In 1709 [his father] Anthony Ashley-Cooper 3rd Earl Shaftesbury (age 37) and [his mother] Jane Ewer Countess Shafetsbury (age 29) were married. She by marriage Countess Shaftesbury. He the son of [his grandfather] Anthony Ashley-Cooper 2nd Earl Shaftesbury and [his grandmother] Dorothy Manners Countess Shaftesbury. They were third cousins.
On 9th February 1711 Anthony Ashley-Cooper 4th Earl Shaftesbury was born to [his father] Anthony Ashley-Cooper 3rd Earl Shaftesbury (age 39) and [his mother] Jane Ewer Countess Shafetsbury (age 31).
On 16th February 1713 [his father] Anthony Ashley-Cooper 3rd Earl Shaftesbury (age 41) died. His son Anthony (age 2) succeeded 4th Earl Shaftesbury, 4th Baron Ashley of Wimborne St Giles, 5th Baronet Cooper of Rockbourne in Southampton.

Before 1758 Anthony Ashley-Cooper 4th Earl Shaftesbury (age 46) and Susannah Noel Countess Shaftesbury (age 47) were married. She by marriage Countess Shaftesbury. She the daughter of Baptist Noel 3rd Earl Gainsborough and Dorothy Manners Countess Gainsborough. He the son of Anthony Ashley-Cooper 3rd Earl Shaftesbury and Jane Ewer Countess Shafetsbury. They were second cousins.
The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

He married 17th July 1786 his sixth cousin Barbara Webb Countess Shaftesbury, daughter of John Webb 5th Baronet and Mary Salvin Lady Webb, and had issue.
In 1765 [his brother-in-law] William Pleydell-Bouverie 1st Earl Radnor (age 39) was created 1st Earl Radnor.
On 21st December 1768 [his son] Cropley Ashley-Cooper 6th Earl Shaftesbury was born to Anthony Ashley-Cooper 4th Earl Shaftesbury (age 57) and [his wife] Mary Bouverie Countess Shaftesbury (age 38). He married 1796 his third cousin twice removed Anne Spencer-Churchill Countess Shaftesbury, daughter of George Spencer 4th Duke of Marlborough and Caroline Russell Duchess of Marlborough, and had issue.
On 27th May 1771 Anthony Ashley-Cooper 4th Earl Shaftesbury (age 60) died. His son Anthony (age 9) succeeded 5th Earl Shaftesbury, 5th Baron Ashley of Wimborne St Giles, 6th Baronet Cooper of Rockbourne in Southampton.

On 12th November 1804 [his former wife] Mary Bouverie Countess Shaftesbury (age 74) died.

In 1536, two weeks after the execution of Anne Boleyn, her brother George and four others, Lancelot du Carle, wrote an extraordinary letter that described Anne's life, and her trial and execution, to which he was a witness.
