The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 25th September 1625 [his father] Thomas Lucas (age 66) died.
On 17th December 1628 John Lucas 1st Baron Lucas Shenfield (age 22) and Mary Neville (age 17) were married.
In 1633 John Lucas 1st Baron Lucas Shenfield (age 26) was elected Fellow of the Royal Society.
Around 1644 [his daughter] Mary Lucas Countess Kent was born to John Lucas 1st Baron Lucas Shenfield (age 37) and [his wife] Mary Neville (age 33).
On 3rd January 1645 King Charles I (age 44) rewarded his supporters with Baronies ...
John Brooke 1st Baron Cobham (age 69) was created 1st Baron Cobham. Frances Bampfield Baroness Cobham by marriage Baroness Cobham.
John Lucas 1st Baron Lucas Shenfield (age 38) was created 1st Baron Lucas of Shenfield with special remainder to the male issue of his brother [his brother] Thomas Lucas (age 66).
On 14th June 1645 Maurice Palatinate Simmern (age 24) fought at Naseby, Northamptonshire [Map] during the Battle of Naseby for the Royalist army.
John Lucas 1st Baron Lucas Shenfield (age 38) fought for the King.
Colonel John Russell (age 25) was wounded.
On 22nd August 1660 [his wife] Mary Neville (age 49) died.
Between 2nd March 1662 and 1671 [his son-in-law] Anthony Grey 11th Earl Kent (age 16) and [his daughter] Mary Lucas Countess Kent (age 18) were married. She by marriage Countess Kent. He the son of Henry Grey 10th Earl Kent and Amabel Benn Countess Kent (age 54).
John Evelyn's Diary. 25th April 1667. Visited again the Duke of Newcastle (age 74), with whom I had been acquainted long before in France, where the [his sister] Duchess (age 44) had obligation to my wife's (age 32) mother for her marriage there; she was sister to Lord Lucas (age 60), and maid of honor then to the Queen-Mother (age 57); married in our chapel at Paris. My wife being with me, the Duke and Duchess both would needs bring her to the very Court.
On 2nd July 1671 John Lucas 1st Baron Lucas Shenfield (age 64) died. His nephew Charles (age 40) succeeded 2nd Baron Lucas of Shenfield although technically illegitimate his parents had married after his birth.
