In March 1574 Anthony Maria Browne 2nd Viscount Montagu was born to [his father] Anthony Browne [aged 21] and [his mother] Mary Dormer [aged 19].

In 1591 Anthony Maria Browne 2nd Viscount Montagu [aged 16] and Jane Sackville Viscountess Montague [aged 18] were married. She by marriage Viscountess Montagu. She the daughter of Thomas Sackville 1st Earl Dorset [aged 55] and Cicely Baker Countess Dorset [aged 56]. They were fourth cousin once removed.

On 29th June 1592 [his father] Anthony Browne [aged 39] died at Riverbank House Cowdray Midhurst. He was buried at Midhurst.

On 19th October 1592 [his grandfather] Anthony Browne 1st Viscount Montagu [aged 63] died. His grandson Anthony [aged 18] succeeded 2nd Viscount Montagu.

Gunpowder Plot

In October 1605 the Gunpowder Plot sought to blow up Parliament, with King James I of England and Ireland and VI of Scotland [aged 39] and his MPs. The conspirators included Robert Catesby [aged 33], Anthony Maria Browne 2nd Viscount Montagu [aged 31] and Edward Stourton 10th Baron Stourton [aged 50].

On 19th October 1592 Anthony Maria Browne 2nd Viscount Montagu [aged 18] inherited Cowdray House [Map]. During his tenure Guy Fawkes was briefly employed as a footman and, as a consequence, Anthony Maria Browne 2nd Viscount Montagu was briefly imprisoned for complicity in the Gunpowder Plot.

On 4th December 1592 [his brother-in-law] Robert Sackville 2nd Earl Dorset [aged 31] and Anne Spencer Countess Dorset were married. He the son of [his father-in-law] Thomas Sackville 1st Earl Dorset [aged 56] and [his mother-in-law] Cicely Baker Countess Dorset [aged 57].

Around 1593 [his daughter] Mary Browne was born to Anthony Maria Browne 2nd Viscount Montagu [aged 18] and [his wife] Jane Sackville Viscountess Montague [aged 20]. She married (1) her fourth cousin William Paulet, son of William Paulet 4th Marquess Winchester and Lucy Cecil Marchioness Winchester (2) 22nd October 1627 her second cousin William Arundell, son of Thomas Arundell 1st Baron Arundel and Mary Wriothesley Baroness Arundel Wardour, and had issue.

Around 1600 [his daughter] Catherine Browne was born to Anthony Maria Browne 2nd Viscount Montagu [aged 25] and [his wife] Jane Sackville Viscountess Montague [aged 27]. She married 1617 her fifth cousin once removed William Tyrwhitt and had issue.

In 1605 Anthony Maria Browne 2nd Viscount Montagu [aged 30] was imprisoned at Tower of London [Map].

On 19th April 1608 [his father-in-law] Thomas Sackville 1st Earl Dorset [aged 72] died suddenly at the council table, having apparently suffered a stroke. His funeral was held at Westminster Abbey [Map]. He was buried in the Sackville Chapel St Michael's Church Withyham East Sussex. His son [his brother-in-law] Robert [aged 47] succeeded 2nd Earl Dorset, 2nd Baron Buckhurst. Anne Spencer Countess Dorset by marriage Countess Dorset.

On 27th February 1609 Richard Sackville 3rd Earl Dorset [aged 19] and Anne Clifford Countess Dorset and Pembroke [aged 19] were married. The same day that his father [his brother-in-law] Robert Sackville 2nd Earl Dorset [aged 48] died. She the daughter of George Clifford 3rd Earl of Cumberland and Margaret Russell Countess Cumberland [aged 48]. He the son of Robert Sackville 2nd Earl Dorset and Margaret Howard. They were fourth cousin once removed.

On 27th February 1609 [his brother-in-law] Robert Sackville 2nd Earl Dorset [aged 48] died at Dorset House. He was buried at Sackville Chapel St Michael's Church Withyham East Sussex. His son Richard [aged 19] succeeded 3rd Earl Dorset, 3rd Baron Buckhurst and inherited Knole House, Sevenoaks. Anne Clifford Countess Dorset and Pembroke [aged 19] by marriage Countess Dorset.
