Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke

Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.

In February 1733 [her father] Stephen Poyntz [aged 47] and [her mother] Anna Maria Mordaunt were married.

On 8th May 1737 Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer was born to [her father] Stephen Poyntz [aged 51] and [her mother] Anna Maria Mordaunt at St James's Palace [Map].

On 17th December 1750 [her father] Stephen Poyntz [aged 65] died at Midgham, Berkshire.

On 20th December 1755 John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 21] and Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 18] were married at Althorp House, Northamptonshire [Map]. He the son of John Spencer and Georgiana Caroline Carteret [aged 39].

On 7th June 1757 [her daughter] Georgiana Spencer Duchess Devonshire was born to [her husband] John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 22] and Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 20] at Althorp House, Northamptonshire [Map]. She married 7th June 1774 her fourth cousin William Cavendish 5th Duke Devonshire, son of William Cavendish 4th Duke Devonshire and Charlotte Elizabeth Boyle Marchioness Hartington, and had issue.

On 1st September 1758 [her son] George John Spencer 2nd Earl Spencer was born to [her husband] John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 23] and Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 21]. He married 6th March 1781 Lavinia Bingham Countess Spencer, daughter of Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan and Margaret Smith Countess Lucan, and had issue.

On 3rd April 1761 [her husband] John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 26] was created 1st Viscount Spencer, 1st Baron Spencer Althorp. Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 23] by marriage Viscountess Spencer, 1st Baroness Spencer Althorp.

Anne Boleyn. Her Life as told by Lancelot de Carle's 1536 Letter.

In 1536, two weeks after the execution of Anne Boleyn, her brother George and four others, Lancelot du Carle, wrote an extraordinary letter that described Anne's life, and her trial and execution, to which he was a witness. This book presents a new translation of that letter, with additional material from other contemporary sources such as Letters, Hall's and Wriothesley's Chronicles, the pamphlets of Wynkyn the Worde, the Memorial of George Constantyne, the Portuguese Letter and the Baga de Secrets, all of which are provided in Appendices.

She married 27th November 1780 her fifth cousin Frederick Ponsonby 3rd Earl Bessborough, son of William Ponsonby 2nd Earl Bessborough and Caroline Cavendish Countess Bessborough, and had issue.

In 1765 [her daughter] Charlotte Spencer was born to [her husband] John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 30] and Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 27]. She died aged one in 1766.

On 1st November 1765 [her husband] John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 30] was created 1st Earl Spencer, 1st Viscount Althorp. Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 28] by marriage Countess Spencer, 1st Viscountess Althorp.

In 1766 [her daughter] Charlotte Spencer [aged 1] died.

In 1769 [her daughter] Louisa Spencer died.

In 1769 [her daughter] Louisa Spencer was born to [her husband] John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 34] and Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 31]. She died aged less than one years old.

On 14th November 1771 [her mother] Anna Maria Mordaunt died.

On 7th June 1774 [her son-in-law] William Cavendish 5th Duke Devonshire [aged 26] and Georgiana Spencer Duchess Devonshire [aged 17] were married at St Mary's Church, Wimbledon. It was her 17th birthday. She by marriage Duchess Devonshire. She the daughter of John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 39] and Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 37]. He the son of William Cavendish 4th Duke Devonshire and Charlotte Elizabeth Boyle Marchioness Hartington. They were fourth cousins.

On 27th November 1780 [her son-in-law] Frederick Ponsonby 3rd Earl Bessborough [aged 22] and Henrietta Frances Spencer Countess Bessborough [aged 19] were married. She by marriage Countess Bessborough. She the daughter of John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 45] and Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 43]. He the son of William Ponsonby 2nd Earl Bessborough [aged 76] and Caroline Cavendish Countess Bessborough. They were fifth cousins.

Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

On 31st October 1783 [her husband] John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 48] died at Bath, Somerset [Map]. He was buried at St Mary the Virgin Church, Great Brington, Northamptonshire. His son George [aged 25] succeeded 2nd Earl Spencer, 2nd Viscount Althorp, 2nd Viscount Spencer, 2nd Baron Spencer Althorp. Lavinia Bingham Countess Spencer [aged 21] by marriage Countess Spencer.

On 30th March 1806 Georgiana Spencer Duchess Devonshire [aged 48] died at Devonshire House [Map]. She was buried at Derby Cathedral [Map]. Her husband William Cavendish 5th Duke Devonshire [aged 58], her mother Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 68], her sister Henrietta Frances Spencer Countess Bessborough [aged 44] and her eight months pregnant daughter Georgiana Cavendish Countess Carlisle [aged 22] were present, as was Elizabeth Christiana Hervey Duchess Devonshire [aged 48], her husband's mistress and future wife.

On 18th March 1814 Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 76] died.
