Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough
A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

On 12th July 1664 [his grandfather] Francis Seymour 1st Baron Seymour of Trowbridge [aged 74] died. He was buried in the Chanel of St Mary's Church, Great Bedwyn [Map]. His son [his father] Charles [aged 43] succeeded 2nd Baron Seymour of Trowbridge.
On 25th August 1665 [his father] Charles Seymour 2nd Baron Seymour of Trowbridge [aged 44] died, possibly of plague. His son [his brother] Francis [aged 7] succeeded 3rd Baron Seymour of Trowbridge.
On 31st May 1670 Josceline Percy 11th Earl of Northumberland [aged 25] died in Turin without male issue. Earl of Northumberland, Baron Percy of Alnwick and Baron Percy of Topcliffe, Baron Percy of Alnwick and Baron Poynings extinct. His daughter [his future wife] Elizabeth [aged 3] was his sole heiress.
Around 1672 Charles Seymour 6th Duke of Somerset [aged 9] educated at Harrow School.
On 29th April 1675 John Seymour 4th Duke of Somerset [aged 30] died. He was buried at Salisbury Cathedral [Map]. Marquess Hertford extinct. His first cousin once removed [his brother] Francis [aged 17] succeeded 5th Duke Somerset, 5th Earl Hertford, 5th Baron Beauchamp of Hatch Beauchamp in Somerset.
Around 1677 Charles Seymour 6th Duke of Somerset [aged 14] educated at Trinity College, Cambridge University [Map].
On 20th April 1678 Francis Seymour 5th Duke of Somerset [aged 20] was killed. He was unmarried and childless. He was shot dead by Genoese Horatio Botti whose wife Seymour was said to have insulted at Lerici. His brother Charles [aged 15] succeeded 6th Duke Somerset, 6th Earl Hertford, 6th Baron Beauchamp of Hatch Beauchamp in Somerset, 4th Baron Seymour of Trowbridge.
William of Worcester's Chronicle of England
William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

She being the sole heiress of Josceline Percy 11th Earl of Northumberland she brought an enormous fortune to the marriage. She the daughter of Josceline Percy 11th Earl of Northumberland and [his future mother-in-law] Elizabeth Wriothesley Countess Northumberland [aged 33]. He the son of Henry Cavendish 2nd Duke Newcastle upon Tyne [aged 48] and Frances Pierrepont Duchess Newcastle upon Tyne [aged 48].
On 15th November 1681 Thomas "Tom of Ten Thousand" Thynne [aged 33] and [his future wife] Elizabeth Percy Duchess Somerset [aged 14] were married. She the daughter of Josceline Percy 11th Earl of Northumberland and [his future mother-in-law] Elizabeth Wriothesley Countess Northumberland [aged 35].
On 30th May 1682 Charles Seymour 6th Duke of Somerset [aged 19] and Elizabeth Percy Duchess Somerset [aged 15] were married. His first marriage, her third having been widowed twice by the age of seventeen. She by marriage Duchess Somerset. Being the sole heiress of her father Josceline Percy 11th Earl of Northumberland she brought considerable wealth to the marriage. She the daughter of Josceline Percy 11th Earl of Northumberland and Elizabeth Wriothesley Countess Northumberland [aged 36]. They were fifth cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.
Before 22nd March 1683 [his son] Charles Seymour was born to Charles Seymour 6th Duke of Somerset [aged 20] and [his wife] Elizabeth Percy Duchess Somerset [aged 16]. He died aged less than one years old.
Before 26th August 1683 [his son] Charles Seymour died.
In 1684 Charles Seymour 6th Duke of Somerset [aged 21] was appointed 488th Knight of the Garter by King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland [aged 53].
On 11th November 1684 [his son] Algernon Seymour 7th Duke of Somerset was born to Charles Seymour 6th Duke of Somerset [aged 22] and [his wife] Elizabeth Percy Duchess Somerset [aged 17]. He married 5th July 1715 his third cousin once removed Frances Thynne Duchess Somerset and had issue.
In 1685 [his daughter] Elizabeth Seymour Countess Thomond was born to Charles Seymour 6th Duke of Somerset [aged 22] and [his wife] Elizabeth Percy Duchess Somerset [aged 17]. She married 1707 her half fifth cousin Henry O'Brien 8th Earl Thomond, son of Henry Horatio O'Brien and Henrietta Somerset Countess Suffolk.

In 1691 [his mother] Eizabeth Alington 2nd Baroness Seymour Trowbridge [aged 55] died.
After March 1691 John Closterman [aged 31] completed a number of unfinished works of John Riley [deceased] bringing him to the attention of Charles Seymour 6th Duke of Somerset [aged 28] who then commissioned him to complete a number of paintings.
In 1693 [his daughter] Catherine Seymour was born to Charles Seymour 6th Duke of Somerset [aged 30] and [his wife] Elizabeth Percy Duchess Somerset [aged 25]. She married before 19th August 1710 her half fifth cousin William Wyndham 3rd Baronet, son of Edward Wyndham 2nd Baronet and Katherine Leveson-Gower Lady Wyndham, and had issue.
On 3rd June 1696 [his son] Percy Seymour was born to Charles Seymour 6th Duke of Somerset [aged 33] and [his wife] Elizabeth Percy Duchess Somerset [aged 29].
Chronicle of Abbot Ralph of Coggeshall

She was sister to the Earl of Suffolk, and left a great estate, her jointure to descend to the Duke of Somerset [aged 42].

She married 1750 her second cousin Heneage Finch 3rd Earl Aylesford, son of Heneage Finch 2nd Earl Aylesford and Mary Fisher Countess Aylesford, and had issue.
In 1731 William Fitzroy 3rd Duke Cleveland 2nd Duke Southampton [aged 32] and [his sister-in-law] Henrietta Finch Duchess of Cleveland Duchess Southampton [aged 29] were married. She by marriage Duchess Cleveland, Duchess Southampton.
