Archbishop Richard of Dover -1184

In 1157 Archbishop Richard of Dover was appointed Prior of St Martins in Dover.

On 3rd February 1173 Archbishop Richard of Dover was elected Archbishop of Canterbury although the monks preferred Odo, Prior of Canterbury.

On 7th April 1174 Archbishop Richard of Dover was consecrated Archbishop of Canterbury at Anagni Frosinone Latium by Pope Alexander III. Richard returned to England at the close of the year bearing his pallium which he had received directly from the pope.

On 3rd July 1183 Archbishop Walter de Coutances was consecrated Bishop of Lincoln at Angers Cathedral [Map] by Archbishop Richard of Dover.

On 16th February 1184 Archbishop Richard of Dover died at Haling, Kent. He was buried at Canterbury Cathedral [Map].

Chronicum Anglicanum by Ralph Coggeshall. Year 1184. Richard1, archbishop of Canterbury, died, and Master Baldwin, bishop of Worcester, succeeded him, who had previously been a monk of the Cistercian Order and had been abbot of Forde. Abel, the first abbot of St Osyth, also died.

Note 1. Archbishop Richard of Dover, elected 1173, consecrated 1174, died 1184. He was succeeded by Baldwin of Forde who died in 1190 at Acre whilst participating in the Third Crusade.
