A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

On 16th November 1814 John Stuart 1st Marquis of the Isle of Bute [aged 70] died. His grandson John [aged 21] succeeded 2nd Marquis of the Isle of Bute, 5th Earl Bute, 2nd Earl of Windsor, 2nd Viscount Mountjoy of the Isle of Wight.

On 18th March 1848 John Crichton-Stuart 2nd Marquis of the Isle of Bute [aged 54] died at Cardiff. His son John succeeded 3rd Marquis of the Isle of Bute, 6th Earl Bute, 3rd Earl of Windsor, 3rd Viscount Mountjoy of the Isle of Wight.

On 9th October 1900 John Crichton-Stuart 3rd Marquis of the Isle of Bute [aged 53] died. His son John [aged 19] succeeded 4th Marquis of the Isle of Bute, 7th Earl Bute, 4th Earl of Windsor, 4th Viscount Mountjoy of the Isle of Wight.

On 25th April 1947 John Crichton-Stuart 4th Marquis of the Isle of Bute [aged 65] died. His son John Crichton-Stuart [aged 39] succeeded 5th Marquis of the Isle of Bute, 8th Earl Bute, 5th Earl of Windsor, 5th Viscount Mountjoy of the Isle of Wight. Eileen Forbes [aged 35] by marriage Marchioness of the Isle of Bute.

On 14th August 1956 John Crichton-Stuart 5th Marquess of Bute [aged 49] died. His son John [aged 23] succeeded 6th Marquis of the Isle of Bute, 9th Earl Bute, 6th Earl of Windsor, 6th Viscount Mountjoy of the Isle of Wight.

On 21st July 1993 John Crichton-Stuart 6th Marquess of Bute [aged 60] died. His son John [aged 35] succeeded 7th Marquis of the Isle of Bute, 10th Earl Bute, 7th Earl of Windsor, 7th Viscount Mountjoy of the Isle of Wight.

On 22nd March 2021 John Crichton-Stuart 7th Marquess of Bute [aged 62] died. His son John [aged 31] succeeded 8th Marquis of the Isle of Bute, 11th Earl Bute, 8th Earl of Windsor, 8th Viscount Mountjoy of the Isle of Wight.
