Biography of Duke Adolph Oldenburg of Holstein-Gotorp 1526-1586

Paternal Family Tree: Oldenburg

On 10th April 1502 [his father] King Frederick I of Denmark (age 30) and Anna of Brandenburg (age 14) were married. She the daughter of John "Cicero" Hohenzollern Elector Brandenburg and Margaret of Thuringia. He the son of [his grandfather] Christian I King Denmark and [his grandmother] Dorothea of Brandenburg. They were half second cousins.

On 9th October 1518 [his father] King Frederick I of Denmark (age 47) and [his mother] Sophie of Pomerania Queen Consort of Denmark and Sweden (age 20) were married. The difference in their ages was 26 years. He the son of [his grandfather] Christian I King Denmark and [his grandmother] Dorothea of Brandenburg.

On 25th January 1526 Duke Adolph Oldenburg of Holstein-Gotorp was born to King Frederick I of Denmark (age 54) and Sophie of Pomerania Queen Consort of Denmark and Sweden (age 28).

On 10th April 1533 [his father] King Frederick I of Denmark (age 61) died. His son [his half-brother] Christian (age 29) succeeded III King Denmark.

In 1544 Duke Adolph Oldenburg of Holstein-Gotorp (age 17) was created 1st Duke of Holstein Gotorp.

In 1560 Duke Adolph Oldenburg of Holstein-Gotorp (age 33) was appointed 343rd Knight of the Garter by Queen Elizabeth I of England and Ireland (age 26). It isn't entirely clear why he was awarded the Garter. He was a thirty-four years old, unmarried younger son of the [his father] King of Denark. He may have been pursuing a marriage to Queen Elizabeth I of England and Ireland.

Henry Machyn's Diary. 13th December 1560. The xiij of Desember was stallyd at Wyndsor [Map] the duke of Wanholt (age 34), knyght of the nobull order of the gartter, and the good erle of Ruttland (age 34) was the quen('s) (age 27) depute at that tyme.

On 17th December 1564 Duke Adolph Oldenburg of Holstein-Gotorp (age 38) and Christine Hesse (age 21) were married. She the daughter of Landgrave Philip I of Hesse (age 60) and Christine of Saxony. He the son of King Frederick I of Denmark and Sophie of Pomerania Queen Consort of Denmark and Sweden (age 66). They were half fourth cousin once removed.

In 1568 [his mother] Sophie of Pomerania Queen Consort of Denmark and Sweden (age 70) died.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 13th April 1573 [his daughter] Christina Oldenburg was born to Duke Adolph Oldenburg of Holstein-Gotorp (age 47) and [his wife] Christine Hesse (age 29).

On 11th March 1574 [his daughter] Elisabeth Oldenburg was born to Duke Adolph Oldenburg of Holstein-Gotorp (age 48) and [his wife] Christine Hesse (age 30).

On 27th February 1575 [his son] John Adolph Oldenburg was born to Duke Adolph Oldenburg of Holstein-Gotorp (age 49) and [his wife] Christine Hesse (age 31).

On 27th February 1575 [his daughter] Anna of Holstein-Gottorp was born to Duke Adolph Oldenburg of Holstein-Gotorp (age 49) and [his wife] Christine Hesse (age 31).

On 29th May 1576 [his son] Christian Oldenburg was born to Duke Adolph Oldenburg of Holstein-Gotorp (age 50) and [his wife] Christine Hesse (age 32).

On 22nd April 1577 [his son] Christian Oldenburg died.

On 1st October 1586 Duke Adolph Oldenburg of Holstein-Gotorp (age 60) died.
