Biography of Fiennes Wykeham-Martin Cornwallis 1831-1867

Paternal Family Tree: Martyn aka Cornwallis

In 1828 [his father] Charles Wykeham-Martin (age 26) and [his mother] Jemima Isabella Mann were married. She the daughter of James Mann 5th Earl Cornwallis (age 49).

On 01 Nov 1831 Fiennes Wykeham-Martin Cornwallis was born to Charles Wykeham-Martin (age 30) and Jemima Isabella Mann at Leeds Castle, Kent [Map].

In 1836 [his mother] Jemima Isabella Mann died. Her son Fiennes Wykeham-Martin Cornwallis (age 4) inherited Boughton aka Bocton Place, Kent [Map].

Charge of the Light Brigade

On 25 Oct 1854 Hedworth Joliffe 2nd Baron Hylton (age 25) took part in the Charge of the Light Brigade.

Godfrey Morgan 1st Viscount Tredegar (age 23) was in command of a section of the Light Brigade. His horse "Sir Briggs" survived, died aged twenty-eight and was buried in the Cedar Garden at Tredegar House, Monmouthshire where there is a monument to him.

Thomas Hutton took part. He was shot through the right thigh during the advance, and on returning from the guns he was again severely wounded through the left thigh.

George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet (age 21) took part and survived. His horse was killed under him and he was shortly after pulled off and taken prisoner, his sword and pistols being taken from him by some Russian Lancers. He managed to escape, catch another loose horse and ride back to the British lines, pursued by Russians.

Fiennes Wykeham-Martin Cornwallis (age 22) took part.

The Queen has been pleased to give and grant unto Fiennes Wykeham-Martin (age 27), of Leeds Castle, in the county of Kent, a Captain in Her Majesty's Fourth Regiment of Light Dragoons, second son of Charles Wykeham-Martin (age 58), of Leeds Castle, aforesaid, Esquire, by the Honourable Jemima Isabella, his wife, commonly called Lady Jemima Isabella Wykeham-Martin, daughter of James, fifth and last Earl Cornwallis, both deceased, Her Royal licence and authority that he may, in compliance with a proviso contained in the last will and testament of Caroline Frances Cornwallis, of Nizells Heath, in the parish of Tonbridge, in the county of Kent, and afterwards of Lidwells, in the parish of Goudhurst, in the same county, spinster, take the surname of Cornwallis in lieu of his present surnames of Wykeham Martin, and also bear the arms of Cornwallis, and that such surname and arms may in like manner be taken and borne by his issue; such arms being first duly exemplified according to the laws of arms, and recorded in the Heralds' Office, other wise the said Royal concession and declaration to be void and of none effect.

And also to command that the said Royal con cession and declaration be recorded in Her Majesty's College of Arms.

On 05 May 1863 Fiennes Wykeham-Martin Cornwallis (age 31) retired from the Army with the rank of Major.

On 29 Jul 1863 Fiennes Wykeham-Martin Cornwallis (age 31) and Harriet Elizabeth Mott were married. They had four children.

On 27 May 1864 [his son] Fiennes Cornwallis 1st Baron Cornwallis was born to Fiennes Wykeham-Martin Cornwallis (age 32) and [his wife] Harriet Elizabeth Mott at Chacombe Priory, Banbury [Map].

On 24 Apr 1867 Fiennes Wykeham-Martin Cornwallis (age 35) died in a hunting accident. His son [his son] Fiennes Cornwallis 1st Baron Cornwallis (age 2) inherited Boughton aka Bocton Place, Kent [Map].
