Biography of Marie Luise Victoria Saxe Coburg Gotha Duchess Kent and Strathearn 1786-1861

On 6th March 1776 [her father] Francis Saxe Coburg Gotha I Duke Saxe Coburg Gotha (age 25) and Sophie Saxe Hildburghausen Duchess Saxe Coburg Gotha were married. She by marriage Duchess Saxe Coburg Gotha. She the daughter of Ernst Friedrich Saxe Hildburghausen 2nd Duke Saxe Hildburghausen. He the son of [her grandfather] Ernest Frederick Saxe Coburg Saalfeld Duke Saxe Coburg Saalfeld (age 51) and [her grandmother] Sophia Antonia Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel Duchess Saxe Coburg Saalfeld (age 52).

On 13th June 1777 [her father] Francis Saxe Coburg Gotha I Duke Saxe Coburg Gotha (age 26) and [her mother] Augusta Reuss Duchess Saxe Coburg Gotha (age 20) were married. She by marriage Duchess Saxe Coburg Gotha. He the son of [her grandfather] Ernest Frederick Saxe Coburg Saalfeld Duke Saxe Coburg Saalfeld (age 53) and [her grandmother] Sophia Antonia Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel Duchess Saxe Coburg Saalfeld (age 53). They were half fifth cousins.

On 17th August 1786 Marie Luise Victoria Saxe Coburg Gotha Duchess Kent and Strathearn was born to Francis Saxe Coburg Gotha I Duke Saxe Coburg Gotha (age 36) and Augusta Reuss Duchess Saxe Coburg Gotha (age 29) at Coburg.

On 9th December 1806 [her father] Francis Saxe Coburg Gotha I Duke Saxe Coburg Gotha (age 56) died. His son [her brother] Ernest (age 22) succeeded I Duke Saxe Coburg Gotha.

On 29th May 1818 Edward Augustus Hanover 1st Duke Kent and Strathearn (age 50) and Marie Luise Victoria Saxe Coburg Gotha Duchess Kent and Strathearn (age 31) were married at Ehrenburg Palace. She by marriage Duchess Kent and Strathearn. She the daughter of Francis Saxe Coburg Gotha I Duke Saxe Coburg Gotha and Augusta Reuss Duchess Saxe Coburg Gotha (age 61). He the son of King George III of Great Britain and Ireland (age 79) and Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England (age 74). They were third cousin once removed.

On 1st June 1818 [her brother-in-law] Adolphus Hanover 1st Duke Cambridge (age 44) and Princess Augusta Hesse-Kassel Duchess Cambridge (age 20) were married. She by marriage Duchess Cambridge. The difference in their ages was 23 years. He the son of [her father-in-law] King George III of Great Britain and Ireland (age 79) and [her mother-in-law] Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England (age 74). They were second cousins. She a great granddaughter of King George II of Great Britain and Ireland.

On 11th July 1818 [her brother-in-law] King William IV of the United Kingdom (age 52) and Queen Adelaide of England (age 25) were married at Kew, Surrey. She by marriage Duchess Clarence and St Andrews. The difference in their ages was 26 years. He the son of [her father-in-law] King George III of Great Britain and Ireland (age 80).

On 11th July 1818 [her husband] Edward Augustus Hanover 1st Duke Kent and Strathearn (age 50) and Marie Luise Victoria Saxe Coburg Gotha Duchess Kent and Strathearn (age 31) were married at Kew Palace Kew, Surrey.

On 24th May 1819 [her daughter] Victoria was born to [her husband] Edward Augustus Hanover 1st Duke Kent and Strathearn (age 51) and Marie Luise Victoria Saxe Coburg Gotha Duchess Kent and Strathearn (age 32). She a granddaughter of King George III of Great Britain and Ireland.

On 23rd January 1820 [her husband] Edward Augustus Hanover 1st Duke Kent and Strathearn (age 52) died at Woolbrook Cottage Sidmouth, Devon.

In 1831 [her daughter] Princes Alexandrina Victoria of Kent (age 11), the future Queen Victoria, visited Shugborough Hall, Staffordshire [Map] with her mother, the Duchess of Kent (age 44), as part of an extensive tour of the country.

On 16th November 1831 [her mother] Augusta Reuss Duchess Saxe Coburg Gotha (age 74) died.

Wedding of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert

On 10th February 1840 [her son-in-law] Prince Albert Saxe Coburg Gotha (age 20) and [her daughter] Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom (age 20) were married by Archbishop Charles Longley (age 45) at Chapel Royal, St James's Palace. She the daughter of [her former husband] Edward Augustus Hanover 1st Duke Kent and Strathearn and Marie Luise Victoria Saxe Coburg Gotha Duchess Kent and Strathearn (age 53). He the son of [her brother] Ernest Saxe Coburg Gotha I Duke Saxe Coburg Gotha (age 56) and Duchess Louise Dorothea of Saxe Coburg Altenburg. They were first cousins. She a granddaughter of King George III of Great Britain and Ireland.

THIS day the Marriage of the [her daughter] QUEEN'S MOST EXCELLENT MAJESTY (age 20) with [her son-in-law] Field Marshal His ROYAL HIGHNESS FRANCIS ALBERT AUGUSTUS CHARLES EMANUEL, DUKE OF SAXE, PRINCE OF SAXE COBOURG AND GOTHA, Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter (age 20), was solemnized at the Chapel Royal, St James's Palace.

Field Marshal His Royal Highness the Prince Albert, attended by his Suite, proceeded from Buckingham-Palace [Map] this day, about half past eleven o'clock, to St. James's-Palace [Map], in the following order:

Conveying General Sir George Anson, G.C.B. (age 43); George Edward Anson, Esq (age 27); and Francis Seymour, Esq (age 26); the Bridegroom's Gentlemen of Honour.

Conveying the Lord Chamberlain of the Household, the Earl of Uxbridge (age 42) (who afterwards returned to Buckingham-Palace [Map], to attend in Her Majesty's Procession), and the Officers of the Suite of His Serene Highness the Reigning Duke of Saxe Cobourg and Gotha, and the Hereditary Prince of Saxe Cobourg and Gotha, viz. Queen Victoria's Journal 1848. 18th January 1848. Windsor Castle [Map]. A fine, frosty morning. — We took a walk after breakfast. — Poor Ld Powis (deceased) has died in a most melancholy way. The whole party were out shooting & his 3rd son (age 22) accidentally shot his father in the thigh. At 1st he went on well, but unfortunately mortification set in, & he died. It is too dreadful for the unfortunate son. — [her granddaughter] Vicky (age 7) sat to Dyce (age 41) [See image], who began a new drawing. — Mama (age 61) came to luncheon, & we walked out again afterwards. — Mama, &c — & Ld Liverpool (age 63) (staying till the end of the week) dined. —

The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." On 27th May 1848 [her former sister-in-law] Princess Sophia Hanover (age 70) died at Vicarage Place Kensington. Princess Augusta Hesse-Kassel Duchess Cambridge (age 50) and Marie Luise Victoria Saxe Coburg Gotha Duchess Kent and Strathearn (age 61) were present.

On 16th March 1861 Marie Luise Victoria Saxe Coburg Gotha Duchess Kent and Strathearn (age 74) died. She was buried at Duchess of Kent's Mausoleum Frogmore Estate Home Park Windsor, Berkshire.
