Biography of Anne Liddell Duchess Grafton 1737-1804

Paternal Family Tree: Liddell

Richard Fitzpatrick 1st Baron Gowran: On 27th April 1715 Richard Fitzpatrick 1st Baron Gowran was created 1st Baron Gowran of Bowran in County Kilkenny. In 1718 he and Anne Robinson Baroness Gowran were married. She by marriage Baroness Gowran of Bowran in County Kilkenny.

Anne Robinson Baroness Gowran: she was born to John Robinson. On 24th November 1744 she died.

Around 1737 Anne Liddell Duchess Grafton was born to Henry Liddell 1st Baron Ravensworth (age 29) at Derby, Derbyshire [Map].

On 29th January 1756 Augustus Henry Fitzroy 3rd Duke Grafton (age 20) and Anne Liddell Duchess Grafton (age 19) were married.

On 6th May 1757 Charles Fitzroy 2nd Duke Grafton (age 73) died. His grandson [her husband] Augustus (age 21) succeeded 3rd Duke Grafton, 3rd Earl Euston, 3rd Viscount Ipswich, 3rd Baron Sudbury, 4th Earl Arlington, 4th Viscount Thetford, 4th Baron Arlington of Arlington in Middlesex and 4th Baron Arlington of Arlington in Middlesex. Anne Liddell Duchess Grafton (age 20) by marriage Duchess Grafton.

On 8th May 1757 [her daughter] Georgiana Fitzroy was born to [her husband] Augustus Henry Fitzroy 3rd Duke Grafton (age 21) and Anne Liddell Duchess Grafton (age 20). She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 14th January 1760 [her son] George Henry Fitzroy 4th Duke Grafton was born to [her husband] Augustus Henry Fitzroy 3rd Duke Grafton (age 24) and Anne Liddell Duchess Grafton (age 23). He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 14th July 1764 [her son] Charles Fitzroy was born to [her husband] Augustus Henry Fitzroy 3rd Duke Grafton (age 28) and Anne Liddell Duchess Grafton (age 27). He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 23rd March 1769 Augustus Henry Fitzroy 3rd Duke Grafton (age 33) and Anne Liddell Duchess Grafton (age 32) were divorced when he discovered she was pregnant by her lover John Fitzpatrick 2nd Earl Upper Ossory (age 23) whom she subsequently married. Plans to marry his mistress Anne aka Nancy Parsons Viscountess Maynard (age 34), if they existed, were undermined by the the discovery he discovered she was having an affair with John Frederick Sackville 3rd Duke Dorset (age 23).

After 23rd March 1769 [her daughter] Anne Fitzpatrick was born to [her husband] John Fitzpatrick 2nd Earl Upper Ossory (age 23) and Anne Liddell Duchess Grafton (age 32).

After 23rd March 1769 [her daughter] Gertrude Fitzpatrick was born to [her husband] John Fitzpatrick 2nd Earl Upper Ossory (age 23) and Anne Liddell Duchess Grafton (age 32).

After 23rd March 1769 John Fitzpatrick 2nd Earl Upper Ossory (age 23) and Anne Liddell Duchess Grafton (age 32) were married. She by marriage Countess Upper Ossory. He the son of John Fitzpatrick 1st Earl Upper Ossory and Evelyn Leveson-Gower Countess Upper Ossory.

On 24th June 1769, three months after his divorce from his first wife Anne Liddell Duchess Grafton (age 32), [her former husband] Augustus Henry Fitzroy 3rd Duke Grafton (age 33) and Elizabeth Wrottesley Duchess Grafton (age 23) were married. She by marriage Duchess Grafton. They were sixth cousins. He a great x 2 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

After 5th January 1771 William Petty 1st Marquess Lansdowne (age 33) and [her sister-in-law] Louisa Fitzpatrick Marchioness Lansdowne (age 16) were married. She by marriage Countess Shelburne in County Wexford. She the daughter of John Fitzpatrick 1st Earl Upper Ossory and Evelyn Leveson-Gower Countess Upper Ossory. He the son of John Petty-Fitzmaurice 1st Earl Shelburne.

The Deeds of King Henry V, or in Latin Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

On 25th September 1777 John Tollemache (age 27) was killed in a duel in New York by Lowther Pennington. His two-year old son John Tollemache (age 2) was adopted by his brother Lionel Tollemache 5th Earl Dysart (age 43). Pennington was “accused of the Murder of the Honorable John Tollemache, Captain in the Royal Navy, and Commander of His Majesty’s Ship of War, Zebra.” Concluding, the court, “having considered the Evidence against the Prisoner Captain Lowther Pennington, together with what he had to Offer in his Defence, is of Opinion that he is not guilty of the Crime of which he stood accused, and doth therefore Acquit him.”

September 29, New-York Gazette: "The Evening after the Arrival of the Fleet [September 25], a duel, with Swords, was fought at Hull’s, between the Honorable J Talmash (Brother to Earl Dysert) Commander of the Zebra, and Capt Pennington (Son to Sir Ralph Pennington) of the Guards, who came Passenger in the Zebra; in which the former received a Wound under the left Breast of which he expired immediately; the latter was wounded in 7 different Parts, but is like to do well. Captain Talmash’s Corpse were [sic] decently interred in Trinity Church Yard last Saturday Evening."

October 4, Rivington’s New-York Gazette: "An unhappy difference having taken place on the passage between the Hon Capt Tollemache, of the Zebra, brother to the Right Hon the Earl of Dysert, and Capt Pennington, of the Guards, brother to Sir Joseph Pennington, it terminated in a duel on the night of their arrival, at Hull’s Tavern, when the former was killed by a thrust in the breast, and the latter who received three wounds is in very great danger."

[her brother-in-law] General Richard FitzPatrick (age 29) to his sister-in-law Anne Liddell FitzRoy FitzPatrick (age 40), Countess of [Upper] Ossory: "Captain Tollemache is killed in a duel by a wrongheaded officer in the Guards, a Mr Pennington, whom he brought over in his ship. As it happened at New York, we do not know the particulars, but everybody concludes the latter to have been in the wrong, from his general character. I cannot help pitying Lady Bridget, though she is a detestable woman."

On 4th June 1778 [her son-in-law] John Smyth (age 30) and [her daughter] Georgiana Fitzroy (age 21) were married. She the daughter of [her former husband] Augustus Henry Fitzroy 3rd Duke Grafton (age 42) and Anne Liddell Duchess Grafton (age 41).

In 1784 William Petty 1st Marquess Lansdowne (age 46) was created 1st Marquess Lansdowne. [her sister-in-law] Louisa Fitzpatrick Marchioness Lansdowne (age 29) by marriage Marchioness Lansdowne.

On 30th January 1784 [her father] Henry Liddell 1st Baron Ravensworth (age 76) died without male issue. Baron Ravensworth extinct. His nephew Henry (age 34) succeeded 5th Baronet Liddell of Ravensworth Castle.

On 16th November 1784 [her son] George Henry Fitzroy 4th Duke Grafton (age 24) and [her daughter-in-law] Charlotte Maria Waldegrave (age 23) were married at Navestock, Essex. She the daughter of James Waldegrave 2nd Earl Waldegrave and Maria Walpole Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh (age 48). He the son of [her former husband] Augustus Henry Fitzroy 3rd Duke Grafton (age 49) and Anne Liddell Duchess Grafton (age 47). They were fourth cousin once removed. He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 7th August 1789 [her sister-in-law] Louisa Fitzpatrick Marchioness Lansdowne (age 34) died.

On 20th June 1795 [her son] Charles Fitzroy (age 30) and [her daughter-in-law] Frances Mundy were married. He the son of [her former husband] Augustus Henry Fitzroy 3rd Duke Grafton (age 59) and Anne Liddell Duchess Grafton (age 58).

On 10th January 1799 [her daughter] Georgiana Fitzroy (age 41) died.

In 1804 Anne Liddell Duchess Grafton (age 67) died at Grosvenor Square, Belgravia.

On 14th March 1811 [her former husband] Augustus Henry Fitzroy 3rd Duke Grafton (age 75) died. His son [her son] George (age 51) succeeded 4th Duke Grafton, 4th Earl Euston, 4th Viscount Ipswich, 4th Baron Sudbury, 5th Earl Arlington, 5th Viscount Thetford, 5th Baron Arlington of Arlington in Middlesex and 5th Baron Arlington of Arlington in Middlesex.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.
