Biography of Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath 1734-1796

On 6th December 1726 [his father] Thomas Thynne 2nd Viscount Weymouth [aged 16] and Elizabeth Sackville Viscountess Weymouth [aged 15] were married at Whitehall Palace [Map]. She by marriage Viscountess Weymouth. She the daughter of Lionel Cranfield Sackville 1st Duke Dorset [aged 38] and Elizabeth Colyear Duchess Dorset [aged 37]. They were fifth cousins.

On 3rd July 1733 [his father] Thomas Thynne 2nd Viscount Weymouth [aged 23] and [his mother] Louisa Carteret Viscountess Weymouth [aged 21] were married. She by marriage Viscountess Weymouth. She the daughter of [his grandfather] John Carteret 2nd Earl Granville [aged 43] and [his grandmother] Frances Worsley Countess Granville [aged 40]. They were second cousin once removed.

On 13th September 1734 Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath was born to [his father] Thomas Thynne 2nd Viscount Weymouth [aged 24] and [his mother] Louisa Carteret Viscountess Weymouth [aged 22].

On 25th December 1736 [his mother] Louisa Carteret Viscountess Weymouth [aged 24] died.

In January 1751 [his father] Thomas Thynne 2nd Viscount Weymouth [aged 40] died. His son Thomas [aged 16] succeeded 3rd Viscount Weymouth, 3rd Baron Thynne of Warminster in Wiltshire, 4th Baronet Thynne of Kempsford in Gloucestershire.

In 1759 Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath [aged 24] and Elizabeth Bentinck Marchioness Bath [aged 23] were married. She by marriage Viscountess Weymouth. She the daughter of William Bentinck 2nd Duke Portland [aged 49] and Margaret Cavendish Harley 2nd Duchess Portland [aged 43]. They were third cousins.

On 25th March 1760 [his daughter] Louisa Thynne Countess Aylesford was born to Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath [aged 25] and [his wife] Elizabeth Bentinck Marchioness Bath [aged 24]. She married 18th November 1781 Heneage Finch 4th Earl Aylesford, son of Heneage Finch 3rd Earl Aylesford and Charlotte Seymour Countess Aylesford, and had issue.

On 1st May 1762 [his father-in-law] William Bentinck 2nd Duke Portland [aged 53] died. His son [his brother-in-law] William [aged 24] succeeded 3rd Duke Portland, 4th Earl of Portland.

On 17th November 1762 [his daughter] Henrietta Thynne was born to Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath [aged 28] and [his wife] Elizabeth Bentinck Marchioness Bath [aged 27]. She married 2nd May 1799 Philip Stanhope 5th Earl Chesterfield and had issue.

On 28th May 1763 George Grey 5th Earl Stamford 1st Earl Warrington [aged 25] and [his sister-in-law] Henrietta Bentinck Countess Stamford and Warrington [aged 26] were married. She by marriage Countess Stamford. She the daughter of [his father-in-law] William Bentinck 2nd Duke Portland and [his mother-in-law] Margaret Cavendish Harley 2nd Duchess Portland [aged 48]. He the son of Henry Grey 4th Earl Stamford [aged 47] and Mary Booth Countess Stamford [aged 59].

On 19th December 1763 [his daughter] Sophia Thynne was born to Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath [aged 29] and [his wife] Elizabeth Bentinck Marchioness Bath [aged 28]. She married 28th August 1784 her fourth cousin twice removed George Ashburnham 3rd Earl Ashburnham, son of John Ashburnham 2nd Earl Ashburnham and Elizabeth Crowley Countess Ashburham, and had issue.

In 1765 Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath [aged 30] was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.

On 23rd January 1765 [his son] Thomas Thynne 2nd Marquess of Bath was born to Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath [aged 30] and [his wife] Elizabeth Bentinck Marchioness Bath [aged 29]. He married 14th April 1794 his fifth cousin Isabella Elizabeth Byng Marchioness Bath, daughter of George Byng 4th Viscount Torrington and Lucy Boyle Viscountess Torrington, and had issue.

On 8th November 1766 [his brother-in-law] William Cavendish-Bentinck 3rd Duke Portland [aged 28] and Dorothy Cavendish 3rd Duchess Portland [aged 16] were married. She by marriage Duchess Portland. She the daughter of William Cavendish 4th Duke Devonshire and Charlotte Elizabeth Boyle Marchioness Hartington. He the son of [his father-in-law] William Bentinck 2nd Duke Portland and [his mother-in-law] Margaret Cavendish Harley 2nd Duchess Portland [aged 51]. They were half fourth cousins.

In January 1768 Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath [aged 33] was appointed Secretary of State for the Northern Department.

On 23rd January 1770 [his son] George Thynne 2nd Baron Carteret was born to Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath [aged 35] and [his wife] Elizabeth Bentinck Marchioness Bath [aged 34]. He married 9th May 1797 Harriet Courtenay Baroness Carteret, daughter of William Courtenay 8th Earl Devon and Frances Clack Countess Devon.

On 28th December 1772 [his son] John Thynne 3rd Baron Carteret was born to Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath [aged 38] and [his wife] Elizabeth Bentinck Marchioness Bath [aged 37].

In 1778 Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath [aged 43] was appointed 595th Knight of the Garter by King George III of Great Britain and Ireland [aged 39].

In 1781 Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath [aged 46] was appointed High Steward of Sutton Coldfield.

On 18th November 1781 [his son-in-law] Heneage Finch 4th Earl Aylesford [aged 30] and Louisa Thynne Countess Aylesford [aged 21] were married. She by marriage Countess Aylesford. She the daughter of Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath [aged 47] and Elizabeth Bentinck Marchioness Bath [aged 46]. He the son of Heneage Finch 3rd Earl Aylesford and Charlotte Seymour Countess Aylesford [aged 51].

In 1784 Henry Carteret 1st Baron Carteret [aged 49] was created 1st Baron Carteret with a special remainder to the younger sons of his brother, the Marquess of Bath.

On 28th August 1784 [his son-in-law] George Ashburnham 3rd Earl Ashburnham [aged 23] and Sophia Thynne [aged 20] were married. She the daughter of Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath [aged 49] and Elizabeth Bentinck Marchioness Bath [aged 49]. He the son of John Ashburnham 2nd Earl Ashburnham [aged 59] and Elizabeth Crowley Countess Ashburham. They were fourth cousin twice removed.

The King has been pleased to grant the Dignity of an Earl of this Kingdom of Great Britain to the Right Honourable George Viscount Mount-Edgcumbe and Valletort [aged 69], and the Heirs Male of liis Body lawfully begotten, by the Name, Stile and Title of Earl of Mount-Edgcumbe. The King has been pleased to grant the Dignities of Viscount and Earl of the Kingdom of Great Britain to the Right Honourable Hugh Lord Fortescue [aged 36], and the Heirs Male of his Body lawfully begotten, by the Name, Stile and Title of 1stViscount Ebrington, of Ebrington in the County of Gloucester, and Earl Fortescue. On 9th April 1791 [his daughter] Sophia Thynne [aged 27] died.

On 14th April 1794 Thomas Thynne 2nd Marquess of Bath [aged 29] and Isabella Elizabeth Byng Marchioness Bath [aged 20] were married. He the son of Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath [aged 59] and Elizabeth Bentinck Marchioness Bath [aged 58]. They were fifth cousins.

On 19th November 1796 Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath [aged 62] died. His son Thomas [aged 31] succeeded 2nd Marquess of Bath, 4th Viscount Weymouth, 4th Baron Thynne of Warminster in Wiltshire, 5th Baronet Thynne of Kempsford in Gloucestershire. Isabella Elizabeth Byng Marchioness Bath [aged 23] by marriage Marchioness of Bath.

Elizabeth Bentinck Marchioness Bath: On 27th June 1735 she was born to William Bentinck 2nd Duke Portland and Margaret Cavendish Harley 2nd Duchess Portland at Welbeck Abbey, Nottinghamshire [Map]. In 1759 Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath and she were married. She by marriage Viscountess Weymouth. She the daughter of William Bentinck 2nd Duke Portland and Margaret Cavendish Harley 2nd Duchess Portland. They were third cousins.
