The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

Before 1540 [his father] Henry Willoughby (age 22) and [his mother] Anne Grey (age 19) were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Thomas Grey 2nd Marquess Dorset and [his grandmother] Margaret Wotton Marchioness Dorset.

In 1546 Francis Willoughby was born to Henry Willoughby (age 29) and Anne Grey (age 26).

On 17th August 1548 [his mother] Anne Grey (age 28) died.

Kett's Rebellion

On 27th August 1549 the rebels were defeated by an army led by John Dudley 1st Duke Northumberland (age 45). [his father] Henry Willoughby (age 32) was killed at Mousehold Heath, Norwich [Map].

Around 1560 Francis Willoughby (age 14) educated at Jesus College, Cambridge University.

In 1563 Francis Willoughby (age 17) and Elizabeth Lyttelton (age 15) were married. They were half fifth cousin once removed.

In 1566 [his daughter] Bridget Willoughby was born to Francis Willoughby (age 20) and [his wife] Elizabeth Lyttelton (age 18).

On 21st October 1566 [his daughter] Margaret Willoughby was born to Francis Willoughby (age 20) and [his wife] Elizabeth Lyttelton (age 18) at Wollaton, Nottinghamshire.

In 1572 [his daughter] Frances Willoughby was born to Francis Willoughby (age 26) and [his wife] Elizabeth Lyttelton (age 24).

In 1574 [his daughter] Dorothy Willoughby was born to Francis Willoughby (age 28) and [his wife] Elizabeth Lyttelton (age 26).

In 1575 Francis Willoughby (age 29) was knighted.

In 1576 [his daughter] Abigail Willoughby was born to Francis Willoughby (age 30) and [his wife] Elizabeth Lyttelton (age 28).

On 15th February 1587 [his son-in-law] Robert Spencer 1st Baron Spencer (age 17) and [his daughter] Margaret Willoughby (age 20) were married.

In 1594 [his wife] Elizabeth Lyttelton (age 46) died.

In August 1595 Francis Willoughby (age 49) and Dorothy Tamworth were married.

In 1596 Francis Willoughby (age 50) died.
