The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 21st September 1585 [her father] Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu (age 22) and Elizabeth Jeffrey (age 17) were married at Weekley, Northamptonshire.

On 24th February 1612 [her father] Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu (age 49) and [her mother] Frances Cotton (age 34) were married at Weekley, Northamptonshire.

Around 1614 Frances Montagu Countess Rutland was born to Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu (age 51) and Frances Cotton (age 36) at Boughton House.

In May 1620 [her mother] Frances Cotton (age 42) died.

After 23rd April 1623. Monument to George Manners (deceased) and [her future mother-in-law] Grace Pierrepont (age 48) at All Saint's Church, Bakewell, Derbyshire [Map]. Stuart Kneeling monument representing them and their nine children, four boys (one died an infant) on the left, five girls on the right.

The armorials include: Manners Augmented Arms Manners Augmented with a Crescent difference.

Their son [her future husband] John 8th Earl Rutland (age 18) was married to Frances Montagu Countess Rutland (age 9).

Their daughter [her future sister-in-law] Dorothy Manners (age 13) married Thomas Lake (age 28).

Their daughter [her future sister-in-law] Frances (age 23) was married to Nicholas Saundeson 2nd Viscount Castleton.

Their daughter [her future sister-in-law] Eleanor (age 23) was married to Lewis Watson 1st Baron Rockingham (age 35).

The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." On 29th May 1638 [her son] John Manners 1st Duke Rutland was born to [her husband] John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland (age 33) and Frances Montagu Countess Rutland (age 24) at Boughton, Northamptonshire.

On 29th March 1641 George Manners 7th Earl of Rutland (age 61) died. His second cousin [her husband] John (age 36) succeeded 8th Earl of Rutland. On 15th June 1644 [her father] Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu (age 81) died at the Savoy Hospital. His son [her brother] Edward (age 27) succeeded 2nd Baron Montagu of Boughton in Northamptonshire.

Before 1648 [her son-in-law] John Cecil 4th Earl Exeter (age 19) and [her daughter] Frances Manners Countess Exeter (age 17) were married. She by marriage Countess Exeter. She the daughter of [her husband] John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland (age 43) and Frances Montagu Countess Rutland (age 33). He the son of David Cecil 3rd Earl Exeter and Elizabeth Egerton Countess Exeter. They were half sixth cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

Around 1654 [her daughter] Elizabeth Manners Countess Anglesey was born to [her husband] John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland (age 49) and Frances Montagu Countess Rutland (age 40).

In or before 1655 [her son-in-law] Patrick Chaworth 3rd Viscount Chaworth (age 19) and [her daughter] Grace Manners Viscountess Chaworth were married. She by marriage Viscountess Chaworth in County Armagh. She the daughter of [her husband] John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland (age 50) and Frances Montagu Countess Rutland (age 40). They were third cousins.

In 1655 [her daughter] Anne Manners was born to [her husband] John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland (age 50) and Frances Montagu Countess Rutland (age 41).

Around 1656 [her daughter] Dorothy Manners Countess Shaftesbury was born to [her husband] John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland (age 51) and Frances Montagu Countess Rutland (age 42).

In 1660 [her daughter] Frances Manners Countess Exeter (age 29) died.

In 1661 [her son-in-law] James Cecil 3rd Earl Salisbury (age 13) and [her daughter] Margaret Manners Countess of Salisbury were married. She the daughter of [her husband] John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland (age 56) and Frances Montagu Countess Rutland (age 47). They were fifth cousin once removed.

On 17th September 1669 [her son-in-law] James Annesley 2nd Earl Anglesey (age 24) and [her daughter] Elizabeth Manners Countess Anglesey (age 15) were married. She the daughter of [her husband] John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland (age 65) and Frances Montagu Countess Rutland (age 55). He the son of Arthur Annesley 1st Earl Annesley (age 55) and Elizabeth Altham Countess Anglesey (age 49).

On 19th May 1671 Frances Montagu Countess Rutland (age 57) died at Bottesford, Leicestershire.

On 29th September 1679 [her former husband] John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland (age 75) died at Nether Haddon, Derbyshire [Map]. He was buried at St Mary the Virgin Church, Bottesford, Leicestershire [Map]. His son [her son] John (age 41) succeeded 9th Earl of Rutland. [her daughter-in-law] Catherine Noel Duchess Rutland (age 22) by marriage Countess of Rutland.
