On 20 Jul 1385 Richard of Conisbrough 1st Earl Cambridge was born to Edmund of Langley 1st Duke York (age 44) and Isabella of Castile Duchess York (age 30) at Conisbrough Castle [Map] although there was speculation the father was John Holland 1st Duke Exeter (age 33) with whom Isabella of Castile Duchess York (age 30) was suspected of having an affair. He a grandson of King Edward III of England.

Richard II Creates his Two Uncles as Dukes

On 06 Aug 1385 [his father] Edmund of Langley 1st Duke York (age 44) was created 1st Duke York by King Richard II of England (age 18). [his mother] Isabella of Castile Duchess York (age 30) by marriage Duchess York.

However, given his young age his mother's brother William Ros 6th Baron Ros Helmsley (age 21) enjoyed the benefit of his wardship until he came of age around Sep 1411.

On 23 Dec 1392 [his mother] Isabella of Castile Duchess York (age 37) died. She the wife of [his father] Edmund of Langley 1st Duke York (age 51). Isabella and Edmund's marriage was not, apparently, a happy one. She is known to have had an affair with John Holland 1st Duke Exeter (age 40) who may have been the father of Richard of Conisbrough 1st Earl Cambridge (age 7) progenitor of the House of York.

On 04 Nov 1393 [his father] Edmund of Langley 1st Duke York (age 52) and [his step-mother] Joan Holland Duchess York (age 13) were married. She by marriage Duchess York. They were third cousin once removed. He a great x 4 grandson of King Edward "Longshanks" I of England. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

In May 1406 Richard of Conisbrough 1st Earl Cambridge (age 20) and Anne Mortimer (age 15) were married. The marriage apparently took place in secret possibly because she was a descendant of King Edward III of England although she wasn't at the time Heir to the Throne of England although their issue would become so. She died five years later. She the daughter of Roger Mortimer 4th Earl March 6th Earl Ulster and Eleanor Holland Countess March and Ulster. He the son of Edmund of Langley 1st Duke York and Isabella of Castile Duchess York. They were first cousin twice removed. He a grandson of King Edward III of England. On 21 Sep 1411 [his son] Richard Plantagenet 3rd Duke York was born to Richard of Conisbrough 1st Earl Cambridge (age 26) and [his wife] Anne Mortimer (age 20). His mother died shortly afterwards. He a great grandson of King Edward III of England. Coefficient of inbreeding 2.28%.

After 21 Sep 1411 Richard of Conisbrough 1st Earl Cambridge (age 26) and Maud Clifford Countess Cambridge (age 22) were married. He the son of Edmund of Langley 1st Duke York and Isabella of Castile Duchess York. He a grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Edward "Longshanks" I of England.

After 21 Sep 1411 [his former wife] Anne Mortimer (age 20) died from childbirth. Her son [his son] Richard Plantagenet 3rd Duke York succeeded Heir to the Throne of England, 8th Earl Ulster.

Around 1413 [his former brother-in-law] Roger Mortimer (age 19) died.

On 18 Feb 1413 [his son-in-law] Thomas Grey of Heton (age 9) and [his daughter] Isabel York Countess Eu and Essex (age 4) were married. She the daughter of Richard of Conisbrough 1st Earl Cambridge (age 27) and Anne Mortimer. They were fourth cousins. He a great x 4 grandson of King Edward "Longshanks" I of England. In 1414 [his brother] Edward York 2nd Duke of York 1st Duke Albemarle (age 41)resigned the Earldom of Cambridge. It appears he took this action so that his brother Richard of Conisbrough 1st Earl Cambridge (age 28) could be created Earl Cambridge (of the third creation) later that year.

Henry Scrope 3rd Baron Scrope Masham (age 42), Thomas Grey of Werke and Heaton (age 30), and Richard of Conisbrough 1st Earl Cambridge (age 30) were intending to replace King Henry V of England (age 28) with Edmund Mortimer 5th Earl March 7th Earl Ulster (age 23) as King of England based on Edmund Mortimer 5th Earl March 7th Earl Ulster (age 23) having a better claim to the throne being descended from Edward III's second son Lionel Plantagenet 1st Duke of Clarence whereas King Henry V of England (age 28) was descended from the third son [his uncle] John of Gaunt 1st Duke Lancaster.
