Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

In 1856 [his father] Wentworth Beaumont 1st Baron Allendale [aged 26] and [his mother] Margaret Anne Burgh [aged 25] were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Ulick Burgh 1st Marquess Clanricarde [aged 53] and [his grandmother] Harriet Canning Marchioness Clanricarde [aged 51].

On 2nd December 1860 Wentworth Canning Blackett Beaumont 1st Viscount Allendale was born to Wentworth Beaumont 1st Baron Allendale [aged 31] and Margaret Anne Burgh [aged 29].

On 31st March 1888 [his mother] Margaret Anne Burgh [aged 57] died.

On 12th November 1889 Wentworth Canning Blackett Beaumont 1st Viscount Allendale [aged 28] and Alexandrina Louise Maud Vane-Tempest Viscountess Allendale [aged 26] were married. She the daughter of George Henry Vane-Tempest 5th Marquess Londonderry and Mary Cornelia Edwards Marchioness Londonderry [aged 60].

On 6th August 1890 [his son] Wentworth Henry Canning Beaumont 2nd Viscount Allendale was born to Wentworth Canning Blackett Beaumont 1st Viscount Allendale [aged 29] and [his wife] Alexandrina Louise Maud Vane-Tempest Viscountess Allendale [aged 26]. He married 20th July 1921 Violet Lucy Emily Seely Viscountess Allendale, daughter of Charles Hilton Seely 2nd Baronet, and had issue.

On 17th March 1891 [his father] Wentworth Beaumont 1st Baron Allendale [aged 61] and [his step-mother] Edith Althea Hamilton Baroness Allendale [aged 42] were married at St Paul's Church, Knightsbridge. No issue.

On 13th November 1892 [his daughter] Margaret Helen Beaumont Countess Fortescue was born to Wentworth Canning Blackett Beaumont 1st Viscount Allendale [aged 31] and [his wife] Alexandrina Louise Maud Vane-Tempest Viscountess Allendale [aged 29]. She married 8th February 1917 Hugh William Fortescue 5th Earl Fortescue, son of Hugh Fortescue 4th Earl Fortescue and Emily Ormsby-Gore Countess Fortescue, and had issue.

The Times. 2nd February 1905. The funeral of [his brother-in-law] Lord Henry Vane-Tempest [deceased] took place yesterday in the family vault in St. Peter's [Map], Montgomeryshire. The Bishop of Bangor [aged 59], assisted by the Rev J. Williams, rector of the parish, and the Rev. S. J. Evans, officiated. The principal mourmers were the Marquis [aged 52] and Marchioness of Londonderry [aged 48] (brother and sister-in-law), Lord Herbert Vane-Tempest [aged 42] (brother), and Mr. Beaumont [aged 44], M.P., and Lady Aline Beaumont [aged 41] (brother-in-law and sister). Continues.

On 13th February 1907 [his father] Wentworth Beaumont 1st Baron Allendale [aged 77] died. His son Wentworth [aged 46] succeeded 2nd Baron Allendale of Allendale and Hexham in Northumberland.

On 8th February 1915 [his brother-in-law] Charles Stewart Vane-Tempest-Stewart 6th Marquess Londonderry [aged 62] died. His son Charles [aged 36] succeeded 7th Marquess Londonderry. Memorial at St Mary's Church, Long Newton [Map].

On 8th February 1917 [his son-in-law] Hugh William Fortescue 5th Earl Fortescue [aged 28] and [his daughter] Margaret Helen Beaumont Countess Fortescue [aged 24] were married. He the son of Hugh Fortescue 4th Earl Fortescue [aged 62] and Emily Ormsby-Gore Countess Fortescue [aged 57].

On 20th July 1921 [his son] Wentworth Henry Canning Beaumont 2nd Viscount Allendale [aged 30] and [his daughter-in-law] Violet Lucy Emily Seely Viscountess Allendale [aged 24] were married at St Martin in the Fields Church [Map].

On 12th December 1923 Wentworth Canning Blackett Beaumont 1st Viscount Allendale [aged 63] died. His son Wentworth [aged 33] succeeded 2nd Viscount Allendale of Allendale and Hexham in Northumberland, 3rd Baron Allendale of Allendale and Hexham in Northumberland. Violet Lucy Emily Seely Viscountess Allendale [aged 26] by marriage Viscountess Allendale of Allendale and Hexham in Northumberland.

On 31st July 1945 [his former wife] Alexandrina Louise Maud Vane-Tempest Viscountess Allendale [aged 81] died.
