The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

Robert Beaumont 1st Earl of Leicester Count Meulan was appointed Count Meulan. Elizabeth Capet Countess Leicester, Meulan and Surrey by marriage Countess Meulan.

In 1040 Robert Beaumont 1st Earl of Leicester Count Meulan was born to Roger "Bearded" Beaumont (age 25) and Adeline Meulan.

14th October 1066 Battle of Hastings

On 14th October 1066 the Norman army led by King William "Conqueror" I of England (age 38) defeated the English army of King Harold II of England (age 44) at the 14th October 1066 Battle of Hastings fought at Senlac Hill Hastings. Aimery Thouars (age 42), Ralph de Gael 2nd Earl East Anglia (age 24), Eustace Flanders II Count Boulogne (age 51), William Fitzosbern 1st Earl Hereford (age 46), Geoffrey Chateaudun II Count Mortain III Count Perche, William Warenne 1st Earl of Surrey, Raoul Tosny, Robert Beaumont 1st Earl of Leicester Count Meulan (age 26), Hugh Grandesmil (age 34), Roger "The Great" Montgomery 1st Earl of Shrewsbury (possibly), Robert Mortain Count Mortain 1st Earl Cornwall (age 35) and Bishop Odo of Bayeux fought for William.

King Harold II of England was killed. Earl Wessex, Earl Hereford extinct.

Leofwine Godwinson 2nd Earl Kent (age 31) was killed. Earl Kent extinct.

His brothers Gyrth Godwinson Earl East Anglia (age 34) and Engenulphe Aigle (age 56) were killed.

On 20th November 1094 [his father] Roger "Bearded" Beaumont (age 79) died.

In 1096 Robert Beaumont 1st Earl of Leicester Count Meulan (age 56) and Elizabeth Capet Countess Leicester, Meulan and Surrey (age 11) were married. She by marriage Countess of Leicester. The difference in their ages was 45 years. She the daughter of Hugh "Great" Capet (age 39) and Adelaide I Countess Vermandois.

Death of William II Accession of Henry I

On 2nd August 1100 King William II of England (age 44) died in a hunting accident, not known whether accidentally or otherwise, in the New Forest, Hampshire. His brother Henry (age 32) succeeded I King of England. The brothers Robert Beaumont 1st Earl of Leicester Count Meulan (age 60) and [his half-brother] Henry Beaumont 1st Earl Warwick (age 50), and Roger de Clare (age 34) and Gilbert de Clare (age 34) were present.

In 1102 [his daughter] Emma Beaumont was born to Robert Beaumont 1st Earl of Leicester Count Meulan (age 62) and [his wife] Elizabeth Capet Countess Leicester, Meulan and Surrey (age 17).

In 1104 [his son] Waleran Beaumont 1st Earl of Worcester Count Meulan was born to Robert Beaumont 1st Earl of Leicester Count Meulan (age 64) and [his wife] Elizabeth Capet Countess Leicester, Meulan and Surrey (age 19).

In 1104 [his son] Robert Beaumont 2nd Earl of Leicester was born to Robert Beaumont 1st Earl of Leicester Count Meulan (age 64) and [his wife] Elizabeth Capet Countess Leicester, Meulan and Surrey (age 19).

In 1106 [his son] Hugh Beaumont was born to Robert Beaumont 1st Earl of Leicester Count Meulan (age 66) and [his wife] Elizabeth Capet Countess Leicester, Meulan and Surrey (age 21).

Battle of Tinchebray

On 28th September 1106 King Henry I "Beauclerc" England (age 38) defeated his older brother Robert Curthose III Duke Normandy (age 55) at the Battle of Tinchebray at Tinchebray, Orne.

William Warenne 2nd Earl of Surrey and Robert Beaumont 1st Earl of Leicester Count Meulan (age 66). Elias La Flèche De Baugency I Count Maine commanded the reserve. The following fought for Henry:

William "Brito aka Breton" D'Aubigny (age 20).

Alan Canhiart IV Duke Brittany (age 43).

Raoul Tosny (age 26).

William "Pincerna aka Butler" D'Aubigny (age 42).

Robert Grandesmil (age 28), and.

William Normandy I Count Évreux.

Robert Curthose III Duke Normandy was captured and spent the next twenty-eight years in prison; never released.

William Mortain Count Mortain 2nd Earl Cornwall (age 22) was also captured. He spent the next thirty or more years in prison before becoming a monk. Earl Cornwall forfeit.

King Edgar Ætheling II of England (age 55) was captured and subsequently released; Henry had married to Edgar's niece Edith aka Matilda Dunkeld Queen Consort England (age 26) in 1100.

Robert II Belleme 2nd Count Ponthieu 3rd Earl of Shrewsbury (age 50) escaped.

Robert Stuteville was captured.

In 1107 Robert Beaumont 1st Earl of Leicester Count Meulan (age 67) was created 1st Earl of Leicester.

In 1118 Charles Estrigen I Count Flanders (age 34) and [his sister-in-law] Marguerite Clermont Countess Flanders (age 13) were married. The difference in their ages was 21 years. She the daughter of Renaud II Count Clermont (age 43) and [his mother-in-law] Adelaide I Countess Vermandois. He the son of King Canute "The Holy" IV of Denmark and Adela Flanders Queen Consort Denmark. They were half sixth cousins.

On 5th June 1118 Robert Beaumont 1st Earl of Leicester Count Meulan (age 78) died. His son [his son] Robert (age 14) succeeded 2nd Earl of Leicester. [his future daughter-in-law] Amice Gael Countess Leicester by marriage Countess of Leicester. His son [his son] Waleran (age 14) succeeded Count Meulan.

Before 1119 William Warenne 2nd Earl of Surrey and [his former wife] Elizabeth Capet Countess Leicester, Meulan and Surrey (age 33) were married. She by marriage Countess Surrey. She the daughter of [his former father-in-law] Hugh "Great" Capet and [his former mother-in-law] Adelaide I Countess Vermandois. He the son of William Warenne 1st Earl of Surrey and Gundred Countess of Surrey.

On 13th February 1131 [his former wife] Elizabeth Capet Countess Leicester, Meulan and Surrey (age 46) died.

The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed."
