Biography of Lewis Watson 1st Baron Rockingham 1584-1653

Before 14 Jul 1587 [his father] Edward Watson of Rockingham Castle (age 38) and [his mother] Anne Digby (age 41) were married.

On 14 Jul 1587 Lewis Watson 1st Baron Rockingham was born to Edward Watson of Rockingham Castle (age 38) and Anne Digby (age 41). Some sources say 1584.

On 25 Jun 1601 Peregrine Bertie 13th Baron Willoughby (age 45) died at Berwick on Tweed [Map]. His son [his future brother-in-law] Robert Bertie 1st Earl Lindsey (age 18) succeeded 14th Baron Willoughby de Eresby. He was buried at St James' Church, Spilsby [Map].

On 15 Feb 1610 [his future wife] Catherine Bertie (age 15) died in childbirth. She was buried at St James' Church, Spilsby [Map].

Monument Elizabethan Period. Tall Sideboard Tomb with reclining hooded figure of Lady Katherine, daughter of Peregrine, with Chrisom Child in the crib at her feet. Above a standing figure of Peregrine Bertie 13th Baron Willoughby (age 45) in a niche, with strapwork embellishments, all supported on composite columns with a dentilated cornice.

Catherine Bertie: Around 1595 she was born to Peregrine Bertie 13th Baron Willoughby and Mary Vere Baroness Willoughby Eresby. Sources are confused about her birth year stating she was born in 1610 and that she married in 1609. Date adjusted to around 1595 on the assumption she was married around twenty years of age. Her son died at six days old on 09 Feb 1610. Her father died in 1601. Sources also refer to her as Baroness Rockingham whereas she died some eleven years before her husband was created Baron Rockingham. In 1609 Lewis Watson 1st Baron Rockingham and she were married.

In 1609 Lewis Watson 1st Baron Rockingham (age 21) and Catherine Bertie (age 14) were married.

On 17 Feb 1611 [his mother] Anne Digby (age 65) died.

On 14 Apr 1616 Robert Sutton 1st Baron Lexinton (age 21) and [his future sister-in-law] Elizabeth Manners Baroness Lexington (age 21) were married. She by marriage Baroness Lexinton.

On 01 Mar 1617 [his father] Edward Watson of Rockingham Castle (age 68) died at Rockingham, Northamptonshire [Map].

On 03 Oct 1620 Lewis Watson 1st Baron Rockingham (age 33) and Eleanor Manners Baroness Rockingham (age 20) were married.

On 23 Jun 1621 Lewis Watson 1st Baron Rockingham (age 33) was created 1st Baronet Watson of Rockingham Castle in Northamptonshire. [his wife] Eleanor Manners Baroness Rockingham (age 21) by marriage Lady Watson of Rockingham Castle in Northamptonshire.

After 23 Apr 1623. Monument to [his father-in-law] George Manners (deceased) and [his mother-in-law] Grace Pierrepont (age 48) at All Saint's Church, Bakewell, Derbyshire [Map]. Jacobean Kneeling monument representing them and their nine children, four boys (one died an infant) on the left, five girls on the right.

The armorials include: Manners Augmented Arms Manners Augmented with a Crescent difference.

Their son John 8th Earl Rutland (age 18) was married to Frances Montagu Countess Rutland (age 9).

Their daughter Dorothy Manners (age 13) married Thomas Lake (age 28).

Their daughter Frances (age 23) was married to Nicholas Saundeson 2nd Viscount Castleton.

Their daughter Eleanor (age 23) was married to Lewis Watson 1st Baron Rockingham (age 35).

In 1627 [his brother-in-law] Roger Manners (age 17) died.

On 30 Jun 1630 [his son] Edward Watson 2nd Baron Rockingham was born to Lewis Watson 1st Baron Rockingham (age 42) and [his wife] Eleanor Manners Baroness Rockingham (age 30).

In or before 1633 Thomas Lake (age 38) and [his sister-in-law] Dorothy Manners (age 22) were married.

Around 1635 [his sister-in-law] Elizabeth Manners Baroness Lexington (age 40) died.

Before 13 Nov 1639 [his former brother-in-law] Peregrine Bertie (age 55) died. He 13 Nov 1639 Peregrine Bertie (age 55) was buried at St Giles in the Fields Church, Camden [Map].

On 29 Jan 1645 Lewis Watson 1st Baron Rockingham (age 57) was created 1st Baron Rockingham of Northampton for having served the King during the Civil War. [his wife] Eleanor Manners Baroness Rockingham (age 45) by marriage Baroness Rockingham of Northampton.

In 1652 [his sister-in-law] Frances Manners (age 52) died.

Around 1653 [his sister-in-law] Dorothy Manners (age 43) died.

On 05 Jan 1653 Lewis Watson 1st Baron Rockingham (age 65) died. His son [his son] Edward Watson 2nd Baron Rockingham (age 22) succeeded 2nd Baron Rockingham of Northampton, 2nd Baronet Watson of Rockingham Castle in Northamptonshire. On 23 Oct 1679 [his former wife] Eleanor Manners Baroness Rockingham (age 79) died.

Before 12 Oct 1631 Nicholas Saundeson 2nd Viscount Castleton and Frances Manners were married.
