The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." On 1st November 1254 [her father] King Edward I of England (age 15) and [her mother] Eleanor of Castile Queen Consort England (age 13) were married at Abbey of Santa Maria la Real de Huelgas [Map]. She the daughter of [her grandfather] Ferdinand III King Castile III King Leon and [her grandmother] Joan Dammartin Queen Consort Castile and Leon (age 34). He the son of [her grandfather] King Henry III of England (age 47) and [her grandmother] Eleanor of Provence Queen Consort England (age 31). They were second cousin once removed. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.
In April 1272 Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford was born to [her father] King Edward I of England (age 32) and [her mother] Eleanor of Castile Queen Consort England (age 31) at Acre [Map].
On 16th November 1272 [her grandfather] King Henry III of England (age 65) died at Westminster [Map]. His son [her father] Edward (age 33) succeeded I King of England. [her mother] Eleanor of Castile Queen Consort England (age 31) by marriage Queen Consort England.
On 19th August 1274 [her father] King Edward I of England (age 35) was crowned I King of England at Westminster Abbey [Map]. [her mother] Eleanor of Castile Queen Consort England (age 33) was crowned Queen Consort England.

On 17th June 1282 the army of [her future husband] Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford (age 38) were ambushed by the Welsh at Llandeilo.

On 9th July 1290 [her brother-in-law] John "Peaceful" Reginar II Duke Brabant (age 14) and [her sister] Margaret Plantagenet Duchess Brabant (age 15) were married. She the daughter of [her father] King Edward I of England (age 51) and [her mother] Eleanor of Castile Queen Consort England (age 49). He the son of John Reginar I Duke Brabant (age 37) and Margaret Dampierre Duchess Brabant. They were half third cousin twice removed. He a great x 4 grandson of King Stephen I England.
On 28th November 1290 [her mother] Eleanor of Castile Queen Consort England (age 49) died at Harby Manor. Her viscera were buried at Lincoln Cathedral [Map]. Her heart was buried at Blackfriars, City of London on the 19th December 1290 where her son [her brother] Alfonso Plantagenet had been buried eight years beforew.
Her corpse was taken from Harby, Nottinghamshire [Map] to Westminster Abbey [Map]. At each of the locations at which her body rested overnight [her father] King Edward I of England (age 51) commissioned the building of an Eleanor Cross. Three remain at Geddington, Northamptonshire [Map], Hardingstone, Northamptonshire and Waltham Abbey, Essex [Map].
Arounnd 10th May 1291 [her son] Gilbert de Clare 8th Earl Gloucester 7th Earl Hertford was born to [her husband] Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford (age 47) and Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford (age 19). He a grandson of King Edward I of England. He married his sixth cousin Matilda Burgh Countess Gloucester and Hertford, daughter of Richard "Red Earl" Burgh 2nd Earl of Ulster and Margaret Burgh Countess Ulster.
On 3rd October 1292 [her daughter] Eleanor Clare Baroness Zouche Mortimer was born to [her husband] Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford (age 49) and Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford (age 20) at Caerphilly Castle [Map]. She a granddaughter of King Edward I of England. On 16th September 1295 [her daughter] Elizabeth Clare Lady Verdun was born to [her husband] Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford (age 52) and Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford (age 23). She a granddaughter of King Edward I of England. She married (1) her sixth cousin John Burgh, son of Richard "Red Earl" Burgh 2nd Earl of Ulster and Margaret Burgh Countess Ulster, and had issue (2) 4th February 1316 her third cousin Theobald Verdun 2nd Lord Verdun and had issue (3) before 3rd May 1317 Roger Damory 1st Baron Damory and had issue.
Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough. In the same year died1 [her husband] Gilbert, Earl of Gloucester (age 52), who had taken Joanna (age 23), the daughter of King Edward, as his wife, and left behind a very young boy, also named Gilbert, as his tender heir, born of the same Joanna. After his death, Joanna, against the will of her father the king, within that same year, married a simple knight named [her future husband] Ralph de Monthermer (age 25), a native of the bishopric of Durham, who had served as a knight under her former husband, the earl. Later, through his own bravery and skill, he rose to great prominence and was called Earl of Gloucester.
Eodem anno obiit Gilbertus comes Gloucestriæ, qui Johannam, filiam regis Edwardi, duxerat in uxorem, et puerum parvulum, Gilbertum nomine, reliquit hæredem tenerum, ex eadem Johanna procreatum. Post mortem cujus ipsa Johanna, contra voluntatem patris sui regis, infra eundem annum, simplicem sibi militem, nomine Radulphum de Montermere, de episcopatu Dunolmensi oriundum, qui viro suo comiti militaverat, sibi matrimonio copulavit; qui in posterum, per strenuitatem ipsius et industriam, in magnum crevit virum, comesque Gloucestriæ appellatus est.
Note 1. Gilbert, Earl of Gloucester died on 7th December 1295 at Monmouth Castle [Map]. He buried at Tewkesbury Abbey [Map]. He was succeeded by his four year old son [her son] Gilbert de Clare 8th Earl Gloucester 7th Earl Hertford (age 4).
On 7th December 1295 [her husband] Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford (age 52) died at Monmouth Castle [Map]. He buried at Tewkesbury Abbey [Map]. His son [her son] Gilbert (age 4) succeeded 8th Earl Gloucester, 7th Earl Hertford, 8th Lord Clare, 4th Lord Glamorgan.
In January 1297 Ralph Monthermer 1st Earl of Gloucester and Hertford (age 27) and Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford (age 24) were married in secret greatly offending her father King Edward I of England (age 57) who had been planning to marry her to Amadeus V "Great" Savoy (age 47) in March. Ralph Monthermer 1st Earl of Gloucester and Hertford was imprisoned at Bristol Castle, Gloucestershire [Map]; he was released in August 1297. She the daughter of King Edward I of England and Eleanor of Castile Queen Consort England.
On 8th January 1297 [her brother-in-law] John Gerulfing I Count Holland (age 13) and [her sister] Princess Elizabeth of Rhuddlan Countess Essex, Hereford and Holland (age 14) were married at Ipswich, Suffolk [Map]. She by marriage Countess Holland. The wedding was attended by her sister [her sister] Margaret Plantagenet Duchess Brabant (age 21), her father [her father] King Edward I (age 57), her brother [her brother] Edward (age 12) and her future second husband [her future brother-in-law] Humphrey Bohun 4th Earl Hereford 3rd Earl Essex (age 21). She the daughter of King Edward I of England and [her mother] Eleanor of Castile Queen Consort England. He the son of Floris Gerulfing V Count Holland and Beatrix Dampierre. They were half third cousin twice removed. He a great x 4 grandson of King Stephen I England.
In August 1297 [her husband] Ralph Monthermer 1st Earl of Gloucester and Hertford (age 27) was created 1st Earl Gloucester, 1st Earl Hertford. There is some uncertainty as to whether these creations existed, or were created for life only, since they do appear to have been inherited, or whether there is confusion around his having been married to Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford (age 25), the widow of the seventh Earl of the first creation [her former husband] Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford.
In October 1297 [her daughter] Mary Monthermer was born to [her husband] Ralph Monthermer 1st Earl of Gloucester and Hertford (age 27) and Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford (age 25). She a granddaughter of King Edward I of England.
On 22nd July 1298 [her father] King Edward I of England (age 59) defeated the Scottish army led by William Wallace during the 22nd July 1298 Battle of Falkirk at Falkirk [Map] using archers to firstly attack the Scottish shiltrons with the heavy cavalry with infantry completing the defeat.
John de Graham (age 31) and John Stewart of Bonkyll (age 52) were killed.

On 25th September 1300 Edmund "Almain" 2nd Earl Cornwall (age 50) died. Earl Cornwall extinct. He was buried, heart and flesh, at Ashridge, Hertfordshire [Map]. His bones were interred at Hailes Abbey [Map] during a service attended by [her father] King Edward I of England (age 61).
On 7th February 1301 [her brother] King Edward II of England (age 16) was created Prince of Wales by his father [her father] King Edward I of England (age 61); the first English heir to receive the title. He was created 1st Earl Chester the same day.
On 4th October 1301 [her son] Thomas Monthermer 2nd Baron Monthermer was born to [her husband] Ralph Monthermer 1st Earl of Gloucester and Hertford (age 31) and Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford (age 29) at Ham Stoke, Wiltshire. He a grandson of King Edward I of England. He married before 1340 Margaret Brewes Baroness Monthermer, daughter of Peter Brewes Count Flanders, and had issue.

Before 12th December 1306 Roger Bigod 5th Earl Norfolk (age 61) died. Earl Norfolk extinct. In 1302 Roger Bigod 5th Earl Norfolk had surrendered his Earldom to [her father] King Edward I (age 67) and was recreated Earl Norfolk with the remainder "to the heirs of his body" effectively disinheriting his brother John Bigod. Its not clear why he did so.
On 23rd April 1307 Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford (age 35) died at Clare, Suffolk [Map].
On 2nd November 1307 [her son-in-law] Piers Gaveston 1st Earl Cornwall (age 23) and [her daughter] Margaret Clare Countess Gloucester were married. Arranged by [her brother] King Edward II of England (age 23). Margaret Clare Countess Gloucester grand-daughter of Edward I through his daughter Joan and, as such, significantly higher than Gaveston in the nobility. She the daughter of [her former husband] Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford and Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford.

[2nd November 1307] So much so that, in order to strengthen Peter's faction and surround him with loyal friends, the lord king gave him in marriage the daughter of his sister, who was herself the daughter of the late Gilbert, Earl of Gloucester. Truly, this marriage alliance greatly advanced his cause; for it powerfully increased his favour among friends and helped restrain the hatred of the barons.

Around 1313 [her former husband] Ralph Monthermer 1st Earl of Gloucester and Hertford (age 43) and Isabel Despencer Baroness Hastings and Bergavenny were married. She the daughter of Hugh "Elder" Despencer 1st Earl Winchester (age 51) and Isabella Beauchamp.
In 1324 [her niece] Eleanor of Woodstock Plantagenet (age 5) was placed into the care of her cousin [her daughter] Eleanor Clare Baroness Zouche Mortimer (age 31). She was subsequently placed into the care of [her former husband] Ralph Monthermer 1st Earl of Gloucester and Hertford (age 54) (he had formerly been married to her aunt Joan of Acre and Isabel Despencer Baroness Hastings and Bergavenny with her younger sister [her niece] Joan of the Tower (age 2) at Pleshey Castle [Map].
On 5th April 1325 [her former husband] Ralph Monthermer 1st Earl of Gloucester and Hertford (age 55) died. Earl Gloucester, Earl Hertford extinct. His son [her son] Thomas (age 23) succeeded 2nd Baron Monthermer.
[her daughter] Margaret Clare Countess Gloucester was born to Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford and Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford. She a granddaughter of King Edward I of England. She married (1) 2nd November 1307 Piers Gaveston 1st Earl Cornwall (2) 28th April 1317 her third cousin once removed Hugh Audley 1st Earl Gloucester, son of Hugh Audley 1st Baron Audley of Stratton Audley and Iseult Mortimer, and had issue.
