Biography of Susan Harriet Grant-Suttie 1859-1946

On 6th August 1857 [her father] James Grant-Suttie 6th Baronet (age 27) and [her mother] Susan Harriet Innes-Kerr (age 19) were married. She the daughter of [her grandfather] James Innes-Kerr 6th Duke Roxburghe (age 41).

On 11th February 1859 Susan Harriet Grant-Suttie was born to James Grant-Suttie 6th Baronet (age 28) and Susan Harriet Innes-Kerr (age 21).

On 10th April 1878 John Dalrymple 11th Earl of Stair (age 29) and Susan Harriet Grant-Suttie (age 19) were married. He the son of John Dalrymple 10th Earl of Stair (age 59).

On 30th October 1878 [her father] James Grant-Suttie 6th Baronet (age 48) died.

On 1st February 1879 [her son] John James Dalrymple 12th Earl of Stair was born to [her husband] John Dalrymple 11th Earl of Stair (age 30) and Susan Harriet Grant-Suttie (age 19).

In 1905 John Dalrymple 11th Earl of Stair (age 56) and Susan Harriet Grant-Suttie (age 45) were divorced.

On 15th July 1905 Neil James Menzies 8th Baronet (age 50) and Susan Harriet Grant-Suttie (age 46) were married.

On 1st June 1908 [her son-in-law] Archibald Montgomerie 16th Earl of Eglinton (age 27) and [her daughter] Beatrice Susan Dalrymple Countess Eglinton were married. She the daughter of [her former husband] John Dalrymple 11th Earl of Stair (age 59) and Susan Harriet Grant-Suttie (age 49). He the son of George Montgomerie 15th Earl of Eglinton (age 60).

On 16th October 1909 [her mother] Susan Harriet Innes-Kerr (age 71) died. Her funeral was held on 21st October 1909 at Prestonpans Parish Church. All Prestonpans shops and businesses were closed from midday as a mark of respect, with residents of the town lining the streets as her funeral cortege passed by. Her body was then conveyed on a special train service to Dunbar [Map] where she was buried. The pallbearers at Dunbar included her sons-in-law, Sir [her husband] Neil Menzies (age 54), Bart-the second husband of her daughter Susan (age 50) and George Smith, her grandson [her son] Viscount Dalrymple (age 30), her nephew the Duke of Roxburghe (age 33), plus Lord [her uncle] Charles Innes Ker (age 66), Mr [her uncle] Robert Grant Suttie (age 67), Lord Montgomerie and Mr John Russel carried her coffin from the station to the churchyard. In 1911 a plaque to her memory was unveiled at Prestonpans Parish Church.

On 21st December 1910 [her husband] Neil James Menzies 8th Baronet (age 55) died.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 2nd December 1914 [her former husband] John Dalrymple 11th Earl of Stair (age 66) died. His son [her son] John (age 35) succeeded 12th Earl of Stair.

In 1922 [her son-in-law] Archibald Montgomerie 16th Earl of Eglinton (age 41) and [her daughter] Beatrice Susan Dalrymple Countess Eglinton were divorced.

On 9th February 1946 Susan Harriet Grant-Suttie (age 86) died.

[her daughter] Beatrice Susan Dalrymple Countess Eglinton was born to John Dalrymple 11th Earl of Stair and Susan Harriet Grant-Suttie.
