Biography of John Dunbar 1st Earl Moray 1342-1391

Before 1338 [his father] Patrick Dunbar 9th Earl March (age 53) and [his mother] Agnes "Black Agnes" Randolph Countess March (age 25) were married. She by marriage Countess Dunbar aka March 1C. The difference in their ages was 27 years. She the daughter of Thomas Randolph 1st Earl Moray and Isabella Stewart Countess Moray.

In 1342 John Dunbar 1st Earl Moray was born to Patrick Dunbar 9th Earl March (age 57) and Agnes "Black Agnes" Randolph Countess March (age 30).

In 1369 [his father] Patrick Dunbar 9th Earl March (age 84) died. His son [his brother] George Dunbar 10th Earl March (age 31) succeeded 10th Earl Dunbar aka March 1C.

In 1369 [his mother] Agnes "Black Agnes" Randolph Countess March (age 57) died.

Before 1371 John Dunbar 1st Earl Moray (age 29) and Marjorie Stewart Countess Moray (age 22) were married. She the daughter of King Robert II of Scotland (age 54) and Elizabeth Mure Queen Consort Scotland. He the son of Patrick Dunbar 9th Earl March and Agnes "Black Agnes" Randolph Countess March. They were half third cousins. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King John "Lackland" of England.

Around 1371 [his son] Thomas Dunbar 2nd Earl Moray was born to John Dunbar 1st Earl Moray (age 29) and [his wife] Marjorie Stewart Countess Moray (age 23).

Before 07 Nov 1372 Thomas Hay 7th Baron Erroll (age 30) and [his sister-in-law] Elizabeth Stewart (age 22) were married. She the daughter of King Robert II of Scotland (age 56) and Elizabeth Mure Queen Consort Scotland. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King John "Lackland" of England.

In 1374 John Dunbar 1st Earl Moray (age 32) was created 4th Earl Moray. [his wife] Marjorie Stewart Countess Moray (age 26) by marriage Countess Moray. He was a nephew of the previous Earl of Moray [his uncle] John Randolph 3rd Earl Moray who was brother of his mother [his aunt] Isabella Randolph.

Before 27 Dec 1375 John Keith (age 24) and [his sister-in-law] Princess Johanna aka Jean Stewart (age 25) were married. She the daughter of King Robert II of Scotland (age 59) and Elizabeth Mure Queen Consort Scotland. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King John "Lackland" of England.

In 1376 John Lyon Lord of Glamis (age 36) and [his sister-in-law] Princess Johanna aka Jean Stewart (age 26) were married. She the daughter of King Robert II of Scotland (age 59) and Elizabeth Mure Queen Consort Scotland. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King John "Lackland" of England.

In 1387 William "Nithsdale" Douglas (age 23) and [his sister-in-law] Princess Egidia Stewart (age 19) were married. She the daughter of King Robert II of Scotland (age 70) and Euphemia Ross Queen Consort Scotland. He the illegitmate son of Archibald "Grim" Douglas 3rd Earl Douglas (age 57). They were third cousins. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King John "Lackland" of England.

Around 1388 [his sister-in-law] Princess Egidia Stewart (age 20) died.

Froissart. Before 05 Aug 1388. Now let us speak of the earl Douglas (age 30) and other, for they had more to do than they that went by Carlisle, Cumberland [Map]. When the earls of Douglas (age 30), of Moray (age 46), of [his brother] March, and Dunbar (age 50)1 departed from the great host, they took their way thinking to pass the water and to enter into the bishopric of Durham, and to ride to the town and then to return, brenning and exiling the country and so to come to Newcastle [Map] and to lodge there in the town in the despite of all the Englishmen. And as they determined, so they did assay to put it in use, for they rode a great pace under covert without doing of any pillage by the way or assaulting of any castle, tower or house, but so came into the lord Percy's land and passed the river of Tyne without any let a three leagues above Newcastle not far from Brancepeth, and at last entered into the bishopric of Durham, where they found a good country. Then they began to make war, to slay people and to bren villages and to do many sore displeasures.

Battle of Otterburn

On either 05 Aug 1388 or 19 Aug 1388 a Scottish army commanded by John Swinton defeated an English army commanded by Henry "Hotspur" Percy (age 24) during the Battle of Otterburn at Otterburn [Map]. Henry "Hotspur" Percy (age 24) and his brother Ralph Percy (age 29) were captured as was Matthew Redman (age 60). The English suffered 1000 killed, 2000 captured. The Scottish 100 killed, 200 captured.

On the Scottish side James Douglas 2nd Earl Douglas (age 30) was killed. His sister Isabel Douglas Countess Mar (age 28) succeeded Countess Mar.

John Dunbar 1st Earl Moray (age 46) fought.

In 1389 [his sister-in-law] Elizabeth Stewart (age 39) died.

On 15 Feb 1390 Alexander Keith (age 50) and [his wife] Marjorie Stewart Countess Moray (age 42) were married. She the daughter of King Robert II of Scotland (age 73) and Elizabeth Mure Queen Consort Scotland. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King John "Lackland" of England.

In 1391 John Dunbar 1st Earl Moray (age 49) was killed in a tournament at York [Map] from wounds received from Thomas Mowbray 4th Earl Norfolk 2nd Earl Nottingham (age 5). His son [his son] Thomas Dunbar 2nd Earl Moray (age 20) succeeded 5th Earl Moray.

On 06 May 1417 [his former wife] Marjorie Stewart Countess Moray (age 69) died.

[his daughter] Elizabeth Dunbar was born to John Dunbar 1st Earl Moray and Marjorie Stewart Countess Moray.
