Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough
A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

In 1225 Alphonse Capet II (age 4) was appointed Count Poitou.
On 8th November 1226 [his father] King Louis VIII of France (age 39) died. His son [his brother] Louis (age 12) succeeded IX King France: Capet.
On 27th May 1234 [his brother] King Louis IX of France (age 20) and [his sister-in-law] Margaret Provence Queen Consort France (age 13) were married. She by marriage Queen Consort of France. She the daughter of Raymond IV Count Provence (age 36) and Beatrice Savoy Countess Provence (age 36). He the son of [his father] King Louis VIII of France and [his mother] Blanche Ivrea Queen Consort France (age 46). They were half third cousins. He a great grandson of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.
In 1237 Alphonse Capet II (age 16) and Joan Rouerge (age 17) were married. She the daughter of Raymond Rouerge VII Count Toulose (age 39) and Sancha Barcelona Countess Toulouse. He the son of King Louis VIII of France and Blanche Ivrea Queen Consort France (age 48). They were second cousins. He a great grandson of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England. She a great granddaughter of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.
On 21st July 1242 the forces of King Henry III of England (age 34) and Hugh XI of Lusignan VI Count of La Marche II Count Angoulême (age 21) fought against the forces of at [his brother] King Louis IX of France (age 28) and his brother Alphonse Capet II (age 21) at Taillebourg [Map] during the Battle of Taillebourg. The battle was a decisive victory for the French. Henry thereafter signed a five-year truce with the French.

On 8th May 1250 [his brother] King Louis IX of France (age 36) and his two brothers Alphonse Capet II (age 29) and [his brother] King Charles Capet of Sicily (age 23) with 12,000 fellow prisoners were allowed to leave for Acre [Map] after paying a ransom of 400,000 dinars.
On 10th August 1250 Alphonse Capet II (age 29) sailed for home.
