Biography of Jacqueline Wittelsbach Duchess Brabant and Gloucester 1401-1436

In February 1421 Jacqueline Wittelsbach Duchess Brabant and Gloucester issued a statement where she stated that, because of the destructive behaviour of John IV of Brabant, she wanted the annulment of her marriage. On 06 Mar 421 Jacqueline Wittelsbach Duchess Brabant and Gloucester fled to England where she was received by King Henry V whose brother [her future husband] Humphrey Lancaster 1st Duke Gloucester she subsequently married.

On 15 Jul 1401 Jacqueline Wittelsbach Duchess Brabant and Gloucester was born to William Wittelsbach IV Count Holland VI Count Hainault V Count Zeeland (age 36) and Margaret Valois Countess Holland (age 26).

In 1415 John Valois (age 16) and Jacqueline Wittelsbach Duchess Brabant and Gloucester (age 13) were married. She the daughter of William Wittelsbach IV Count Holland VI Count Hainault V Count Zeeland (age 49) and Margaret Valois Countess Holland (age 40). He the son of Charles "Beloved Mad" VI King France (age 46) and Isabeau Wittelsbach Queen Consort France (age 45). They were second cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King Henry III of England. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Edward I of England.

In 1417 [her father] William Wittelsbach IV Count Holland VI Count Hainault V Count Zeeland (age 51) died.

On 05 Apr 1417 [her husband] John Valois (age 18) died.

In 1418 John Valois IV Duke Brabant (age 14) and Jacqueline Wittelsbach Duchess Brabant and Gloucester (age 16) were married. She the daughter of William Wittelsbach IV Count Holland VI Count Hainault V Count Zeeland and Margaret Valois Countess Holland (age 43). He the son of Anthony Valois Duke Brabant and Jeanne Luxemburg Duchess Brabant. They were first cousins. He a great x 3 grandson of King Edward I of England. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Edward I of England.

In 1421 Eleanor Cobham Duchess of Gloucester (age 21) became a Lady-in-Waiting to Jacqueline Wittelsbach Duchess Brabant and Gloucester (age 19) who had travelled to England following her divorce from [her husband] John Valois IV Duke Brabant (age 17).

In 1422 John Valois IV Duke Brabant (age 18) and Jacqueline Wittelsbach Duchess Brabant and Gloucester (age 20) marriage annulled.

In that selfsame year, which was the year of human salvation 1422 and the first of Henry’s reign, [her future husband] Duke Humphrey of Gloucester (age 31) married Princess Jacobina of Bavaria (age 20), who had been married to [her husband] Duke John of Brabant (age 18), still alive. This caused men great astonishment, because, contrary to right and law, Gloucester wished to marry another man’s wife. But for Gloucester marriage with a wealthy woman counted for more than astonishment or talk. And Dukes [her future brother-in-law] John of Bedford (age 32), Philippe of Burgundy (age 25), and John of Britanny (age 32) met at Amiens and renewed their treaty, with the added conditions that they would each fight to defend the others, and all of them would fight to defend King Henry and keep him from harm, and this treaty was strengthened by a new kinship, with Burgundy’s sister Anne (age 17) being bestowed on Bedford, who was unmarried at the time. When the meeting broke up, he took her to Troyes [Map] and they celebrated a very splendid marriage, and then he returned to Paris. Meanwhile some citizens who lived under English rule unwillingly, seeing that Bedford was far away, decided to take [her former brother-in-law] Charles (age 18) into the city. Thinking that such an advantage should not be ignored, they advised Charles of their plan and announced a day on which he should come to the gates. This scheme made no headway, but rather was the ruin of its authors. Bedford came in time, and quicker than the conspirators had expected, and, learning of the conspiracy, he executed those he discovered to be participants therein. After these things, learning from this episode the true disposition of the burghers, with skill and care the duke began to fortify the city, station watches, anticipate French schemes, wishing nothing on his part to be left undone, thinking nothing on their part to be trustworthy.

Around 1423 Humphrey Lancaster 1st Duke Gloucester (age 32) and Jacqueline Wittelsbach Duchess Brabant and Gloucester (age 21) were married. She the daughter of William Wittelsbach IV Count Holland VI Count Hainault V Count Zeeland and Margaret Valois Countess Holland (age 48). He the son of King Henry IV of England and Mary Bohun. They were third cousins. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Edward I of England.

On 13 May 1423 [her brother-in-law] John Lancaster 1st Duke Bedford (age 33) and Anne Valois Duchess of Bedford (age 18) were married at Troyes, France [Map]. She by marriage Duchess Bedford She the daughter of [her uncle] John "Fearless" Valois Duke Burgundy and [her aunt] Margaret Wittelsbach Duchess Burgundy. He the son of King Henry IV of England and Mary Bohun. They were third cousins. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Edward I of England.

On 17 Apr 1427 [her former husband] John Valois IV Duke Brabant (age 23) died. His brother [her former brother-in-law] Philip (age 22) succeeded I Duke Brabant.

In 1428 [her husband] Humphrey Lancaster 1st Duke Gloucester (age 37) and Eleanor Cobham Duchess of Gloucester (age 28) were married. She by marriage Duchess Gloucester. He the son of King Henry IV of England and Mary Bohun.

In 1428 Humphrey Lancaster 1st Duke Gloucester (age 37) and Jacqueline Wittelsbach Duchess Brabant and Gloucester (age 26) marriage annulled.

On 05 Jan 1430 [her former sister-in-law] Philippa Lancaster Queen Consort Denmark (age 35) died at Cloister Church, Vadstena, Linköping.

In 1433 [her former brother-in-law] John Lancaster 1st Duke Bedford (age 43) was created 1st Duke Bedford. It isn't clear what had happened to the original title? Possibly re-created with a different remainder?

In 1434 Frank II Zeeland (age 38) and Jacqueline Wittelsbach Duchess Brabant and Gloucester (age 32) were married. She the daughter of William Wittelsbach IV Count Holland VI Count Hainault V Count Zeeland and Margaret Valois Countess Holland (age 59). She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Edward I of England.

On 08 Oct 1436 Jacqueline Wittelsbach Duchess Brabant and Gloucester (age 35) died.

On 19 Nov 1470 [her former husband] Frank II Zeeland (age 74) died.
