Maud, Countess of Loudoun, is and shall be Baroness Botreaux and Baroness Hastings; and to give, grant and confirm the Baronies of Botreaux and Hastings which fell into abeyance on the death of Charles Edward Hastings, Earl of Loudoun, on the 17th day of May, 1920, to the said Edith Maud (age 37), Countess of Loudoun: To have and to hold the said Baronies, together with all the rights, privileges, pre-eminences, immunities and advantages, and the place and precedence due and (belonging thereto to her and to the heirs of her body lawfully begotten and to be begotten in as full and ample a manner as the said Charles Edward Hastings; Earl of Loudoun, or any of his ancestors held and enjoyed the same.

And also to declare that the said Edith Maud, Countess of Loudoun, is and shall be Baroness Stanley; and: to give, grant and confirm, the Barony of Stanley which, fell into abeyance on the death of Ferdinando, 5th Earl of Derby, in the year 1594, to the said Edith Maud, Countess of Loudoun (age 37): To have and to hold the said Barony, together with, all the rights, privileges, pre-eminences, immunities and advantages, and the place and precedence due and belonging thereto to her and to the heirs of her body lawfully (begotten and to be begotten in as full and ample a manner as the said Ferdinando, 5th Earl of Derby, or any of ihis ancestors held and enjoyed the same.

Note. Edith Maud Rawdon-Hastings 12th Countess Loudon (age 37) abeyance terminated 23rd Baroness Botreaux, 7th Baroness Stanley and 20th Baroness Hastings. She and her sister Elizabeth Frances Abney-Hastings Viscountess St Davids (age 36) had petitioned the Committee for Privileges for six titles Baron Strange Knockin, Baron Botreaux, Baron Hungerford, Baron Moleyns, Baron Stanley and Baron Hastings. The titles were shared three each between them.

On 17 May 1937 Emily Thicknesse-Touchet died. Her sister Mary Thicknesse-Touchet 22nd Baroness Audley (age 78) abeyance terminated 22nd Baroness Audley of Heighley in Staffordshire.

On 23 Mar 1943 Mervyn Horatio Herbert 17th Baron Darcy of Knayth (age 38) died whilst on active service. He was buried at St Mary's Church, Welshpool.

He was participating in a training night exercise when his Mosquito intercepted a Stirling bomber returning from a leaflet dropping raid in Europe, following which the Mosquito crashed into the ground near Manningtree [Map], killing both Herbert and his navigator Albert Eastwood; possibly a friendly fire incident?
