The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." On 16th May 1701 [his father] Scrope Howe 1st Viscount Howe (age 52) was created 1st Viscount Howe, 1st Baron Glenawley. [his mother] Juliana Alington Viscountess Howe (age 52) by marriage Viscountess Howe.
On 26th January 1713 [his father] Scrope Howe 1st Viscount Howe (age 64) died. His son Emanuel (age 13) succeeded 2nd Viscount Howe, 2nd Baron Glenawley.
On 8th August 1719 Emanuel Howe 2nd (age 19) and Sophia Von Keilmansegg Viscountess Howe (age 15) were married. She by marriage Viscountess Howe.
After 1st August 1721 [his brother-in-law] Thomas Herbert 8th Earl Pembroke 5th Earl Montgomery (age 65) and [his sister] Mary Howe Countess Pembroke and Montgomery were married. She by marriage Countess Pembroke, Countess Montgomery. He the son of Philip Herbert 5th Earl Pembroke 2nd Earl Montgomery and Catherine Villiers Countess Pembroke and Montgomery. They were fourth cousin twice removed.
In 1722 Emanuel Howe 2nd (age 22) was elected MP Nottinghamshire.
Around 1725 [his son] George Howe 3rd Viscount Howe was born to Emanuel Howe 2nd (age 25) and [his wife] Sophia Von Keilmansegg Viscountess Howe (age 21).

On 8th March 1726 [his son] Richard Howe 1st Earl Howe was born to Emanuel Howe 2nd (age 26) and [his wife] Sophia Von Keilmansegg Viscountess Howe (age 22) at Albermarle Street. He married 10th March 1758 Mary Hartop and had issue.
On 10th August 1729 [his son] William Howe 5th Viscount Howe was born to Emanuel Howe 2nd (age 29) and [his wife] Sophia Von Keilmansegg Viscountess Howe (age 25). He married 1765 Frances Conolly Viscountess Howe.
In 1733 Emanuel Howe 2nd (age 33) was appointed Governor of Barbados.
In 1735 Emanuel Howe 2nd (age 35) died. His son George (age 10) succeeded 3rd Viscount Howe, 3rd Baron Glenawley.
On 13th June 1782 [his former wife] Sophia Von Keilmansegg Viscountess Howe (age 78) died.
