Biography of Edward Augustus Hanover 1st Duke Kent and Strathearn 1767-1820

On 8th September 1761 [his father] King George III of Great Britain and Ireland (age 23) and [his mother] Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England (age 17) were married at Chapel Royal, St James's Palace. She by marriage Queen Consort England. He the son of [his grandfather] Frederick Louis Hanover Prince of Wales and [his grandmother] Augusta Saxe Coburg Altenburg (age 41). They were third cousins. He a grandson of King George II of Great Britain and Ireland.

On 2nd August 1767 Edward Augustus Hanover 1st Duke Kent and Strathearn was born to [his father] King George III of Great Britain and Ireland (age 29) and [his mother] Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England (age 23) at Buckingham House [Map].

On 15th December 1785 [his brother] King George IV of Great Britain and Ireland (age 23) and [his sister-in-law] Maria Anne Smythe aka "Mrs Fitzherbert" (age 29) were married secretly in the drawing room of her house in Park Street, London; her third marriage, his first. The marriage was invalid under English civil law because his father had not given his consent. Her uncle Henry Errington and her brother John Smythe were witnesses. The ceremony was performed by one of the prince's Chaplains in Ordinary, the Reverend Robert Burt, whose debts of £500 were paid by the prince to release him from Fleet Prison [Map] to preside at the ceremony.. He the son of [his father] King George III of Great Britain and Ireland (age 47) and [his mother] Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England (age 41).

In 1789 [his half-brother] King William IV of the United Kingdom (age 23) was created 1st Duke Clarence and St Andrews.

In 1790 George Harcourt 2nd Earl Harcourt (age 53) was appointed Master of the Horse to [his mother] Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England (age 45) which position he held until his death in 1809.

On 4th April 1793 [his brother] Prince Augustus Frederick Hanover 1st Duke Sussex (age 20) and [his sister-in-law] Augusta Murray Duchess Sussex (age 25) were married at Rome, Italy [Map] in secret contrary to the Royal Marriages Act which required him to seek permission before marrying. She the daughter of John Murray 4th Earl Dunmore (age 63) and Charlotte Stewart Countess Dunmore (age 63). He the son of [his father] King George III of Great Britain and Ireland (age 54) and [his mother] Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England (age 48).

In August 1794 [his brother] Prince Augustus Frederick Hanover 1st Duke Sussex (age 21) and [his sister-in-law] Augusta Murray Duchess Sussex (age 26) marriage annulled by the Court of Arches which deemed the marriage contrary to the Royal Marriages Act. The couple continued to live together until 1801 when they separated. She received a grant of £4000 each year and custody of their children.

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

On 24th April 1799 Edward Augustus Hanover 1st Duke Kent and Strathearn (age 31) was created 1st Duke Kent and Strathearn.

Act of Union Peerages

In December 1800 [his father] King George III of Great Britain and Ireland (age 62) created a number of peers who supported the Act of Union...

On 21st December 1800 Charles Stanley Monck 1st Viscount Monck (age 46) was created 1st Viscount Monck.

In 1815 [his brother] Ernest Augustus King Hanover (age 43) and [his sister-in-law] Frederica Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort Hanover (age 36) were married. Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

She by marriage Duchess Kent and Strathearn. She the daughter of Francis Saxe Coburg Gotha I Duke Saxe Coburg Gotha and Augusta Reuss Duchess Saxe Coburg Gotha (age 61). He the son of King George III of Great Britain and Ireland (age 79) and Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England (age 74). They were third cousin once removed.

On 1st June 1818 [his brother] Adolphus Hanover 1st Duke Cambridge (age 44) and [his sister-in-law] Princess Augusta Hesse-Kassel Duchess Cambridge (age 20) were married. She by marriage Duchess Cambridge. The difference in their ages was 23 years. He the son of [his father] King George III of Great Britain and Ireland (age 79) and [his mother] Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England (age 74). They were second cousins. She a great granddaughter of King George II of Great Britain and Ireland.

On 17th November 1818 [his mother] Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England (age 74) died.

On 24th May 1819 [his daughter] Victoria was born to Edward Augustus Hanover 1st Duke Kent and Strathearn (age 51) and [his wife] Marie Luise Victoria Saxe Coburg Gotha Duchess Kent and Strathearn (age 32). She a granddaughter of King George III of Great Britain and Ireland. She married 10th February 1840 her first cousin Prince Albert Saxe Coburg Gotha, son of Ernest Saxe Coburg Gotha I Duke Saxe Coburg Gotha and Duchess Louise Dorothea of Saxe Coburg Altenburg, and had issue.

On 23rd January 1820 Edward Augustus Hanover 1st Duke Kent and Strathearn (age 52) died at Woolbrook Cottage Sidmouth, Devon.

On 12th February 1820 Edward Augustus Hanover 1st Duke Kent and Strathearn (deceased) was buried at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle [Map]. Duke Kent and Strathearn extinct.
