Biography of Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland 1590-1649

On 10th January 1581 [his father] Robert Rich 1st Earl Warwick [aged 21] and [his mother] Penelope Devereux Countess Devonshire [aged 18] were married. She by marriage Baroness Rich of Leez. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Walter Devereux 1st Earl Essex and [his grandmother] Lettice Knollys Countess Essex and Leicester [aged 37].

Before 19th August 1590 Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland was born to Robert Rich 1st Earl Warwick [aged 30] and Penelope Devereux Countess Devonshire [aged 27].

On 19th August 1590 Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland was baptised.

In 1605 [his father] Robert Rich 1st Earl Warwick [aged 45] and [his mother] Penelope Devereux Countess Devonshire [aged 41] were divorced.

In February 1605 [his brother] Robert Rich 2nd Earl Warwick [aged 17] and [his sister-in-law] Frances Hatton Countess Warwick [aged 15] were married. He the son of [his father] Robert Rich 1st Earl Warwick [aged 45] and [his mother] Penelope Devereux Countess Devonshire [aged 42].

On 26th December 1605 [his step-father] Charles Blount 1st Earl Devonshire [aged 42] and [his mother] Penelope Devereux Countess Devonshire [aged 42] were married at Wansted House, Essex during a service conducted by Archbishop William Laud [aged 32] (future). The marriage was regarded as uncanonical and resulted in the disgrace of both parties, who were banished from King James I's court circles. She by marriage Countess Devonshire. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Walter Devereux 1st Earl Essex and [his grandmother] Lettice Knollys Countess Essex and Leicester [aged 62]. They were third cousins.

On 7th July 1607 [his mother] Penelope Devereux Countess Devonshire [aged 44] died.

In 1610 Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 19] was elected MP Leicester.

In 1614 Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 23] was elected MP Leicester.

In 1616 [his father] Robert Rich 1st Earl Warwick [aged 56] and [his step-mother] Frances Wray Countess Warwick were married. She by marriage Baroness Rich of Leez.

In 1616 Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 25] and Isabel Cope Countess Holland were married. He the son of Robert Rich 1st Earl Warwick [aged 56] and Penelope Devereux Countess Devonshire.

On 27th September 1616 [his daughter] Dorothy Rich was born to Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 26] and [his wife] Isabel Cope Countess Holland. She died aged one in 1617.

Around 1617 [his daughter] Frances Rich Baroness Geneville Beaudasert was born to Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 26] and [his wife] Isabel Cope Countess Holland. She married 28th June 1632 her second cousin once removed William Paget 5th Baron Paget Beaudasert, son of William Paget 4th Baron Paget Beaudasert and Lettice Knollys Baroness Geneville Beaudasert, and had issue.

In 1617 Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 26] was appointed Captain of the Yeoman of the Guard.

Around December 1617 [his daughter] Dorothy Rich [aged 1] died.

In 1618 [his father] Robert Rich 1st Earl Warwick [aged 58] was created 1st Earl Warwick. [his step-mother] Frances Wray Countess Warwick by marriage Countess Warwick.

Around 1619 [his son] Robert Rich 5th Earl Warwick 2nd Earl Holland was born to Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 28] and [his wife] Isabel Cope Countess Holland. He married (1) 1641 his fifth cousin once removed Elizabeth Ingram Countess Holland and had issue (2) 1661 his first cousin once removed Anne Montagu Countess Warwick and Holland, daughter of Edward Montagu 2nd Earl Manchester and Anne Rich Viscountess Mandeville, and had issue.

On 20th March 1619 [his father] Robert Rich 1st Earl Warwick [aged 59] died. His son [his brother] Robert [aged 31] succeeded 2nd Earl Warwick, 4th Baron Rich of Leez. [his sister-in-law] Frances Hatton Countess Warwick [aged 29] by marriage Countess Warwick.

He was buried at St Lawrence's Church, Snarford [Map]. Unusual head and shoulder portrait sculpture of deceased full face, with a profile of his wife [his step-mother] Frances Wray Countess Warwick behind, set in a circular medallion. To either side are pelleted Pilasters supporting an entablature with scrolled Cartouche of arms and flanked by heraldic supporters. The whole is painted and gilded and beneath is a panel containing an inscribed poem. Above his Arms implaled with hers. His are quartered 1&4 Rich Arms 2&3 Baldry Arms (his mother), hers quartered 1&4 Wray 2&3 Unknown. the monument is perhaps the work of Epiphanius Evesham. Sculpted by Epiphanius Evesham.

Before 6th October 1623 [his daughter] Isabella Rich was born to Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 33] and [his wife] Isabel Cope Countess Holland. She married her half sixth cousin James Thynne.

In 1624 Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 33] was created 1st Earl Holland. [his wife] Isabel Cope Countess Holland by marriage Countess Holland.

In 1625 Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 34] was appointed 421st Knight of the Garter by King James I of England and Ireland and VI of Scotland [aged 58].

Before 20th January 1626 [his brother] Robert Rich 2nd Earl Warwick [aged 38] and [his sister-in-law] Susan Rowe Countess Warwick [aged 44] were married. She by marriage Countess Warwick. He the son of [his father] Robert Rich 1st Earl Warwick and [his mother] Penelope Devereux Countess Devonshire.

On 7th February 1626 [his illegitimate half-brother] Mountjoy Blount 1st Earl Newport [aged 29] and [his sister-in-law] Anne Boteler Countess Newport and Portland [aged 26] were married. He the illegitmate son of [his step-father] Charles Blount 1st Earl Devonshire and [his mother] Penelope Devereux Countess Devonshire.

In July 1627 [his illegitimate half-brother] Mountjoy Blount 1st Earl Newport [aged 30] was created 1st Earl Newport in the Isle of Wight. [his sister-in-law] Anne Boteler Countess Newport and Portland [aged 27] by marriage Countess Newport in the Isle of Wight.

Around 1628 [his daughter] Susannah Rich Countess Suffolk was born to Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 37] and [his wife] Isabel Cope Countess Holland. She married 1st December 1640 her fifth cousin James Howard 3rd Earl Suffolk, son of Theophilus Howard 2nd Earl Suffolk and Elizabeth Home Countess Suffolk, and had issue.

In 1628 Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 37] was appointed Chancellor Cambridge University.

On 28th June 1632 [his son-in-law] William Paget 5th Baron Paget Beaudasert [aged 22] and Frances Rich Baroness Geneville Beaudasert [aged 15] were married. She by marriage Baroness Paget Beaudasert. She the daughter of Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 41] and Isabel Cope Countess Holland. They were second cousin once removed.

Before 3rd May 1635 [his son] Cope Rich was born to Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 44] and [his wife] Isabel Cope Countess Holland.

Around 1636 [his daughter] Mary Rich was born to Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 45] and [his wife] Isabel Cope Countess Holland. She married 17th December 1657 John Campbell 1st Earl Breadalbaine and Holland and had issue.

On 1st December 1640 [his son-in-law] James Howard 3rd Earl Suffolk [aged 21] and Susannah Rich Countess Suffolk [aged 12] were married. She by marriage Countess Suffolk. She the daughter of Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 50] and Isabel Cope Countess Holland. He the son of Theophilus Howard 2nd Earl Suffolk and Elizabeth Home Countess Suffolk. They were fifth cousins.

In 1641 Robert Rich 5th Earl Warwick 2nd Earl Holland [aged 22] and Elizabeth Ingram Countess Holland [aged 18] were married. He the son of Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 50] and Isabel Cope Countess Holland. They were fifth cousin once removed.

In 1642 Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 51] was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Middlesex.

After 1646 [his brother] Robert Rich 2nd Earl Warwick [aged 58] and [his sister-in-law] Eleanor Wortley Countess Sussex Warwick Manchester were married. She by marriage Countess Warwick. She the daughter of Richard Wortley and Elizabeth Boughton Countess Devonshire. He the son of [his father] Robert Rich 1st Earl Warwick and [his mother] Penelope Devereux Countess Devonshire. They were fifth cousin once removed.

On 9th July 1648 Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 57] entered St Neots with his army of approximately 400 men.

After 10th July 1648 Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 57] was imprisoned at Warwick Castle [Map].

On 27th February 1649 Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland [aged 58] was tried and was condemned as a traitor and sentenced to death.

In August 1655 [his former wife] Isabel Cope Countess Holland died.

Samuel Pepys' Diary. 10th November 1662. Thence by water, and so by land to my Lord Crew's, and dined with him and his brother, I know not his name; where very good discourse; among others, of France's intention to make a patriarch of his own, independent from the Pope, by which he will be able to cope with the Spaniard in all councils, which hitherto he has never done. My Lord Crew told us how he heard my Lord of Holland say that, being Embassador about the match with the Queene-Mother [aged 23] that now is, the King [aged 32] of France [Louis XIII, in 1624.] insisted upon a dispensation from the Pope, which my Lord Holland making a question of, and that he was commanded to yield to nothing to the prejudice of our religion, says the King of France, "You need not fear that, for if the Pope will not dispense with the match, my Bishopp of Paris shall". By and by come in great Mr. Swinfen, the Parliament-man, who, among other discourse of the rise and fall of familys, told us of Bishopp Bridgeman (brother of Sir Orlando [aged 56]) who lately hath bought a seat anciently of the Levers, and then the Ashtons; and so he hath in his great hall window (having repaired and beautified the house) caused four great places to be left for coates of armes. In one, he hath put the Levers, with this motto, "Olim". In another the Ashtons, with this, "Heri". In the next his own, with this, "Hodie". In the fourth nothing but this motto, "Cras nescio cujus". Thence towards my brother's; met with Jack Cole in Fleet Street, and he and I went into his cozen Mary Cole's (whom I never saw since she was married), and drank a pint of wine and much good discourse. I found him a little conceited, but he had good things in him, and a man may know the temper of the City by him, he being of a general conversation, and can tell how matters go; and upon that score I will encourage his acquaintance.
