Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

On 18th March 1718 William Cowper 1st Earl Cowper [aged 53] was created 1st Earl Cowper for having suppressed the Jacobite rebellion of 1715. Mary Clavering Countess Cowper [aged 33] by marriage Countess Cowper.

On 10th October 1723 William Cowper 1st Earl Cowper [aged 58] died. His son William [aged 14] succeeded 2nd Earl Cowper, 2nd Baron Cowper of Wingham in Kent, 4th Baronet Cowper of Ratling Court in Kent.

On 27th September 1732 William Clavering-Cowper 2nd Earl Cowper [aged 23] and Henrietta Nassau 2nd Countess Cowper [aged 19] were married. She by marriage Countess Cowper. She the daughter of Henry Nassau 1st Earl Grantham [aged 59] and Henrietta Butler Countess Grantham. He the son of William Cowper 1st Earl Cowper and Mary Clavering Countess Cowper.

In 1750 William Clavering-Cowper 2nd Earl Cowper [aged 40] and Georgiana Caroline Carteret [aged 33]. Georgiana Caroline Carteret by marriage Countess Cowper.

On 18th September 1764 William Clavering-Cowper 2nd Earl Cowper [aged 55] died. His son George [aged 26] succeeded 3rd Earl Cowper, 3rd Baron Cowper of Wingham in Kent, 5th Baronet Cowper of Ratling Court in Kent. Hannah Anna Gore 3rd Countess Cowper by marriage Countess Cowper.

On 22nd December 1789 George Nassau Clavering-Cowper 3rd Earl Cowper [aged 51] died. His son George [aged 13] succeeded 4th Earl Cowper, 4th Baron Cowper of Wingham in Kent, 6th Baronet Cowper of Ratling Court in Kent.

On 12th February 1799 George Augustus Clavering-Cowper 4th Earl Cowper [aged 22] died. His brother Peter [aged 20] succeeded 5th Earl Cowper.

On 20th July 1805 Peter Nassau Clavering-Cowper 5th Earl Cowper [aged 27] and Emily Lamb Countess Cowper [aged 18] were married. She by marriage Countess Cowper. He the son of George Nassau Clavering-Cowper 3rd Earl Cowper and Hannah Anna Gore 3rd Countess Cowper.

In 1833 George Augustus Frederick Cowper 6th Earl Cowper [aged 26] and Ann Florence Robinson Countess Cowper [aged 27] were married. She by marriage Countess Cowper. She the daughter of Thomas de Grey 2nd Earl de Grey [aged 51] and Henrietta Cole Countess de Grey [aged 48]. He the son of Peter Nassau Clavering-Cowper 5th Earl Cowper [aged 54] and Emily Lamb Countess Cowper [aged 45].

On 21st June 1837 Peter Nassau Clavering-Cowper 5th Earl Cowper [aged 59] died. His son George [aged 30] succeeded 6th Earl Cowper, 5th Baron Cowper of Wingham in Kent, 7th Baronet Cowper of Ratling Court in Kent.

On 15th April 1856 George Augustus Frederick Cowper 6th Earl Cowper [aged 49] died. His son Francis [aged 21] succeeded 7th Earl Cowper, 6th Baron Cowper of Wingham in Kent, 8th Baronet Cowper of Ratling Court in Kent.

Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans

Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

She the daughter of William Compton 4th Marquess Northampton [aged 52]. He the son of George Augustus Frederick Cowper 6th Earl Cowper and Ann Florence Robinson Countess Cowper [aged 64].

On 18th July 1905 Francis Thomas Cowper 7th Earl Cowper [aged 71] died. Earl Cowper, Baron Cowper of Wingham in Kent and Baronet Cowper of Ratling Court in Kent extinct. His nephew Auberon [aged 29] succeeded 9th Baron Lucas of Crudwell.
