Biography of Thomas Hickman Windsor 1st Earl Plymouth 1627-1687

Paternal Family Tree: Hickman aka Windsor

In 1627 Thomas Hickman Windsor 1st Earl Plymouth was born to Dixie Hickman of Kew (age 37) and Elizabeth Windsor.

On 12 May 1656 Thomas Hickman Windsor 1st Earl Plymouth (age 29) and Anne Savile (age 22) were married.

In or before 1658 [his daughter] Mary Windsor Lady Cookes was born to Thomas Hickman Windsor 1st Earl Plymouth (age 30) and [his wife] Anne Savile (age 23).

In 1659 [his son] Other Windsor was born to Thomas Hickman Windsor 1st Earl Plymouth (age 32) and [his wife] Anne Savile (age 25).

In 1660 Thomas Hickman Windsor 1st Earl Plymouth (age 33) abeyance terminated 7th Baron Windsor of Stanwell in Buckinghamshire when [his aunt] Margaret Windsor died. Not clear whether his mother [his mother] Elizabeth Windsor had also died by this time?

On 18 Jul 1661 Robert Shafto Of Whitworth (age 27) and [his future sister-in-law] Catherine Widdrington (age 19) were married.

Pepy's Diary. 10 Apr 1662. Thence to the office all the afternoon. My Lord Windsor (age 35) came to us to discourse of his affairs, and to take his leave of us; he being to go Governor of Jamaica with this fleet that is now going. Late at the office. Home with my mind full of business. So to bed.

Pepy's Diary. 13 Feb 1663. Took my wife home, and I to my office. Find myself pretty well but fearful of cold, and so to my office, where late upon business; Mr. Bland sitting with me, talking of my Lord Windsor's (age 36) being come home from Jamaica, unlooked-for; which makes us think that these young Lords are not fit to do any service abroad, though it is said that he could not have his health there, but hath razed a fort of the King of Spain (age 57) upon Cuba, which is considerable, or said to be so, for his honour.

Pepy's Diary. 23 Feb 1663. This morning came my Lord Windsor (age 36) to kiss the Duke's (age 29) hand, being returned from Jamaica. He tells the Duke (age 29), that from such a degree of latitude going thither he begun to be sick, and was never well till his coming so far back again, and then presently begun to be well. He told the Duke (age 29) of their taking the fort of St. Jago, upon Cuba, by his men; but, upon the whole, I believe that he did matters like a young lord, and was weary of being upon service out of his own country, where he might have pleasure. For methought it was a shame to see him this very afternoon, being the first day of his coming to town, to be at a playhouse.

Pepy's Diary. 03 Apr 1663. I find at Court that there is some bad news from Ireland of an insurrection of the Catholiques there, which puts them into an alarm. I hear also in the City that for certain there is an embargo upon all our ships in Spayne, upon this action of my Lord Windsor's (age 36) at Cuba, which signifies little or nothing, but only he hath a mind to say that he hath done something before he comes back again. Late tonight I sent to invite my uncle Wight and aunt with Mrs. Turner (age 40) to-morrow.

On 09 Apr 1668 Thomas Hickman Windsor 1st Earl Plymouth (age 41) and Ursula Widdrington Countess Plymouth (age 20) were married. They had six children. The difference in their ages was 20 years.

Around 1670 [his son] Thomas Windsor 1st Viscount Windsor was born to Thomas Hickman Windsor 1st Earl Plymouth (age 43) and [his wife] Ursula Widdrington Countess Plymouth (age 22).

Evelyn's Diary. 23 Nov 1670. Dined with the Earl of Arlington (age 52), where was the Venetian Ambassador, of whom I now took solemn leave, now on his return. There were also Lords Howard, Wharton (age 57), Windsor (age 43), and divers other great persons.

On 28 Aug 1672, a month after his father died, [his son-in-law] Thomas Cookes 2nd Baronet (age 24) and [his daughter] Mary Windsor Lady Cookes (age 14) were married. She by marriage Lady Cookes of Norgrove in Worcestershire. She the daughter of Thomas Hickman Windsor 1st Earl Plymouth (age 45) and Anne Savile (age 38).

On 31 Aug 1676 [his sister-in-law] Catherine Widdrington (age 34) died.

On 06 Dec 1682 Thomas Hickman Windsor 1st Earl Plymouth (age 55) was created 1st Earl Plymouth. [his wife] Ursula Widdrington Countess Plymouth (age 35) by marriage Countess Plymouth.

In 1684 [his son] Other Windsor (age 25) died.

On 06 Oct 1687 [his sister-in-law] Henry Savile (age 45) died.

On 03 Nov 1687 Thomas Hickman Windsor 1st Earl Plymouth (age 60) died. His grandson Other Windsor 2nd Earl Plymouth (age 8) succeeded 2nd Earl Plymouth, 8th Baron Windsor of Stanwell in Buckinghamshire.
