Duke Montagu

There have been two creations of Duke Montagu:

1st. 1705. Ralph Montagu 1st Duke Montagu. Extinct. 6th July 1749.

2nd. 5th November 1766. George Brudenell aka Montagu 1st Duke Montagu. Extinct. 23rd May 1790.

Duke Montagu 1st Creation 1705

Summary

1705. 1st. Ralph Montagu 1st Duke Montagu [aged 66] created.

9th March 1709. 2nd. Son John Montagu 2nd Duke Montagu [aged 19] succeeded.

6th July 1749. 2nd. John Montagu 2nd Duke Montagu extinct.

In 1705 Ralph Montagu 1st Duke Montagu [aged 66] was created 1st Duke Montagu. Elizabeth "Mad Duchess" Cavendish Duchess Albermarle Duchess of Montagu [aged 50] by marriage Duchess Montagu.

On 9th March 1709 Ralph Montagu 1st Duke Montagu [aged 70] died. He was buried at Westminster Abbey [Map]. His son John [aged 19] succeeded 2nd Duke Montagu, 4th Baron Montagu of Boughton in Northamptonshire. Mary Churchill Duchess of Montagu [aged 19] by marriage Duchess Montagu.

On 6th July 1749 John Montagu 2nd Duke Montagu [aged 59] died without surviving male issue. Duke Montagu extinct. His estates were inherited by his daughter Mary [aged 38] and her husband George Brudenell aka Montagu 1st Duke Montagu [aged 36] who changed his name to Montagu from Brudenell. Monument in St Edmund's Church, Warkton [Map]. Sculpted by Louis Francois Roubiliac [aged 46]. Erected by his widow, Mary Churchill [aged 59], the daughter of the 1st Duke of Marlborough, who stands at the left hand side of the monument.

Duke Montagu 2nd Creation 1766

Summary

23rd May 1790. 1st. George Brudenell aka Montagu 1st Duke Montagu extinct.

On 5th November 1766 George Brudenell aka Montagu 1st Duke Montagu [aged 54] was created 1st Duke Montagu. Mary Montagu Duchess of Montagu [aged 55] by marriage Duchess Montagu. He was the son-in-law of the last Duke of the previous creation John Montagu 2nd Duke Montagu.

On 23rd May 1790 George Brudenell aka Montagu 1st Duke Montagu [aged 77] died. Duke Montagu extinct. His brother James [aged 65] succeeded 5th Earl Cardigan, 5th Baron Brudenell of Stonton in Leicestershire. Elizabeth Waldegrave Countess Cardigan [aged 31] by marriage Countess Cardigan. His grandson Henry [aged 13] succeeded 2nd Baron Montagu of Boughton in Northamptonshire.
