Biography of Elizabeth Howard Countess Carrick 1564-1646

In July 1563 [her father] Charles Howard 1st Earl Nottingham (age 27) and [her mother] Katherine Carey Countess Nottingham (age 13) were married. They were half first cousin twice removed.

On 3rd March 1564 Elizabeth Howard Countess Carrick was born to [her father] Charles Howard 1st Earl Nottingham (age 28) and [her mother] Katherine Carey Countess Nottingham (age 14) at Effingham, Surrey [Map]. Queen Elizabeth I of England and Ireland (age 30) was her Godmother.

On 12th January 1573 [her grandfather] William Howard 1st Baron Howard (age 63) died at Hampton Court Palace, Richmond [Map]. He was buried at Reigate, Surrey [Map]. His son [her father] Charles (age 37) succeeded 2nd Baron Howard of Effingham. [her mother] Katherine Carey Countess Nottingham (age 23) by marriage Baroness Howard of Effingham.

In 1575 [her father] Charles Howard 1st Earl Nottingham (age 39) was appointed 362nd Knight of the Garter by Queen Elizabeth I of England and Ireland (age 41).

In 1576 Elizabeth Howard Countess Carrick (age 11) was appointed Maid of Honour to Queen Elizabeth I of England and Ireland (age 42) which position she held until 1583.

On 4th October 1581 Henry Wriothesley 2nd Earl of Southampton (age 36) died. His son Henry (age 7) succeeded 3rd Earl of Southampton. His wardship was sold by the Queen to her kinsman, [her father] Charles, Lord Howard of Effingham (age 45), for £1000. Howard then transferred his wardship to William Cecil 1st Baron Burghley (age 61).

On 3rd March 1583 [her daughter] Elizabeth Southwell was born to Robert Southwell (age 14) and Elizabeth Howard Countess Carrick (age 19). She married 1606 her first cousin once removed Robert Dudley, son of Robert Dudley 1st Earl of Leicester and Douglas Howard Baroness Sheffield.

In 1585 [her father] Charles Howard 1st Earl Nottingham (age 49) was appointed Lord High Admiral.

In 1593 [her daughter] Catherine Southwell Baroness Latimer and Willoughby Broke was born to Robert Southwell (age 24) and Elizabeth Howard Countess Carrick (age 28). She married 13th May 1618 her sixth cousin Greville Verney 15th Baron Latimer 7th Baron Willoughby, son of Richard Verney 14th Baron Latimer 6th Baron Willoughby and Margaret Greville 14th Baroness Latimer 6th Baroness Willoughby of Broke, and had issue.

In 1596 [her son] Thomas Southwell was born to Robert Southwell (age 27) and Elizabeth Howard Countess Carrick (age 31).

Around 1596 Thomas Aylesbury 1st Baronet (age 20) was appointed Secretary to [her father] Charles Howard 1st Earl Nottingham (age 60).

On 19th May 1597 [her brother] Charles Howard 2nd Earl Nottingham (age 17) and [her sister-in-law] Charity White were married. He the son of [her father] Charles Howard 1st Earl Nottingham (age 61) and [her mother] Katherine Carey Countess Nottingham (age 47).

On 22nd October 1597 [her father] Charles Howard 1st Earl Nottingham (age 61) was created 1st Earl Nottingham. [her mother] Katherine Carey Countess Nottingham (age 47) by marriage Countess Nottingham.

In 1601 [her brother-in-law] Henry Brooke 11th Baron Cobham (age 36) and [her sister] Frances Howard Countess Kildare were married. She the daughter of [her father] Charles Howard 1st Earl Nottingham (age 65) and [her mother] Katherine Carey Countess Nottingham (age 51). They were third cousin once removed.

On 25th February 1603 [her mother] Katherine Carey Countess Nottingham (age 53) died at Arundel House [Map]. She was buried in Chelsea Old Church on 25th April 1603.

In September 1603 [her father] Charles Howard 1st Earl Nottingham (age 67) and [her step-mother] Margaret Stewart 1st Countess Nottingham (age 12) were married. She by marriage Countess Nottingham. The difference in their ages was 55 years. She the daughter of James "The Bonnie Earl" Stewart 2nd Earl of Moray and Elizabeth Stewart 2nd Countess Moray. They were half fourth cousin twice removed. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

In 1606 [her son-in-law] Robert Dudley (age 31) and [her daughter] Elizabeth Southwell (age 22) were married at Lyon, France [Map]. Bigamous in his case since his second wife Alice Leigh 1st Duchess Dudley (age 28) was alive. She the daughter of Robert Southwell and Elizabeth Howard Countess Carrick (age 41). He the illegitmate son of Robert Dudley 1st Earl of Leicester and [her aunt] Douglas Howard Baroness Sheffield (age 64). They were first cousin once removed.

In May 1614 [her son-in-law] Edward Rodney (age 23) and [her daughter] Frances Southwell were married at Somerset House [Map]. She the daughter of Robert Southwell and Elizabeth Howard Countess Carrick (age 50). They were half fourth cousin twice removed.

On 13th May 1618 [her son-in-law] Greville Verney 15th Baron Latimer 7th Baron Willoughby (age 32) and [her daughter] Catherine Southwell Baroness Latimer and Willoughby Broke (age 25) were married. She the daughter of Robert Southwell and Elizabeth Howard Countess Carrick (age 54). They were sixth cousins.

On 22nd April 1620 [her brother] Charles Howard 2nd Earl Nottingham (age 40) and [her sister-in-law] Mary Cockayne 1st Countess Nottingham were married. She by marriage Countess Nottingham. She the daughter of William Cockayne (age 59) and Mary Morris Countess Dover (age 55). He the son of [her father] Charles Howard 1st Earl Nottingham (age 84) and [her mother] Katherine Carey Countess Nottingham.

On 14th December 1624 [her father] Charles Howard 1st Earl Nottingham (age 88) died. His son [her brother] Charles (age 45) succeeded 2nd Earl Nottingham, 3rd Baron Howard of Effingham. [her sister-in-law] Mary Cockayne 1st Countess Nottingham by marriage Countess Nottingham.

Before 30th June 1627 [her half-brother] Charles Howard 3rd Earl Nottingham (age 16) and [her sister-in-law] Arabella Smith Countess Nottingham were married. He the son of [her father] Charles Howard 1st Earl Nottingham and [her step-mother] Margaret Stewart 1st Countess Nottingham (age 36).

The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." On 3rd October 1642 [her brother] Charles Howard 2nd Earl Nottingham (age 63) died. His half brother [her half-brother] Charles (age 31) succeeded 3rd Earl Nottingham, 4th Baron Howard of Effingham. [her sister-in-law] Arabella Smith Countess Nottingham by marriage Countess Nottingham.

In 1643 [her son] Thomas Southwell (age 47) died.

Before 31st March 1646 Elizabeth Howard Countess Carrick (age 82) died at Greenwich, Kent [Map]. She was buried On 31st March 1646.

Robert Southwell and Elizabeth Howard Countess Carrick were married. She the daughter of Charles Howard 1st Earl Nottingham and Katherine Carey Countess Nottingham.
