All About History Books
The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.
In 1521 [her son] Thomas Wyatt was born to [her husband] Thomas Wyatt (age 18) and Elizabeth Brooke (age 18).
On 19th July 1529 [her father] Thomas Brooke 8th Baron Cobham (age 59) died. He was buried at St Mary Magdalene New Churchyard, Cobham. His son [her brother] George (age 32) succeeded 9th Baron Cobham. Anne Braye Baroness Cobham (age 28) by marriage Baroness Cobham.
In 1537 [her son] Thomas Wyatt (age 16) and [her daughter-in-law] Jane Haute (age 15) were married. They had six sons and four daughters.
Letters and Papers Foreign and Domestic Henry VIII 1542. 9 Feb. [1542] Spanish Calendar, VI., I., No. 230. 92. Chapuys (age 52) To Charles V.
Wrote on the 29th ult of the Queen's condemnation and that of the duchess of Norfolk (age 65), her daughter (age 43), and lady Rochford (age 37). Till then the King had never been merry since first hearing of the Queen's misconduct; but he has been so since, especially on the 29th, when he gave a supper and banquet with 26 ladies at his table, besides gentlemen, and 35 at another table close by. The lady for whom he showed the greatest regard was the sister [Elizabeth Brooke (age 39)] of [her brother] lord Cobham (age 45), whom [her husband] Wyatt (age 39) sometime ago repudiated for adultery. She is a pretty young creature, with wit enough to do as badly as the others if she were to try. The King is also said to have a fancy for the daughter of Madame Albart1, niece, of the Grand Esquire, Master Anthony Brown, and also for a daughter [Anne Bassett (age 22)] (by her first marriage) of the wife (age 48) of Mons. Lyt (age 77), late deputy of Calais—a surmise which rests partly on the fact that after nearly two years' close confinement in the Tower, her father has been liberated, and the King has ordered his arms, which had been removed from their place in the chapel of the Order [Map], to be replaced2.
Note 1. Probably Lucy Somerset Baroness Latimer Snape (age 18), daughter of Elizabeth Browne Countess of Worcester (age 40), niece of Anthony Browne (age 42). "Albart" probably a corruption of "Herbert" since Lucy's father Henry Somerset (age 46) succeeded his mother as Baron Herbert in 1507.
Note 2. The text of this letter down to this point has been printed by Gachard in his "Analectes Historiques" (Series I.-IV.), 242-3.
On 11th October 1542 [her husband] Thomas Wyatt (age 39) died.
After 11th October 1542 Edward Warner (age 31) and Elizabeth Brooke (age 39) were married.
On 11th April 1554 [her son] Thomas Wyatt (age 33) was beheaded at Tower Hill [Map].
Dean Hugh Weston (age 49) acted as Confessor.
Around 1560 [her husband] Edward Warner (age 49) and Audrey Hare (age 19) were married. The difference in their ages was 30 years.
In August 1560 Elizabeth Brooke (age 57) died.
Henry Machyn's Diary. 10th August 1560. The x day of August was bered within the Towre [Map] withowt a offeser of armes, and (with) master Alley (age 50) the nuw byshope of Excetur, and the chyrch hangyd with blake and armes, my lade Warner (deceased), the wyff of ser [her former husband] Edward Warner (age 49).
Note. P. 241. Funeral of lady Warner. "Elizabeth, late wiff to sir Edward Warner knight, lieutenaunte of the tower of London; she was doter of Thomas Cobham, and dysceased the 8. of August 1560, and left issue a [son] whosse name is Edward." (MS. Harl. 897, f. 19.)
On 7th November 1565 [her former husband] Edward Warner (age 54) died. He was buried at St Protase and St Gervase Church, Little Plumstead [Map] where his marble grave-stone has the inscription:
Sir Edward Warner, Knight, now resteth here
Who lived to full 50 years and fower
His wifes also by armes you see appeare
What needeth then with words to blaze them o're
His virtues rare, would not be letten passe
Ne yet so worthy state in silence synke
But who dares wright his golden gifts in brasse
Or blot his fame with rude and silly inke
In somme therefore, let this be sayd for all
With God and man he liveth and ever shall
Obijt. 7°. die Nov. Ao. Domi. 1565.
