All About History Books

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 15th August 1820 [his father] Henry Charles Sturt (age 25) and [his mother] Charlotte Penelope Brudenell were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Robert Brudenell 6th Earl Cardigan (age 51) and [his grandmother] Penelope Cooke Countess Cardigan (age 50).

On 16th May 1825 Henry Gerard Sturt 1st Baron Alington was born to Henry Charles Sturt (age 29) and Charlotte Penelope Brudenell.

On 10th September 1853 Henry Gerard Sturt 1st Baron Alington (age 28) and Augusta Bingham Baroness Alington (age 21) were married. She the daughter of George Charles Bingham 3rd Earl Lucan (age 53) and Anne Brudenell Countess Lucan (age 44). They were first cousins.

On 20th August 1859 [his son] Humphrey Napier Sturt 2nd Baron Alington was born to Henry Gerard Sturt 1st Baron Alington (age 34) and [his wife] Augusta Bingham Baroness Alington (age 27). Coefficient of inbreeding 6.25%.

Before 13th December 1860 [his brother-in-law] Charles George Bingham 4th Earl Lucan (age 30) and Cecilia Catherine Gordon-Lennox Countess Lucan (age 22) were married. She the daughter of Charles Gordon-Lennox 5th Duke Richmond and Caroline Paget Duchess Richmond (age 64). He the son of [his father-in-law] George Charles Bingham 3rd Earl Lucan (age 60) and [his aunt] Anne Brudenell Countess Lucan (age 51). They were fourth cousin once removed. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 14th April 1866 [his father] Henry Charles Sturt (age 70) died.

On 17th March 1868 [his daughter] Winifred Selina Sturt was born to Henry Gerard Sturt 1st Baron Alington (age 42) and [his wife] Augusta Bingham Baroness Alington (age 36). Coefficient of inbreeding 6.25%.

In 1869 [his daughter] Mildred Cecilia Sturt Lady Montagu was born to Henry Gerard Sturt 1st Baron Alington (age 43) and [his wife] Augusta Bingham Baroness Alington (age 36). Coefficient of inbreeding 6.25%.

The Queen has also been pleased to direct Letters Patent to be passed under the said Great Seal, granting the dignities of a Viscount and Earl of the said United Kingdom to Edward Montagu Stuart Granville, Lord Wharncliffe (age 48), and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the names, styles, and titles of Viscount Carlton, of Carlton, and Earl of Wharncliffe, bdth in the West Riding of the County of York; with remainder, in default of such issue male, to the Honourable Francis Dudley Stuart-Wortley (age 46) (brother of the said Edward Montagu Stuart Granville, Lord Wharncliffe), and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten.

On 25th June 1883 [his son] Humphrey Napier Sturt 2nd Baron Alington (age 23) and [his daughter-in-law] Feodorowna Yorke Baroness Alington (age 19) were married. She the daughter of Charles Philip "Champagne Charlie" Yorke 5th Earl of Hardwicke (age 47) and Sophia Georgiana Robertina Wellesley Countess Hardwicke (age 43).

On 3rd July 1888 [his wife] Augusta Bingham Baroness Alington (age 56) died.

On 17th April 1890 [his son-in-law] Charles Hardinge 1st Baron Penshurt (age 31) and [his daughter] Winifred Selina Sturt (age 22) were married. They were first cousins.

On 10th February 1892 Henry Gerard Sturt 1st Baron Alington (age 66) and Evelyn Henrietta Leigh Baroness Alington were married. She by marriage Baroness Alington.

On 30th April 1892 [his son-in-law] Henry Arthur Cadogan (age 23) and [his daughter] Mildred Cecilia Sturt Lady Montagu (age 23) were married at The Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity with Saint Jude, Sloane Street. He the son of George Cadogan 5th Earl Cadogan (age 51) and Beatrix Jane Craven Countess Cadogan (age 47).

On 17th February 1904 Henry Gerard Sturt 1st Baron Alington (age 78) died. His son [his son] Humphrey (age 44) succeeded 2nd Baron Alington. [his daughter-in-law] Feodorowna Yorke Baroness Alington (age 40) by marriage Baroness Alington.

On 23rd January 1939 [his former wife] Evelyn Henrietta Leigh Baroness Alington died.
