Biography of John Stuart 1st Marquis of the Isle of Bute 1744-1814

Around 20th August 1736 [his father] John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute (age 23) and [his mother] Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute (age 18) were married. He the son of [his grandfather] James Stuart 2nd Earl Bute and [his grandmother] Anne Campbell Countess Bute (age 50). They were fifth cousins.

On 30th June 1744 John Stuart 1st Marquis of the Isle of Bute was born to John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute (age 31) and Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute (age 26) at Mount Stuart House.

On 7th June 1777 [his son] Henry Crichton-Stuart was born to John Stuart 1st Marquis of the Isle of Bute (age 32) and [his wife] Charlotte Jane Windsor Marchioness Bute (age 31).

On 18th November 1778 [his son] William Stuart was born to John Stuart 1st Marquis of the Isle of Bute (age 34) and [his wife] Charlotte Jane Windsor Marchioness Bute (age 32).

On 1st March 1780 [his son] George Stuart was born to John Stuart 1st Marquis of the Isle of Bute (age 35) and [his wife] Charlotte Jane Windsor Marchioness Bute (age 34).

On 10th March 1792 [his father] John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute (age 78) died. His son John (age 47) succeeded 4th Earl Bute. [his wife] Charlotte Jane Windsor Marchioness Bute (age 46) by marriage Countess Bute.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

The King has been pleased to grant thc Dignities of Viscount, Earl and Marquis of the Kingdom of Great Britain to the Right Honorable John Earl of Bute (age 51), His Majesty's Ambassador Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary at the Court of Spain, and to the Heirs Male of his Body lawfully begotten, by the Names, Stile and Titles of Viscount Mountjoy, of the Isle of Wight, Earl of Windsor, and Marquis of the Isle of Bute. [[his wife] Charlotte Jane Windsor Marchioness Bute (age 50) by marriage Marchioness of the Isle of Bute.]

On 12th December 1799 John Stuart 1st Marquis of the Isle of Bute (age 55) was appointed Fellow of the Royal Society.

In 1800 [his wife] Charlotte Jane Windsor Marchioness Bute (age 54) died.

On 28th January 1800 John Stuart 1st Marquis of the Isle of Bute (age 55) and Frances Coutts Marchioness Bute were married. She by marriage Marchioness of the Isle of Bute. He the son of John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute and Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute.

On 15th July 1802 [his son] Henry Crichton-Stuart (age 25) and [his daughter-in-law] Gertrude Amelia Mason Villiers (age 30) were married. She the daughter of George Mason aka Villiers 2nd Earl Grandison and Gertrude Seymour-Conway. He the son of John Stuart 1st Marquis of the Isle of Bute (age 58) and [his former wife] Charlotte Jane Windsor Marchioness Bute. They were sixth cousins. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 11th January 1803 [his son] Dudley Coutts Stuart was born to John Stuart 1st Marquis of the Isle of Bute (age 58) and [his wife] Frances Coutts Marchioness Bute.

On 19th August 1809 [his son] Henry Crichton-Stuart (age 32) died.

The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed."
