Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

He the son of [his grandfather] Hugh Percy 1st Duke Northumberland [aged 63] and [his grandmother] Elizabeth Seymour Duchess Northumberland.

On 20th April 1785 Hugh Percy 3rd Duke Northumberland was born to Hugh Percy 2nd Duke Northumberland [aged 42] and Frances Julia Burrell Duchess Northumberland [aged 32].

On 6th June 1786 [his grandfather] Hugh Percy 1st Duke Northumberland [aged 70] died. His son [his father] Hugh [aged 43] succeeded 2nd Duke Northumberland, 2nd Baron Lovain, 5th Baronet Smithson of Stanwick in Yorkshire. [his mother] Frances Julia Burrell Duchess Northumberland [aged 33] by marriage Duchess Northumberland.

On 19th May 1810 [his brother-in-law] James Murray 1st Baron Glenlyon [aged 27] and [his sister] Emily Frances Percy Baroness Goldolphin Helston [aged 22] were married at St Martin in the Fields Church [Map]. She the daughter of [his father] Hugh Percy 2nd Duke Northumberland [aged 67] and [his mother] Frances Julia Burrell Duchess Northumberland [aged 57]. He the son of John Murray 4th Duke Atholl [aged 54].

On 29th April 1817 Hugh Percy 3rd Duke Northumberland [aged 32] and Charlotte Herbert Duchess Northumberland [aged 29] were married at Northumberland aka Suffolk House Strand. She the daughter of Edward Clive 1st Earl Powis [aged 63] and Henrietta Antonia Herbert 3rd Countess Powis [aged 58]. He the son of Hugh Percy 2nd Duke Northumberland [aged 74] and Frances Julia Burrell Duchess Northumberland [aged 64].

On 10th July 1817 [his father] Hugh Percy 2nd Duke Northumberland [aged 74] died. His son Hugh [aged 32] succeeded 3rd Duke Northumberland, 3rd Baron Lovain, 4th Baron Percy, 6th Baronet Smithson of Stanwick in Yorkshire. [his wife] Charlotte Herbert Duchess Northumberland [aged 29] by marriage Duchess Northumberland.

On 9th February 1818 [his brother-in-law] Edward Herbert 2nd Earl Powis [aged 32] and Lucy Graham Countess Powis [aged 24] were married. She the daughter of James Graham 3rd Duke Montrose [aged 62] and Caroline Maria Montagu Duchess Montrose. He the son of [his father-in-law] Edward Clive 1st Earl Powis [aged 63] and [his mother-in-law] Henrietta Antonia Herbert 3rd Countess Powis [aged 59].

In 1819 Hugh Percy 3rd Duke Northumberland [aged 33] was appointed 652nd Knight of the Garter by King George IV of Great Britain and Ireland [aged 56] during the Regency.

On 28th April 1820 [his mother] Frances Julia Burrell Duchess Northumberland [aged 67] died at Syon House [Map]. She was buried in the Northumberland Vault, Crypt, Westminster Abbey.

His son [his brother-in-law] Edward [aged 54] succeeded 2nd Earl Powis. Lucy Graham Countess Powis [aged 45] by marriage Countess Powis.

On 25th August 1842 [his brother] Algernon Percy 4th Duke Northumberland [aged 49] and [his sister-in-law] Eleanor Grosvenor Duchess Northumberland [aged 21] were married at St George's Church, Hanover Square. The difference in their ages was 27 years. She the daughter of Richard Grosvenor 2nd Marquess Westminster [aged 47] and Elizabeth Mary Leveson-Gower Marchioness Westminster [aged 45]. He the son of [his father] Hugh Percy 2nd Duke Northumberland and [his mother] Frances Julia Burrell Duchess Northumberland. They were half fifth cousin once removed.

On 11th February 1847 Hugh Percy 3rd Duke Northumberland [aged 61] died without issue at Alnwick, Northumberland [Map].
