Biography of George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet 1832-1913

Paternal Family Tree: Wombwell

On 23 Jun 1824 [his father] George Wombwell 3rd Baronet (age 32) and [his mother] Georgiana Hunter were married.

On 25 Nov 1832 George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet was born to George Wombwell 3rd Baronet (age 40) and Georgiana Hunter.

On 28 Oct 1846 [his grandfather] George Wombwell 2nd Baronet (age 77) died. His son [his father] George Wombwell 3rd Baronet (age 54) succeeded 3rd Baronet Wombwell of Wombwell in Yorkshire.

Charge of the Light Brigade

On 25 Oct 1854 Hedworth Joliffe 2nd Baron Hylton (age 25) took part in the Charge of the Light Brigade.

Godfrey Morgan 1st Viscount Tredegar (age 23) was in command of a section of the Light Brigade. His horse "Sir Briggs" survived, died aged twenty-eight and was buried in the Cedar Garden at Tredegar House, Monmouthshire where there is a monument to him.

Thomas Hutton took part. He was shot through the right thigh during the advance, and on returning from the guns he was again severely wounded through the left thigh.

George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet (age 21) took part and survived. His horse was killed under him and he was shortly after pulled off and taken prisoner, his sword and pistols being taken from him by some Russian Lancers. He managed to escape, catch another loose horse and ride back to the British lines, pursued by Russians.

Fiennes Wykeham-Martin Cornwallis (age 22) took part.

On 14 Jan 1855 [his father] George Wombwell 3rd Baronet (age 62) died. His son George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet (age 22) succeeded 4th Baronet Wombwell of Wombwell in Yorkshire.

On 03 Sep 1861 George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet (age 28) and Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell (age 19) were married. She the daughter of George Child-Villiers 6th Earl Jersey and Julia Peel Countess Jersey.

In 1862 [his daughter] Julia Georgiana Wombwell Countess Dartrey was born to George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet (age 29) and [his wife] Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell (age 19).

On 25 Oct 1864 [his daughter] Cecilia Clementia Wombwell was born to George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet (age 31) and [his wife] Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell (age 22).

In 1865 [his son] George Wombwell was born to George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet (age 32) and [his wife] Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell (age 22).

In 1867 [his son] Stephen Frederick Wombwell was born to George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet (age 34) and [his wife] Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell (age 24).

In 1882 [his son-in-law] Vesey Dawson 2nd Earl of Dartrey (age 39) and [his daughter] Julia Georgiana Wombwell Countess Dartrey (age 20) were married.

In 1889 [his son] George Wombwell (age 24) died at Meerut in India on active service.

On 28 Jul 1890 [his son-in-law] William Dudgeon Graham Menzies and [his daughter] Cecilia Clementia Wombwell (age 25) were married.

In 1901 [his son] Stephen Frederick Wombwell (age 34) died of enteric fever at Vryburg in South Africa during the Second Boer War while serving as a captain with the Imperial Yeomanry.

George Wombwell: In 1865 he was born to George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet and Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell. In 1889 George Wombwell died at Meerut in India on active service.

Stephen Frederick Wombwell: In 1867 he was born to George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet and Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell. Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell: On 11 May 1842 she was born to George Child-Villiers 6th Earl Jersey and Julia Peel Countess Jersey. On 03 Sep 1861 George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet and she were married. She the daughter of George Child-Villiers 6th Earl Jersey and Julia Peel Countess Jersey. On 24 Oct 1921 Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell died.

On 16 Oct 1913 George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet (age 80) died. He was buried at St Michael's Church, Coxwold [Map]. He was the last surviving officer of the Charge of the Light Brigade. His brother [his brother] Henry Herbert Wombwell 5th Baronet (age 73) succeeded 5th Baronet Wombwell of Wombwell in Yorkshire.

On 24 Oct 1921 [his former wife] Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell (age 79) died.
